Grip Strength

Anyone else training with a pinch block, hub, rolling handle etc?

I just tested my first maxes on a tool, not this particular one. Have my first goals planned out. No idea how long it's going to take me to get to them.

Working towards 50lbs on the hub. Can hit 45 fairly consistent with my right, less often with my left. 47.2 is my best so far. Crazy what a grind so little additional weight can be.

Nice, m8. Have you tried hub lifting an actual 45 plate yet?
I recently got a hub but I haven't tried it at all yet.

not yet. all of my 45s are are cheap rubber coated chinese jobs. I'd love to find some old yorks.

I use a pinch block and it cleared up some pains/unbalances I had in my thumb joint/forearm. I used to do all sorts of wrist curls and rope rollers and all sorts to mitigae pain, but once I started properly programming pullups, rows and deadlifts I was hard-pressed to find better forearm engagement. Still keep on with the pinch block, though

Were you getting a pain on the underside of the forearm, kind of running right up it and sort of deep?

My bad i should have checked the catalogue first I'm training my grips in hopes of a grip competition at the end of the year, currently I do

    Tuesday
    60mm pinch block 5 x 10 seconds
Heavy farmers with fat gripz carry 5 x as long as possible
    Wrist curls 5x10
    Reverse wrist curls 5x10
    Hand grippers 5x10

    Thursday
    Same as Tuesday

    Saturday
    Hub lifts 5x10 seconds
80mm one handed pinch block 5x10 seconds
    Rolling thunder 5x10 seconds
    Wrist curls 5x10
    Reverse Wrist curls 5x10
    Hand gripper 5x10

Thoughts? Too much too little? I've been doing it 6 months and seem to have plateaued

Nice. What events will be in the competition?

Ever tried a grip dynamometer? I've heard of just regular athletes using these as a training tool.
Like, they'll use it before doing anything just to judge how well they have recovered. If they do shit at the dynamometer they just rest instead.
Could be useful to work out when you can go for it and when you should skip it or phone it in.

They don't announce until just before but going off previous years it's same sort of stuff I'm lifting now but at various sizes also. Plus half penny grip which I'm going to invest in next. I've also heard that, I will do that actually if my grip has recovered really push it hard because some days now my hands tell me before I even start training if it's going to be a bad session or not due to aching

You're probably more expert in grip than anyone else likely to show up here and give advice. Especially me.

I have heard climbers say even clenching their jaw helps with grip strength. Maybe you could get one of those homosexual jawsersize things and work up on tightening other areas so nothing "leaks" during a lift?

Maybe you just need more rest. Grip stuff seems to be pretty different re: rest. Longer rest breaks in sets. Longer rests between sessions.

Thanks anon, probably listening to my hands more and resting when needed will help. I will try it, I just love doing it so much I wish my hands could keep up, I would do it everyday if I could. Problem is because it's rather nice it's hard to find intermediate and advanced routines like normal lifting

Ever seen how arm-wrestlers train? I was watching jujumufu vids this week and it looks like they have a bunch of specialized tricks too.
I dunno about all of them, though. It looks like they actively court imbalances.

Do you do any extensor work? I feel like it helps with my recovery.

I do yes after every grip day infact I'm getting those exact bands soon

I've tried a few different devices, nothing worked nearly as well as going to the climbing gym.

Here's an idea. I dunno if this is a useful one. So a lot of these lifts are basically one-armed deadlifts, right?
Well what if you practiced one-armed deadlifts with straps and got them up as high as you can?
Admittedly the world record for hub lift is just under 45kg. So this really isn't a lot of weight in terms of a deadlift. It's the grip that is the bigger concern, not the deadlift ability.
But if you had a lot of hours doing really heavy one armed deadlifts... I feel like there would have to be helpful cross-over.

anyone here experienced with single finger training? I'm currently getting started(3 months in) on a propable half decade project of one finger chin up but i'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to such tendon/joint intensive training. I do bodyweight leans with a single finger on a loop at a time. Is normal(as in 4x10-15s sets thrice a week) suboptimal considering i'm on the tendon/joint strengthening phase? I do loads of warm ups with heated bottle crunches and grip board. The reason for this weird project is that i'm chronically i'll and can't handle anything more strenous but still want to improve in some regard, and i had a dream where some Nubian queen let me smash after doing said feat 3 months ago. I've done OAC allready in the past so strenght in that regard isn't a problem if/when i get better.

I will say this focusing on one type of grip is a one way ticket to injury. When I first started I focused only on pinch grip and I had constant pain in my knuckles. After training all types pin has gone and my pinch has vastly improved. You want

      Pinch
      Support
      Crush
      Extensors
      Wrist and forearms

To be more specific to your training I would imagine you want an open hand support training focus so fat gripz holds, towel hangs, rolling thunder etc and some crushing work like grippers and finger curls. But make sure to still train everything else to avoid injury

Thanks lad. Just went out to our national home depo equivalent and picked up enough pipes for 10 DIY rolling thunders(they didn't have shorter pieces of pipe lol) and will make some for myself and a few bros.

It's great at first but as weight gets heavier it struggles to rotate. Now I use one of these that rotates with a fat gripz on it.

Kettlebell. Pretty much makes your fingers strong as hell. Swings, deadlift, and arm wrestling.

I have a captains of crush set that I just mindlessly squeeze whenever I'm watching anime or whatever. Started only able to close the T, now I can close the 1.5 for reps

I've bought what's called a foundation brick in my country, 2$. It weighs 25kg and size is 38x24x12cm. I just grab it and lift from the floor.

Honest question, what's stops me from doing something like pic rel? It would work allright for grip strength no?

Nothing is stopping you, I diy most my grip stuff. Make a few of various sizes for both one hand and two hand, I've got a 40mm 60mm and 90mm. Also you can make a hub out of a hockey puck, rolling thunder out of two plastic pipes

Really nice design man! What's this weird bolt called?
Picrel my DIY stuff, a pair of 125kg dumbbells made of old brake discs; a similar forearm trainer made of a stretchfolie and a cord (you can put a barbell through it, mount it on a rack and load more weight this way). Last thing are the hammers, they aren't really DIY but I've shortened the handles and drew a 5cm scale on them. I use them for forearm training.

Not only does this work fine: DIY is the optimal way to get a block that is perfectly wide for your hand.
ie. You can get your digits and thumbs on it up to the first crease but only just.

I have a store bought one that is great but it's just so very slightly too wide for my left hand. My thumb can't get around it and lay flat.

I watched this earlier, the guys grip strength wasn't great for those lifts. I'm about same as him at 100kg bw and 6 months training. Would love to see a rock climber vs Brian Shaw who is actually a grip strength beast

yeah I was a bit underwhelmed by the big guy, supposedly he participated in some grip competition so I expected more.

Here's the Juji video that Magnus mentioned at some point

Me too his forearms and hands were huge, I guess looks can be deceiving. Maybe he doesn't actually train it too much and just entered because he can deadlift heavy without straps so thought he could do the rest of the lifts too. Thanks anon I'll check it out

imo one commenter nailed it by saying that it's impressive that the powerlifter brute-forced the test that far by sheer strength but without specific training, I think your theory is spot on

              Anonymous

Yea if he doesn't train it it's impressive, with training he could be really good. Hardly any money in it though so I suppose not many people are bothered about training it.
