Most other proper sports still maintain the integrity of the game even if there is cheating. You still have to actually play the game. Even compared to Oly lifting you can't cheat in any way close to powerlifting. It's too much of an embarrassment to call it a sport.

Why don't they just ban sumo and hyper arching? It would instantly make powerlifting more watchable and less of a meme.

this is what I try to explain every time some gay comes on here asking why sumo is looked down upon. Powerlifting forms that use mechanical trickery to move the most weight and minimize ROM cheat you of actually getting stronger. These forms like sumo and bench arching are just a stupid arms race that has unfortunately developed in PL to "technically" win--- to "technically" do a lift--- whereas sticking to conventional DL or upper-arms-to-parallel benching actually build functional strength and size by PURPOSEFULLY doing a difficult, inefficient, long motion that presents a challenge through the entire range of motion and more closely matches real world scenarios. Powerlifting forms have become about self-defeating hyperefficiency, whereas (imo) good strength training is about paradoxically making yourself do the maximum amount of work in an inefficient motion

Not that anon, but I bench with a slight arch since I get better pec activation and I always touch my chest but by the end I’m around parallel usually a little past

                Anonymous

yeah I'm assuming that it's touching chest + upper arms to parallel or lower. The upper arms to parallel is just to make sure you don't have this insane high arching bullshit

Do you know any powerlifters in real life? Ever been to a meet? 95% of powerlifters aren’t doing this meme shit. They might pull sumo but they usually still have a good range of motion. And the cheaty stuff doesn’t even help that much, especially since the biggest and strongest people don’t have the mobility to do it, so it doesn’t usually show up in records.

They can fix arch just by making a rule that elbows have to go below parallel, just like your hip crease in the squat

PL is not fun to watch for a lot of other reasons, not just form hacking. It's a 3 event meme that takes forever to set up just to watch someone half ROM a lowbar squat with frick tons of equipment. Olympic weightlifting usually only takes an hour to stream out and it's much more impressive. The cost of being more accessible is that it's much harder to watch because there's so many fricking competitors.

You will never convince Reddit powerlifters that sumo is easier. These guys will try to convince you that SBD sleeves only add 5 lbs to squat. That's how hopeless they are

      Anonymous

SBD sleeves aren't wraps my dude. They add minimal weight to your squat.

      Anonymous

SBD sleeves are only 7mm thick, they aren't anything like wraps. It's hard to bend your knee without being under load with wraps whereas sleeves are just supportive

        Anonymous

I have some cheap sleeves from Amazon that have a few holes in them and are years old but I can comfortably squat 30lbs more with them on.

I squat lower than competition dictates but it really helps on the bottom 1/4 of a squat. I hate using them because they smell gross after 1 or 2 uses and I hate putting them on and off. I just lowered my weight and I'm trying to fix my patellar tendonitis through form and slow progress.

Any ideas on restricting the rules to prevent abuse while not banning it completely?
Maybe something like a minimum allowed angle between the shin and the floor when measured from medial side, so that morons can't do fricking splits? Or maybe maximum foot width calculated from femur length?

      Anonymous

Maximum stance width like bench. Shins can't be more than xx cm apart, and knees must be in line with ankles.

You'd send pretty much every leveragemaxxer to the grave with this one, and the sport might suffer as a whole, but it'd seriously cut down on how often certain weight class records get smashed because a genetic outlier spent 4 months peaking his deadlift

The stance width would essentially help "enforce" the knees/ankle alignment, while giving an individual some freedom in technique still, i.e. feet forward more, or out to the sides more. Both can be done regardless of anthropomorphology, and abide by both rules

Powerlifting is a joke. The only lifts I care about keeping track of anymore are strict OHP, axle bar deadlift (with straps, just to avoid bar bend), stone to shoulder, and log pressing. I still do stuff like sumo deadlifts and bench presses to help get stronger but I'm not bragging about them when the numbers are so inflated.
