Gymcels can't fight

how do you cope with the fact, that a random manlet that trains muay thai for a few months could easily beat you in a fight - regardless of how much you bench or how muscular you look?

This guy is 100% correct, no cap. When our rifles jammed (approx. 100% of CQC engagements), we used our famous Under Water Knife Fighting techniques instead, there's really no point wasting time drawing a sidearm. Few guys tried that and got knocked out; in the end, we just left pistols in the armory.

Your statement isn’t as wrong as some of the morons that replied would think. Depending on the distance, if you are already only feet apart you may be able to get to a person with a handgun before they can draw or within a range in which they can’t use it. It is obviously disadvantageous, but has happened multiple times, even on video. But striking against someone with a firearm is even less likely too involve you winning that fight. So you’re mostly moronic but there is still some truth to it.

That's because you're a dumbass bitter homosexual who got cut from the JV team as a senior. The kid from Oklahoma was a stud and it showed. A trained fighter attacked him completely unexpectedly and he held his own and protected himself surprisingly well for having no training, being shitfaced drunk, and again, being taken completely by suprise. He could have and would have easily beaten the shit out of the guy if they had fought on anything approaching equal terms. Beligerent MMA homosexuals btfo.

He won the fight to the extent possible, meaning he survived a complete suprise attack.

This "fight" was total bullshit and proves exactly the opposite of what you're trying to say. #1 that dude wasn't a linebacker he was a wide receiver, the smallest guy on the field. #2 even then he was able to take an unprotected sucker punch to the face and still didn't get knocked out. #3 in spite of his opponent being obviously trained in combat sports, having the element of complete suprise, he still was able to protect himself to the point he didn't get choked or knocked out. #4 he was completely wasted. In a fair fight (i.e. he knew he was in a fight before it started, and wasnt trashed) he would have beat the shit out of that guy. Because he's a superior athlete. Also, again that's the smallest fricking dude on the football field. Try that shit against a lineman, tight end, or linebacker and he'd have gotten wrecked like the weak overcompensating manlet he is.

Except he didn't get beat up. Other than that 1 unprotected unexpected unprovoked punch to the face that almost blinded him the supposedly badass fighter had nothing. Because he was physically inferior, which is probably why he is insecure and overcompensating by attacking his unsuspecting betters.

I've been in multiple fights. I've been punched in the face plenty of times. I've been in fights where I've been outnumbered and outgunned and being able to retreat without being beaten unconscious is a victory. I've also wrestled and sparred with trained fighters and what matters most is size, strength, and athleticism. Mma training does not negate these advantages in a fight, especially when the differences are large and fake videos like the one linked above purporting to show this to be false are bullshit upon any serious examination.

Being really big will enable you to take down opponents better trained than you who are much smaller than you, but there is a limit. BJJ and Muay Thai are pretty serious martial arts. If you spend a few years training, you will be able to take down opponents twice your size.

Here's a video of a highly skilled martial artist taking down a man twice his size.

The football player punched him in the face earlier, hence him touching his nose, and the football player's friend pushes his friend. Ok. I'll try to use small words. Facts surrounding Spencer Jones getting jumped in a bathroom proving fighters cam easily beat up D1 football players:

1.) The football players in question were a wide receiver and a place kick holder.
2.) These are the smallest weakest football players.
3.) Spencer Jones tells the belligerent trained mma fighter Brown to get the frick out of here, trying to avoid a fight, because.
a.) He's an honor roll student on a full ride athletic scholarship at a prestigious college with a lot to lose fighting worthless broke ass mma bums.
b.) Had no criminal record or history of violence.
c.) Has his hands down at his sides at the beginning of the "fight".

4.) Brown sucker punches him. Meaning he punched him as hard as he could without any warning before Spencer had a chance to defend himself.

5.) He immediately follows this up with a takedown and tries to pound and choke Spencer out.

6.) In spite of being blind in one eye, taking multiple unprotected punches to the face and being slammed on the ground Jones is able to regain a defensive position and protect himself from being choked or beaten unconscious.

7.) That he was able to do this was a testament to his strength, athleticism, stamina, and toughness.

8.) This video does not at all prove that mma fighters are superior to D1 football players at fighting.

9.) It shows a trained fighter, taking on the weakest type of D1 football player, cheating, and the fight still ending in a draw.

10.) People that get some kind of vicarious thrill watching this are seething bitter losers.

Why do you lie? It was his place kicker holder buddy, (who is literally on the field for the sole purpose of catching a 14 oz football and holding it in place with his index finger, not exactly Mr. Badass) pushes Brown.

Just try to think about this in the context of someone who you are not insanely jealous of. Imagine, I don't know, your friend or cousin or something.
                >goes to the bar with his buddies.
                >His friend is wasted and has some words with some belligerent mma dumbass who has already been in a fight that night.
                >friend goes to the bathroom
                >your cousin sees several dudes follow his friend into the bathroom
                >oh shit
                >goes into the bathroom after them
                >they're about to beat his friends ass and videotape it but hesitate because he's there now
                >cousin says "get the frick out of here" trying to get them to leave. Really really really doesn't want to fight in the bathroom of some shitty bar with some random dumb ass. Just doesn't want his friend to get killed.
                >your cousins friend sees bloody mma fighter #1 getting ready to clock your cousin so he tries to push him away
                >bloody mma fighter smashes his fist into your cousins face when he isn't expecting it at all and had his hands down.
                >immediately follows that up with a take down and ground and pound.
                >lands probably 5 punches before your cousin knows what's happening.
                >your cousin somehow manages to not get knocked out, choked out, and/or beaten/stomped to death in these circumstances.
                >in fact the only serious damage he has is from the first punch which was frankly a cheap shot.
                >Then everybody on the internet gloats about it for years about what a pussy your cousin is.

Try to separate your envy and bitterness from the situation and analyze it objectively.

See, you don't even know the basic fact that the guy who got pushed wasn't the guy who had the bloody nose. This would be obvious to anyone who spent 60 seconds watching the video. I have no idea what your obsession with this event (which you haven't even spent 60 seconds to research) is. It's so bizarre. Truly the most bizarre thing I've seen on IST for this half of the year.

the guy that punched Jones wipes his nose before he punches him. Brown claimed to have a bloody nose before the altercation and asserted that as evidence of his "self defense" when fundraising to pay his medical bills to repair his torn bicep (oh wait I thought he was totally unscathed). Seems like you're the one who doesn't know shit about this.

The whole point of this gay ass thread is that training and technique beat sheer strength.
If a black belt with perfect technique is too weak to through a damaging blow then he/she/xer is fricked in a fight.
Meanwhile someone who benches 3 plates can push the martial arts cel hard enough to bounce him off the pavement to concussionville.

any striking art with a belt system is useless in a fight context anyways. Karate and TKD have a couple techniques you could use in full contact but they have no idea how to use their hands and no one's throwing a wheel kick in self-defense. Either way the karategay could just do their gay little dance around a bodybuilder and it's not like the bodybuilder is gonna get to them unless they're in an enclosed space. No one wins.

I am 200 pounds and have been stuck in the half guard of a small female blue belt when I was a newish white belt. She wasn't going for submissions or anything, or at least she wasn't able to get them. I'm a blue belt now. One of my coaches now is a purple belt, maybe 170 lbs, and he can easily throw me around in butterfly guard. Another one of my coaches is a brown belt, maybe 155 lbs, and boy he is a slippery slippery worm. I have never been tapped by a white belt (as a blue belt), no matter their size or strength.

I think even a stronger 200 pound man can easily get BTFO by a female purple belt or above in BJJ. And definitely, easily, by lighter male purple belts and above. That's what I've seen in my time.

This simply isn't true. A few months of martial arts training is not enough to overcome a large reach, strength, and size advantage. More importantly, there is a wide distribution of natural athleticism and reaction times across people. Someone who has more reach, is stronger, and is a much more gifted athlete might be able to beat someone who puts lots of time into training martial arts.

I have trained various martial arts for years and I don't go around with the asinine assumption that I can beat anyone up, particularly because what I did for boxing isn't perfect preparation for dealing with unpredictable situations that might involve multiple people.

Second, endurance and speed/power are huge advantages in martial arts. You can definetly do a lot of prep and light sparring at a McDojo and still be out of shape and has in a real fight very quickly.

Also, size does matter. A lot. It's just that human beings generally don't vary that much in size. Valuev didn't become a world champion because of his amazing boxing skills. He had mediocre competition for his era and was a decent high end amateur/low level pro boxer skills wise who happened to be able to perform to that level while being seven feet tall and 335lbs. It was the huge weight, reach, and power advantages being an ogre gave him that let him win.

Obviously at a certain size a regular person could beat the shit out of Tyson because Tyson will be like a 5 year old to them. It's just that humans don't vary this much in size without major health problems. But a healthy 13 foot tall, 1,200 pound giant could just pick Tyson up and tear an arm off.

Realistically, no one gets big enough that most people will become like kids to them, so advantage is a trade-off between skill, endurance, chin, speed, etc.

I've had harder times with taller, bigger guys who are a few months in, but we're always good athletes in other sports than guys who had been training for years.

BTW, for a classic example that really is a perfect metaphor for Italy's entire experience in World War II, being totally shit at everything, there is this boxing match they set up.

Italy has a reigning champ, so for propaganda purposes they decided he would fight a captured black South African. The fight was supposed to show the superiority of the Italian race or whatever.

The South African dude had never fought and was forced to fight, but he did have a size advantage. This was supposed to help play up the superiority of the Italians, that their smaller guy could beat this untrained nobody I guess.

Well, the fight started how you'd think it would, with the pro boxer landing all the punches. Just like Italy with its huge manpower and equipment advantage began BTFOing Greece. And then just like Greece they shit the bed, with the South African landing a haymaker and knocking the Italian boxer unconscious. JUST.

Italy not even being able to win rigged fights is prime Italy in both World Wars lol.

Do I have the B reel for some event Italy tried to memory hole 81 year ago? No. It's mentioned in chapter 5, part III, of Inferno, which I'm still, by a well regardless scholar of the era.

Anyhow, the whole point is that it's unbelievable. But then again, so is an army with an absolutely overwhelming vehicle, tank, air craft, and manpower advantage getting BTFO by a country of just 7 million. That's why it's perfectly emblematic of Italy.

I don't think it's at all a common thing. And yeah, I boxed for about two years and then after I moved did kick boxing at an MMA focused gym. Then I switched to TKD as I got more concerned about injuries and having my noggin bounced around, and eventually embraced my inner nerd and did fencing for a bit (fun sport but kids and older guys with pony tails are your only competition).

You should bear in mind that "pro" sports were a lot less professional 80 years ago as well. Today, genetic outliers become pros because a huge swath of the population can at least try sports. Depression era southern Europe, kids were working much more often and didn't have anything like the resources people do today.

If you want something else you won't believe, and amateur US hockey team (so guys not even in the minors) played the USSR team in the 1980 Olympics. The Soviet team was full time pros and had just rolled the NHL All Star team five wins to one. The USA won and got to play for (and win) the gold.

Heh I know about that event for sure. That's a great point about sports, and perhaps boxing, too. I'm not much of a history buff so I don't know about the history of boxing, but I could believe that it wasn't quite professional 80 years ago. I still am not convinced that that event happened, but of course it's just one of those things where there's no evidence except hearsay (reputable hearsay or not) and you could go either way with it.

Well yeah, a large in-shape soldier can knock any guy out with a good hit. If someone doesn't approach a fight seriously and leaves themself open to a lucky shit, then those 1:1000 things can certainly happen.

This has happened with professional soldiers during the era of melee combat as well. Rome lost an entire we'll drilled, experienced legion to a bunch of israelites with rocks and sticks because they were whipped up into a religious fervor, while the Romans didn't take the battle seriously. 20,000 diseased and starving Crusaders who had eaten many of their horses routed a Seljuk host twice their size after they got whipped up by having found the Spear of Destiny. Or there is pic related (lol). Alexander's successors really let things go to shit. Also two Phantoms without full arms taking off as a bunch of MiG-21s bomb the runway, resulting in a 28 vs 2 where 8 MiGs get shot down.

"The Italians?," says Hitler, "well send one division, that should be enough to deal with them."

"No mien Further, it is much worse, they have entered on our side."

pretty much yeah. countless people train "mma" for years and are barely any better than when they started. shit instructor, no application/inconsistent attendance, they hardly spar, unproductive sparring etc. all factor into it.

unless you regularly spar and spar hard none of this shit is going to help you, and definitely not enough to overcome someone bigger and stronger

that's such a broad statement, it's up to you and your sparring partner to make sparring productive not the gym. I could choose to just brawl out all my rounds instead of trying to strike and it's going to ruin them for me and my partner. Light and hard sparring both have a place but if you aren't sparring with a purpose and are just there to give and take strikes obviously it's not very productive.

Yes and no. Your coaches should be deciding what kind of sparring sessions you're having. That's the point of them being coaches. I agree 100% with the last part of your post.

depends on the gym I guess I'm from a gym with UFC guys but on sparring days we've got like 30 people on the mats and one coach that walks around telling us to stop hitting each other so hard. People in camp get the more focused and guided sparring that you're describing.

                Anonymous

That sounds like a pretty cool gym. Do you mean that's how it is just for open mats/sparring sessions or even at the end of classes, too?

                Anonymous

There's a grappling room with a huge mat for jiu jitsu and wrestling and a smaller room for striking and mma sparring. All striking classes (beginner, advanced, sparring) and mma sparring are hosted in the striking room and the grappling mats are for bjj and wrestling classes and open mats.

Some places are more fitness oriented, although not generally MMA places. Seen it more with kick boxing.

But there are places where you can avoid any hard sparring. While light sparring is certainly useful, its not going to give you the timing for people actually trying to hit you hard. Although, in my experience there are always competitive guys who turn light sparring into hard sparring, but even they probably take it easy on the slob who isn't training seriously.

    1. I'm bigger and weigh more. Combat sports have weight classes for a reason

    2. Fighting skill has next to 0 utility in daily life. I've needed it twice in the 30 years I've been alive. Both times over a decade ago. It's a hobby, just like lifting. It's rarely used and most fights end in under a few minutes.

      Anonymous

Martial arts make you pretty flexible and give you great mobility in general. Not to mention cardio. Not sure what your daily life looks like but I find all that pretty utile. It for sure is a hobby, though. Not sure what else you would think it is, frankly.

  26. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

How much do you think being strong matter versus being big for fighting? Obviously reach matters and height, but also just weighing more gives you an advantage in some cases.

Because I've seen some freakishly strong guys that are not very big. A guy at my gym regularly dips 225 (5pl8) and probably weighs like 170. Not even a manlet either, he isn't that big. And I've seen him pull over 5pl8, and do one armed pull ups, which I know isn't much but IST standards, but I've seen very few people pull that much at all, and most are bloat lords.

With power lifters, you have guys who are 155 benching 450lbs. But how much does that really transfer into striking force? I would assume it is more important for grappling, because a guy who can lunge 350 can get one leg under them and get themself up with someone on top of them provided they have enough balance and aren't at too much of a disadvantage.

      Anonymous

being freakishly strong for a certain weight class has it's advantages and disadvantages. If you look at a small muscular hobbit man like Michael Chandler he is very explosive and can easily KO people and pick them up and slam them, however he doesn't have very good cardio and fades in the later rounds due to his muscle mass. If he lands clean it's generally lights out or at least a knockdown though.

No charges filed?? How could that be if the guy got sucker punched out of NOWHERE and mercilessly beaten (although the fight ended in a draw).

    >District attorney Greg Mashburn has decided not to pursue criminal charges, determining the altercation was “a mutual combat situation.”
    >“My office has decided that no criminal charges are appropriate as this appears to be a mutual combat situation in which both parties voluntarily engaged in a fist fight.”
A mutual combat situation?? Voluntary engagement?? How is that possible if it was a RANDOM sucker punch??
    >The video shows Brown and Jones exchange words while a man behind Jones, presumably a friend or associate, steps forward and shoves Brown.
What?? Someone shoved somebody? I thought the punch came out of nowhere!
    >Wiping blood from his nose, Brown gives a quick glance to a man standing next to him, later identified as his brother, Braden Brown. He then winds up and punches Jones in the face.
A bloody nose?? How could that have happened? I thought there was 0 violence before this guy totally RANDOMLY SUCKER PUNCHED the football player!

WHOA it's like when I take 5 seconds to read an article about something that happened I learn a ton more than if I just shitpost on IST for 8 hours ignoring all the facts carefully and tediously laid out to me by anons over and over again.

Woah. I take back everything I ever said because of what a judge said. The criminal justice system is such a paragon of virtue and fairness and righteousness everything they do and say is basically the word of God. Jeez I feel moronic. A judge. Wow. I can't even. I mean if a judge says it was mutual you can't argue with that. The justice system never fails. It's just nothing but honesty and fairness 100% of the time.

a district attorney isn't a judge. It never went to court, the district attorney decides if there is even grounds to file charges. If you can't even get past that step there is absolutely no grounds for a case. These are things you should know as an adult.

Oh man a DA. DAs are such wonderful people. Always do what's right. Never take the easy way out. They're even more virtuous than judges. If a DA says it was mutual you can be sure it was mutual. The video must have been doctored or something because it was basically a refereed boxing match in real life. The DA says so man.

Why learn to fight when you can master the blade?

      Anonymous

Because using a knife to defend yourself is a legal 'grey zone.' Unless you have clear footage of someone on top of you trying to kill you and you stab them in the chest a few times, you'll pretty be seen as some crazed attacker who was wielding a weapon for no reason besides to get into trouble. Just like how many gun carries on this board appear. However, a gun takes more "training" and "practice" and it's protected by the 2nd Ad. here in the states so it's not as frowned upon.

      Anonymous

What morons. I would've just pulled my gun out and tried to get away. That guy was so shocked after getting stabbed in the neck. People typically bleed out in just a couple minutes after getting major arteries destroyed.

I'd brandish my firearm to show I mean business, but I wouldn't shoot them, because there's still a chance I'd get charged with murder if I played some role in escalating the situation and challenging him to a fight, which is something it looks like those dudes were all guilty of.

            Anonymous

So you would brandish a firearm which is a prosecutable under penal code 417 or just as simple Menacing. You're life was clearly not in imminent danger if you could simply draw that weapon but simply brandish it. You should not own a firearm, you do not know how to use it you're gonna go off of laws.

WTF are you talking about? It depends which state you live in. He took out his knife, so I would've taken out my pistol in response. This would be justified in nearly every red state.

Nope, you in your own words are just brandishing a weapon to 'mean business' which is not allowed. Big no-no, sorry buddy no state allows Menacing.

Ever heard of the 21 foot rule? If some moron pulls out there knife, especially when they're making motions like that, I very well can unholster my pistol. In my state of Tennessee, I would likely get away if I shot him to death.

                Anonymous

No, you did not make any clear incentive for them to cease or for them follow your orders to cease. All you did was irresponsibly brandish a weapon and showcase it as just that, a weapon to 'mean business.' Mr. Anon, if you believed their was an imminent threat to your life why didn't you open fire? You're state allows you to. You hesitated which clearly shows your inability to protect yourself with a weapon.

                Anonymous

Not him, but you don't know what you are talking about. Many states in the US consider showing a weapon as a threat to be legally indistinct from attacking somebody with a weapon. Just by showing you have a weapon to another in a disagreement justifies self defense.

                Anonymous

It's not self defense to brandish a firearm and not utilize correctly.

lmao wtf are you even talking about. if you show your firearm and the other person surrenders immediately, you don't get in trouble for NOT shooting them. where did you study law LOL

                Anonymous

You still brandish a firearm regardless of what you think you're doing. If they cease and surrender that is what happens but you still committed menacing, if they don't cease and they still come towards you and you still showcase a firearm you still committed menacing. Why are you showing off a gun that you are not going to use? That doesn't make any sense in the judiciary system. Makes common sense, but not judicial sense. You have to use a commanding voice to give clear orders for them to stop and to drop their weapon while aiming your firearm directly at them at all times, or you shoot them because the reason you brought out your gun was because you believed your life was in imminent threat.

                >Mr. Anon, if you believed their was an imminent threat to your life why didn't you open fire?
This doesn't always happen with brandishing a weapon. In most red states, it's even legal to brandish a weapon if the other party is unarmed but acting erratically, but shooting an unarmed person might not always be considered a case of stand your ground. You're thinking that brandishing a weapon is the same as firing warning shots. All you're doing is showing the other guy that you have a pistol and that they should stay back. It's really not that big of a deal of the other party is being antagonizing.

Just so you know, the person you're arguing with is completely moronic and you are absolutely correct in saying that you would not be penalized under the law for pulling out a firearm in response to someone threatening you with a knife (as long as you didn't start the altercation or chase this person down after they stopped threatening you).

Usually, if you get into a verbal disagreement and try to verbally 'backdown' a man will try to keep the flame going. It's a natural sign of vulnerability that you have shown to your foe, something that they will utilize against you. Either through bribery or total public mockery which turns into a later assault from out-of-nowhere. Believe me, the best thing to do is not engage in it. If someone comes up to you and tries to say anything you just ask "Why are you talking to me?" "Stop talking to me, now." You have now clearly made the incentive that you wanted to be left alone. Tucking tail and praying isn't going to save you.

find a reputable mma gym with high level professional fighters (ufc, bellator, pfl) in your area and join and start taking classes. If you're serious about it get private lessons with the coaches there and get mats and a bag for home training. If you want to compete in mma you must also be serious about your fitness because it is a very strenuous sport and even if you aren't going to be a big muscle man you need to be at least fairly strong and lean.

Why people think that you can't do both at the same time ? I lift 6 times a week and go to a kickboxing gym 4 times a week, plus sparring with some friends on the weekend just because I'm bored. It's not that hard, lift one body part a day, eat 140 grams of protein and take collagen and voila you're good to go.
