give me one good reason i should do OHP if it doesn't hit the side or rear delts much and most lifters already have overdeveloped front delts from doing bench press

This is bait but you should be doing push press also. I do mine after a full set of ohp to get used to heavier weight. The reason it’s easier is because the first part of the OHP is the hardest. That’s also why you’ll have extra push presses in the tank after you’re fried on OHP.

What are some must remember things for OHP? I move my hands underneath the bar not unlike when starting, squeeze my glutes and push up as much as possible, anything else to keep in mind?

I can do 50kgs for 5 reps which is a pretty nice improvement, hoping to get above 1plaet this year.

Hold breath till peak position. The maneuver helps not to get an hernia. Also remember get your spine as straight as possible during the list, don't be silly. Snap city is very close when doing OHP.

Yeah, I'd say that at times I sorta lean back too much and put some strain on the lower spine because of it, I guess I'll be more conscious of it.

Squeeze the bar as hard as you can, train very high volume and frequency. Also, OHP strength drops quite fast when I lose weight, more so than any other lift unfortunately

I squeeze that motherfricker as hard as I can, as if I wanted to rip the bar in half.

Breathing into my stomach and bracing gave me a lot of progress, I recommend doing that if you aren't already.

            Anonymous

Yes, breathing is a good tip. Honestly a bit of leanback is fine in my opinion, because then you can drive your body forward under the bar when you hit the sticking point at forehead height

Strict OHP is one of the most useless meme lifts tbqh. I'm not sure I've ever actually seen an athlete in any sport do an OHP. I can pull up scores of images of top-level athletes (boxers, NFL players, NBA players) doing overhead landmine work. Furthermore, despite the alternate name "military press", I don't believe it gets used in any modern military context. Just take the landmine pill.

Mate, we used to do a lot of OHP in my rugby team when ostracized to the gym after losing a match due to lack of strength. Our coach was strict as frick and a real pain in the ass but he taught us good.

OK, but why don't professional athletes do it? I can find millions of examples of pro athletes lifting 2/3/4 on the bench/squat/DL (mostly hex bar) as part of their regular training yet I can't seem to find even one photo or video of a regular athlete (so not a powerlifter/bodybuilder/strongman who lives to do countless esoteric lifts) doing this movement for even 1pl8, much less 2pl8+ which you would think a big NFL player could easily do. Why?

Like quite a lot of compound lifts, putting up bigger numbers on OHP requires good technique. Fine if having a high OHP is your goal, but not so much if you're just trying to develop generalised strength and power for sports. Landmine press is probably more 'idiot-proof' in terms of progression, and also has more carry-over to athletic movements where you're typically trying to push something up in front of you, rather than directly overhead.

        Anonymous

The landmine press is better because due the lever it has more resistance at the bottom and less at the top. Being that we can handle more on the eccentric this causes more mechanical and can be loaded heavier.

I would say the average untrained ohp 1rm is around 30-40kg. Skinny guys I see will start with the bar for sets of 5, and the guys that bench 60-80kg for reps will ohp around 30-40kg for reps in my experience
