Hands hurt if I don't eat LOADS of hearty foods

Gonna book an appointment with a registered dietician come Monday but wanted IST's opinion on this. I have very specific dietary needs. Take a look at pic rel. If I don't eat enough my right hand and specifically my ulnar nerve starts to really hurt. Even as I type this I am experiencing pain in the cubital tunnel region, and with every sway of my arm when I walk I can feel that ulnar nerve get irritated and static-y and tingly down the underside of my arm and up the side of my hide into my pinky and ring finger. Yes, I had a cubital (and carpal) tunnel release done and that has only helped somewhat. Yes, I'm seeing my orthopedic surgeon again to discuss a revision surgery.

I had McDonald's for lunch yesterday which kept my pain at bay but then I had 2 "Healthy Choice MAX Tex Mex Chicken" frozen protein bowls with a side of brown rice for extra complex carb action and a whole avocado mixed in for both meals for the micronutrition for break and lunch at work and lo and behold I am experiencing pain this morning. If I had had 2 (expensive) double meat subway subs then I wouldn't be in this situation but I was feeling cheap(er, since frozen meals are expensive as well).

I can literally eat a large pizza and make my ulnar nerve pain go away for a few hours. I have literally, and I do mean LITERALLY eaten whole pizzas to beat down my pain so I can game longer. Something BIG like a pizza gets my veins popping out and my muscles swollen up and something about that relieves my pain. Chicken, rice, broccoli and avocado just aren't enough to sustain a white ethiopian like me. Food like that leaves me feeling cold and my hand starts to get all creaky and hurt. Eating like a fitness influencer also makes me feel faint and light-headed. I need BIG foods to function.

What kind of disorder is this? I can't eat traditionally healthy or get down to a low bf% because it makes my hand hurt (I'm 5'8'' 140lbs btw) but I don't want to be shelling out $30 on food a day either.

I think this is all in your head (mostly) like the anon above said. There are some things at play here tough

I am betting that your pain is coming from you overusing your arm at the computer, long gaming sessions, sitting at the pc at work at home causes this. This is a overuse thing and the solution is simply doing it less, work out, lift, move. Do you lift? Lifting helps IMMENSELY in strengthening your arm structure and making it able to handle long gaming sessions without getting over-use injury, perhaps even eliminating it totally. But this is a long term solution because it takes a while for the strength and muscle to build up. You would also have to reduce total amount of time spent gaming to let it recuperate and start lifting and then slowly over time get back to previous levels of gaming/pc use after the training adaptations had set in.

I think the reason that food is making the pain go away is simply because eating food is pleasurable (especially if its good food) and that releases feel good chemicals like endorphins which has a pain reducing effect. So you are kind of self medicating your gaming induced overuse injuries with food.

      >double meat subway subs then I wouldn't be in this
Yeah the feel good effects of food would numb you. There are also two different things at play here
      >I can literally eat a large pizza and make my ulnar nerve pain go away for a few hours^
      > Something BIG like a pizza gets my veins popping out and my muscles swollen up and something about that relieves my pain
A big meal has lots of calories, the other meals you mention here are lower calorie meals and especially brown rice has less carbs per 100g and when you eat those meals you are eating less total calories, and you are eating less carbohydrates. Your body uses carbs to heat it self up so that explains the coldness you are feeling. You are getting to few carbs and to little calories.

The muscles being swollen are due you eating a pizza which has lots of calories, and lots of carbs which fills up the glycogen stores in the muscles, and also because pizza has tons of salt in it usually which makes the body hold more water which makes the muscle bloat up and look and feel full. If you want to look huge take in salt, eat carbs and drink water, go lift and you get a sick fricking pump.

      > Chicken, rice, broccoli and avocado just aren't enough to sustain a white ethiopian like me.
I bet that it is you use white rice, you add some salt to it the meal like z0ysauce for example, and you get enough total calories in.

You feel cold because you are eating to little carbs and to little calories.

      >What kind of disorder is this?
Its you not knowing enough about diet, fitness etc in order to understand what is happening so you are making a incomplete and wrong picture of what is happening. I think its called being a moron and overestimating what you know. But fear not there is a cure!

      >I can't eat traditionally healthy or get down to a low bf% because it makes my hand hurt (I'm 5'8'' 140lbs btw) but I don't want to be shelling out $30 on food a day either.

You can eat healthy traditional food and feel just as good as you are on your dirty bulk food but you have to make actual good food that has enough calories and micro nutrients. When you "eat like a influencer" your diet is too restrictive so you end up feeling like shit.

Wow thanks brother! Awesome posts friend. When I tried keto last year I noticed my hand pain shot the frick up and my hands were ice fricking cold all the time. I was definitely not getting that post-prandial thermic effect that a hearty helping of carbs gives me. Interestingly enough onions, huel, and plenny shakes also made my hands really cold and arthritic feeling.

In regards to salt and water retention helping, I tried creatine supplementation 2 years back and I noticed that almost completely eliminated my pain and I was able to play Doom Eternal virtually pain-free. Do you think that creatine-induced water retention achieves something similar to eating uber carb-heavy, super salty foods (e.g. pizza)?

I would love to get back in the weight room but it's just so hard to get the stars to align diet and sleep-wise so I don't feel like I'm on the verge of passing the frick out after 3 sets of curls. My sleep and diet is entirely to blame for this, I think. I had korean BBQ a few months back and the day after I woke up energized and I actually had to stop myself in the gym because it felt like I could go on forever. Just previous to that I was semi-living off of joylent shakes and I would wake up feeling blown the frick out and couldn't even get through a session of cardio without hitting the wall pretty much immediately.

But yeah I noticed that on days I DO manage to get a good arm workout in I have significantly less pain. It's just hard to be consistent with the diet. I have to eat SO FRICKING MUCH. Having korean BBQ every single day simply is not economically tenable for me but I am working on cheaper homemade alternatives. I just fried up and ate like half a pound of ground beef with toast and I feel pretty good right now.

Just wish I were one of those guys that can just throw down a handful of nuts and get back to work; I need a fricking buffet every day just to be able to knock out a set of preachers.

This makes it seem like you are someone that does not work out at all, probably has extremely little physical activity, and your body is probably extremely weakened by the lifestyle you are living. And that is 100% causing the pain you are experiencing. DO NOT GET SURGERY. Do you hear me? DO. NOT. GET. SURGERY. You do not need surgery to fix this. You need lifestyle changes. Surgery can make things work. They tend to work well in the short term but long term the pain comes back. Its also fricking insanely ridiculus to have fricking surgery because you are living like a fricking ghoul breaking down your body and getting overuse injuries from to much gaming. Absolute fricking insanity.

I have lived that lifestyle my self for many years, very little food, mostly junk food, tons of energy drinks, coffee, fricked up sleep all over the place, being a NEET, literally spending 16 hours a day at the computer, getting all sorts of carpal tunnel pain, tendon pain, overuse shit out the fricking ass. This shit is 100% lifestyle induced and its 100% fixable by some very easy steps. Its just beyond fricking moronic to get surgery over something like that.

        >Do you think that creatine-induced water retention achieves something similar to eating uber carb-heavy, super salty foods (e.g. pizza)?
You do not have to eat uber heavy carb meals with super salty food. You need to eat a NORMAL amount of carbs, and salt. You need to eat a normal healthy diet that. By the way you write here it appears that you do not actually know how to have a _normal healthy diet_. You are going in to extremes. I do not think that the solution to your arm pain is to be on uber heavy carb meals with super levels of salt and creatine.

You seem like someone that does not have their life in order, that is living extremely unhealthy. And i am betting you are neurotic and anxious and you overthink shit and you are doing that now with your arm thing. This is likely exaggerated by the lack of activity, sleep and diet. Which also causes general aches and pains and increases feelings of pain in general.

        >I would love to get back in the weight room but it's just so hard to get the stars to align diet and sleep-wise
Get your life in order and also stop making excuses. Its like this, despite having fricking up sleeping pattern, do you ever sleep? If so, do you sleep for about 6-8 hours at a time? Yes. If so, well then that is your "night of sleep" and it does not matter when you sleep, as long as you get those 6 hours you count that as a night of sleep. You no longer have any reason to not work out because of lack of sleep.

        Stop overthinking you arm shit.
Learn how to do eat. Learn how to cook different meals so you have 4 daily meals.
Start working out ASAP. Stop using sleep an diet as excuse.
Reduce your gaming, when you browse the internet have the mouse in your other hand.

Yeah it could be that the water retention adds some extra cushioning that makes its more comfortable for the nerve etc when at the computer.

This is exactly what I was thinking and I am literally going to buy some creatine monohydrate online after I (attempt) to bang out some arms. It was uncanny how it made my ulnar nerve pain VANISH and let me whip around my mouse shooting demons like I was 15 again. I just felt nothing. Simply nothing, like normal.

Yep, I've thought about that a lot, too. I remember when I was on keto I no longer got that post feeding brain fog/sluggishness/food coma feeling. Not that keto didn't come with its own set of problems, but I did enjoy coming out of a meal with the same head and body I went in with. I will speak to my dietician about this thanks I probably need an A1C done. Thing is I am an absolute stick.

          welcome to arthritis

Wouldn't surprise me all that much either, dbh. But I gotta do what I gotta do to make the pain go away frick living like this.

Not a doctor but there’s a slight possibility it could be related to constricted blood vessels, have you ever noticed improvement from eating things that dilate blood vessels like chocolate?

              >slight improvement
There's a SIGNIFICANT improvement in the hand/ulnar nerve pain I experience when I eat something like pizza that gets my veins popping out.

My left arm (pic rel) is much better than my right and is more vascular.

This (pic rel) is my right arm/mouse hand, and it's less vascular and smaller and just generally atrophied compared to my left. So yeah circulation definitely plays a role. I get veinier pumps in my left arm, too. The veins on my right tend to look flat and 2-D much of the time.

This will basically fix your body, fix your arm, and you don't have to get surgery. Do not underestimate how weak and fricked up the body gets when you live completely sedentary and eat like shit. You went from keto to z0ylent shakes for fricks sake. Then you do "fitness influencer diet" which are to low in carbs and total calories. What you have not done yet is a normal diet. I don't understand what it is with people these days, all they do is meme diets that are extreme, they get shitty results from it and when they try to eat healthy they go overboard being to restrictive, feel like shit and then they conclude it don't work when its their approach there is something wrong with.

Also this kind of looks like a troll to be honest but whatever, i like helping people out and if this is sincere, which it looks like this shit can help you avoid surgery. Its that easy.

      >Also this kind of looks like a troll to be honest
It's not. I am literally behind the keyboard typing this right now. I am a real person behind the screen.

I don't game that much anymore, either, which is ironic because that's a big part of why I got the carpal and cubital tunnel release in the first place. My EMG went from "caution"/yellow numbers pre-op to "excellent"/green numbers post-op and I am able to game much longer without having to worry about pain TOO MUCH but obviously it still hurts or else I wouldn't have even bothered making this thread. I literally played dota all March and April, for example, whereas prior to surgery I would not have been able to do that. SO surgery has enabled my gaming addiction again but for the past couple months I just haven't really been playing except here and there and it helps my hand pain...but doesn't eliminate it. I fiended on games in my teens and early twenties though. Fricking fiended on them and I stopped working out right around when I really fricked my shit up and I had to stop gaming entirely for a few years.

      >just workout, bro
I'm also not that sedentary (I work a physical job) but I still find it difficult to get through a proper lifting session without feeling like I'm going to faint. I can do cardio just fine, and I do do cardio, but I feel like I'm allergic to weights now. Makes my TMJ worse sometimes, as well. I'm fairly certain I just need to eat better, though, and I'll be set. My sleep I am working on as well and I have noticed a strong correlation between my sleep quality and whether or not I feel like I'm going to pass the frick out in the gym but that's not why I'm here.

      >By the way you write here it appears that you do not actually know how to have a _normal healthy diet_.
You're right I don't. I've been youtube'ing bodybuilder bulking diets/meal plans for the past few days for some ideas as it seems like a good template for a guy with my body type but idk. Thanks again btw.

Believe it or not that shit works for me. If I don't have my "daily dose" of five guys on days I work I'll feel lightheaded and tired. I feel good after eating that shit, no joke. 1500 caloric bomb worth of burgers and fries and double meat subs do my body good. It gets me through tough days at work and I have dark-souls-trialed-and-errored my way to that conclusion.

As for pizza, I'll hand that one to you. Fricking processed meat and cheese marinara slathered pies aren't good for you. But dude. The proof is in the pudding.
