heartrate while running

hello IST buddies

I recently started running (important note: complete amateur and moron) because it's supposedly good for me (I have slightly low blood pressure and some heart thing that makes it unable to regulate my blood pressure properly, but it's pretty controlled and I never really experience significant symptoms)

I bought a smartwatch-like thing, and I immediately noticed a high resting heart rate, in the 70s or 80s. Pretty bad, but one more reason for me to run, so far as it should lower it. Anyways, when I went for a short run with it, it tracked my heart rate; showing that, after just a couple of minutes of light running, it reached the 180s/190s. Me being the smart guy I am, I paid no mind to it because I thought it was good to get my heart rate very high during exercise. Turns out it's not that good.

However, I'm able to have full on conversations with people with no trouble while running with my heart rate like that, I'm able to keep that pace and heart rate for over 40 min.

What should my next step be? My BMI is around 20, my blood is normal, no thyroid issues etc.

    Smart watches do not accurately measure heart rate generally because they can pick up your foot steps and count them as your heart. A chest strap heart rate monitor is far more accurate.

    If you are unwilling to get another heart rate monitor, there's a very easy solution. People who are aerobically deficient generally only really need to do zone 2 (~70% of your max heart rate, should be around 150-160 bpm) training. If you can breathe through your nose the entire time, you are in zone 2 or below.

    I recommend reading "Training for the Uphill Athlete". It's a really good and in-depth book that covers pretty much everything you need to know about running and other aerobic sports.

      That day, I put my hand on my neck and could feel it doing its thing like 3 times a second. About my resting heart rate, I did the same thing for a minute and counted around the same heart rate as my watch reported.

      I'll try running again in about 30 min and accurately measure it

        Step count doesn't trick my fitbit

        mine is an honor band 6, which people say has good sensors. idk about your opinions on these chinese brands, though

      Based uphill athlete recommender. Can’t remember which chapter it is that talks about how the majority of your training should be below your aerobic threshold. Upped the shit out of my mileage

    The watch is probably wrong then. If you're in zone 5 cardio like that it's usually impossible to talk through. What brand is the watch?

        Odd, they're Chinese but I know they usually make decent phones. If you can breath and talk through it I wouldn't worry. You could go get an EKG but last time I did they charged me $3000 and treated me like a hypochondriac (I am one). Here's a good chart for future use in judging your real heart rate.

    But these aren't bad numbers?
    I assume by resting heart rate you mean sitting down during the day? Because actual resting heart rate is measured in your sleep, when it's the lowest. During the normal day, it's 60-90 for average people just doing normal stuff.
    190 for a running isn't that high, especially if you're pushing yourself. How fast were you going?
    On my routine 11km jogs I have about 160 average and 180 max. If you're complete amateur, having elevated HR like that seems completely normal to me. Run some more, slower and longer runs, and things should improve.

      the thing is i'm not really pushing myself, i could be running at like 11km/h for 5 minutes and it'd get to that. what worries me is that maintaining it above 180 for like half an hour doesn't sound healthy.

          honestly, I don't have that information tracked yet. I've probably ran like 5 times, once a week maybe. Each one going from 3 to 6 km. I'm a complete beginner

            So you're beginner. Start running consistently, as you see comfortable. I'd suggest 10km per week is enought. The improvements will skyrocket in the first 3 months, and after that measure the heart rate once again.
