Fuck deadlifts

Yes, IST was right. Deadlift is a meme exercise which trains lots of muscles but no one perfect. The risk vs reward ratio is terrible.

Before one week it happened again. Sudden sharp pain in my lower back followed by tightness and stiffness while pulling and I dropped immediately on my knees.
In my lifting history I injured myself 3 times and all time just because of deadlifts.

There is no perfect form. Everybody teaches it different and even if there is a perfect form, this will not apply to you.
Body ratios are different for everybody.
Someone with short legs and normal torso will have a more upright position while someone with long legs and short torso will have a very high hips position and his torso will be nearly parallel to the ground.

After I injured myself I had various thoughts like why I did this shit? What gave this exercise to me? If I would just train like all others in the gym dumbbells for chest and shoulder, machines for back and split squats etc which doesn’t compress your spine for legs, I would look so much better and could train all the time without injury break.
Powershitting is a meme and cope for people who have issues in their life.
I know no powershitter who has no back problems.

Should lifting not make us stronger and support our daily life’s instead of making us weaker by destroying our spines and joints?

Are trap bar deadlifts safer than normal deadlifts or should I completely avoid this exercise?

It just makes no fricking sense to deadlift when you don’t compete.
If your goal is just hypertrophy it really really doesn’t make sense.
A intelligent routine of horizontal and vertical pulls will give you without a doubt more back gains than one million deadlifts.
Even squats and bench press are trash for hypertrophy.

If your goal is strength, it is a different story.
But still than someone who doesn’t deadlift will be stronger than someone who lifts 500 lbs but can’t move well because of lower back and hip problems.

I wish I never would getting radicalized by the big 3 cultists and just train like all others.
I would be healthy, look good and jaut live my life.

They are. Bench press has just a limited range of motion and is bad for the shoulders. With dumbbells you have more range of motion and thanks to the neutral grip it’s healthier for your shoulders.

There are better exercises like front or split squats which hit the quads more.

After I switched from barbell to dumbbell bench press and kicked out squats and deadlifts, my muscles explode like never before.

Been working out for couple years now, have no problem any compound lift except deadlifts. Ive only gotten injured with deadlifts. People will respond to your post and others with "don't ego lift" they won't define what they mean and if your doing deadlifts for hypotrophy your really wasting your time.

  6. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

So wait, you got injured because you didn't lift properly and went to heavy and you're blaming it on the exercise? I can understand about difference in forms and set up, but it sounds like you went to heavy or just didn't lift safely. Sounds like a (you) problem

      Anonymous

I lift properly. My technique was one point.
Bracing, neutral spine, leg and hip drive. Everything perfect.
The whole movement itself is just to dangerous for people who jut want to be fit and look good.
No exercise is irreplaceable. And exercises with such bad reward risk ratio should be avoided.
If your goal is jut hypertrophy this exercise is even bad because it wastes too much energy for nothing.
And as soon as you hit weight above 500 lbs you can’t guarantee to lift perfect. With so much weight as little mistake which you can’t see with eyes is enough to snap the shit out of you.
For what? What does this exercise give you?

Bros there is a life outside of the gym.
No one of us will be able to deadlift the next 20 years. Sooner or later oner after another will snap his shit and stop lifting or stop lifting without a reason.
Just lift weights, do safe exercises and stay fit for the next 20 years.

Longevity in this sport is important.
I learned this when I saw someone in his 30s who had a great body. Looked fricking good.
He said that he just lift with dumbbells due to longevity reasons. No barbell bench press because it will frick up your shoulders because of unnatural movement, no deadlifts for obvious reason and no squats because it compresses your spine.
He did dumbbell bench press which is healthier for shoulders and hits the chest better, dumbbell RDLs and dumbbell split squats.
He looked so good, was incredible fit and had a good life.
Then I looked to me. Fricked up back and hips due deadlifts and squats, shoulder issues likely because of bench press.
When I wake up morning my back is stiff while he wakes up fresh.
My PR in deadlift is maybe 650 but he is stronger than me. How? Because he could easily smash me on the ground while I need to be careful because of my back when I try the same.
He is fast, mobile and I am a stiff fricked up man despite being younger.
He lifted weights next to his career while I was obsessed with PRs in the big 3.

My world broke apart after I realized how stupid I am. I wish I would never start powerlifting.
And here is a uncomfortable fact:
There is no scientific proof that we can strengthen our discs. This means we are accelerating wear and tear with exercises like deadlifts…

Nordic curls, GHR and RDLs are way better than Std Deadlifts for hamstrings and have more carryover to running and jumping than deadlifting which actually makes you worse at both (they work complete opposite modalities) Only powershitters and certain sports get value from it. All that effort could have been better spent on other lifts.

Deadlifting is to learn a movement pattern, you don't DO the deadlift to build hamstrings, you build your hamstrings so you don't look like a chair bound gimp while trying to deadlift. You need excellent hamstrings if you want to pull it off. Everyone here whining about how hurt they get deadlifting is because theu go into it weak as a kitten then cry because they were too lazy to do it properly

new/fit/gay here, just recovered from a deadlift related injury.
I had a sharp pain in my lower back extending out to part of my glute.
it was pretty bad and doing simple tasks like leaning over a desk to write was painful.

needless to say, still hit the gym and did OHP dumbell presses while treating my lowers as paralyzed or resting. my lower back recovered in 2.5-3 weeks.
I just hit deads today and find it's appeal in completing a jacked back, glutes, calves and hamstring aesthetic.
your form is probably shit, slightly bend your knees, while gripping the barbell and stand/straighten your body out like a stretch.

I do PHUL and multiple personal trainers tell me I shouldn't do squats and deadlifts on the same day. So I just do core work and deadlifts on Wednesday.

The first one also had me do the hip tilt movement well over a dozen times per session just to make sure my form was 100%.

The main risk comes from poor form, apparently, so if you can get your form right the risk:reward improves.

  36. 2 years ago

I agree to an extent but from my experience have you got tight hamstrings?

My right hamstring is ultra tight, light cant touch my toes can only reach half way down my shin tight.

If I don't strech and do dead I will pull my lower back (on the lower right tight hamstrings side) but if I do a huge stretching routine for my hammy(s) before doing deads I can do them fairly safely

Just my thoughts, I still don't do them though as the risk is far too high for me.

Yeah I hate deadlifts, they used to be my favorite exercise, used to pull 5pl8 for reps, always good form. Then one day I decided not to chalk for a shitty commercial gym bar with zero grip beveling since all the other bars were taken. Halfway towards the lockout my left hand just loses grip, don’t use straps, I’m pulling with a partial grip on my left and full grip on my wrist but pull up all the way since I’m a quarter of the way into lockout, feel this large stabbing pain in my back but pass off it. The next day I wake up and I can’t even get off my bed without encrutiating pain, was bedridden for 6 months, had to quit my job, now I have permanent pain in my lower back.

You can have good form for 999/1000 times you deadlift but if you frick up just once it’s fricking over. At least bench and squat there are safeties or it’s easier to bail, but deadlifts when you bail you always injure something - unless you don’t lift anything off the ground.

            Anonymous

Yeah it was poor form, my argument was that you can have good form for 99% of your deadlifts but if you frick up once during the lifting phase then you will injure yourself.

Also since I lost 50% of the grip and was almost to lockout, I ended up pulling with my lower back and legs instead of my upper back and legs, it was only a second if shitty form but that’s all it takes

Deadlifts is an ok exercise the problem is that people treat it as a main staple workout like bench or squat and it just isn't.

Most people just like it because they feel cool loading up the bar with alot of weight.
