le chronic back pain boogeyman is caused by bad form
if you're a tradie who actually goes to the gym this is a nonissue
in fact, you're also going to destroy your body if you lift with bad form at the gym too
so quit this moronic argument at once

Man, you know the average construction guy will not give up the double Honeybun/tall Monster energy drink with Marlboro Reds breakfast, the majority of those guys eat garbage.

oh, I know. a few of my coworkers would smoke a blunt for breakfast. and during lunch, you search for the nearest fast food spot you might enjoy if you're out on service calls, or you go to the same spot if you're on a jobsite for an extended period of time.

Concrete and landscaping 12 hour days was the best shape in my life. I'll work out for an hour or so every day now but it's not the same. Doesnt really build the same endurance. But every homosexual i ever worked for was like WHAT YOU DONT WANT TO WORK SATURDAY AND SUNDAY YOU MUST NOT LIKE MONEY YOU PUSSY

Isn't there a lot of harsh 'bantering' working in manual labour?

That is very much the perception here in the UK at least. Like if you work on a construction site it is expected that you be able to handle the extreme banter (i.e borderline bullying) otherwise you won't hack it. I'm a weedy, pale, specky virgin and expect I would be outed my first day on the job.

Obviously this is less of a concern for those who have gone self-employed and presumably do solo jobs like electricians and plumbers etc.

Yes, you need to be able to handle the banter

      >get chronic back pain and lung cancer at 50
      >making 50k a year for this

most construction workers make more than that and you can easily injure youreself working out. Lowest construction wage i got was $17 which is almost 80k a year if you only work 40 hours a week.

          how?
          17*8 = 136 per day
          136*5 = 680 per week
          680 * 52 = 35360 per year

I was mixing the other day and some bloke who knows my uncle got out of his tractor and came up to us, started poking fun and telling me to go quicker with the mixing and made fun of my haircut. I was a bit titled in the moment because I didn't give any back but in retrospect, the guy just looks like a moron. take it on the chin or you'll only get yourself wound up. blogpost over.

What i learned from a few months in construction is that you better laugh with the banter instead of crying about it and looking like a b***h. The experienced guys will make fun of you. I had to carry bricks for a mason and his son when I was a fresh 19 year old and he'd throw his trowel at me if I didn't listen or went too slow. My feet were fricked the first day and I could cry of the pain but I endured and years later I can work like a beast.

You also never pussy out. These lads were laying bricks on 10 meter tall supports with no handlebars to catch you if the wind got you by surprise. I always were shitting bricks everytime i had to climb up there, sure they're gonna comment on you being pale but they appreciate it that you're dealing with your fears, even if you're a bit slow. Unless there was danger, like a colleague requiring assistance to lift something heavy on a dangerous supports. Then you just need to put your mind on 0 and do it for your fellow work man.

I'll still remember this guy, bald 6 ft 6 giant with a braided viking beard. He'd terrify me but it you earned his respect it was a nice feeling. At the last day of work we went to his place and drink at his bar at home he constructed himself. This dude was cool.

Did construction for 3 months and you can definitely notice yourself getting stronger and developing muscular endurance but it's not an healthy work environment. There's a shit ton of dust everywhere from your work site to your clothes so you can really avoid coughing some nasty phlegm and that can't be good for you.
Not to mention the injury risk with awkward weights and hidden hazards.

Met a boomer that was fricking strong even though he looked like he could have a heart attack at any given moment.

Purely an American problem, but most of these jobs don't offer any insurance or benefits whatsoever so the extra dollar an hour you make compared to Walmart goes to health insurance or you get fricked at the hospital when you get injured

I got a manual labor job(nepotism) on a commercial site. It was fun until I had to dig trenches for 2in irrigation pipe and I kept smacking into rocks. Joints weren't happy about that. IDK might go back into it since I am dumb, but it has it's pros and cons like everything.
Will say I burned a stupid amount of calories on harder days.

manual labor is a gain goblin outside of forearms.
i used to carry crates of potatoes (around 20kg each, sometimes two at the time) all day long 6 and 1/2 days a week for an admittedly huge salary but i got skelly mode instead of making gains on my usual diet, gained fat if eating more. grip strenght and forearm size gained a lot but everything else tanked, you cant beat training in a gym.

On second thought it's possible i didnt realize they were coasting off gains from prison but that would be for literally months even several years. Maybe they secretly worked out in the middle of the night.

manual labor can keep you in shape, but it pays like shit most of the time, and is also the most replacable by technology.

it is a more practical approach to choose a career that maximizes long-term growth and comfort financially while working out on the side. that is practically 2 jobs, and more demanding, but much more stable in general.
