Take a dumbell too heavy to lift, and straing against it, you aren't doing any work and you won't get any muscle growth till you reduce the weight till you can actually lift it. Same goes for pulls ups, if you can't do 1 rep to start off then you can't really progress, you're just straining yourself against a weight you can't move.

said. I tried doing leg raises and tore my abdominal wall because straining against the weight of my own legs was too much for me to handle. Using machines, I can adjust the weights to match my strengt, not overexert myself and gradually progress.

These requirements are bullshit, but I think there should be a suggested level of bodyweight fitness before you join (planks, push-ups, running etc). Otherwise, you’re just spending money on something that can be done at home for free. Pull-ups make no sense as that requires a bar that you won’t easily get without a gym

Only open to about 1% of the general population, the gym has about 20 people paying a monthly fee and maybe 3-4 one-timers a week. None of them buy overpriced shakes or pay for personal trainers because they're experienced enough to know they don't need it. The owner goes broke in 2-3 months and the gym closes.
