I just assume something got lost in translation.

Like, I've heard stories about Freeman Dyson, that he was just so busy all the time he never slept more than an hour at a time. Then there's the Piraha people of the Amazon who will take fifteen minute naps throughout the day, rarely sleeping through the night.

      Anonymous

most people's problem isn't not enough time, it's not doing enough with the time they have. being constantly sleep deprived (which you will be, you can't "adapt" to sleeping 3 hours less a night unless you're already sleeping 10+ hours a night) is only going to make you less efficient with the time you have. Get proper sleep, spend less time on IST and other screen-based leisure activities, don't waste time drinking/hungover, and you can get a shitton done in your time on this earth.

I never said spend 0 time. Nothing wrong with having a bit of downtime in between or after being productive. Humans have a limited capacity for being productive, your brain needs time to recharge. Spending 16 hours working is likely to be less productive than spending 12 hours working and 4 hours relaxing.

        >being this wrong
gladiators generally had a nice layer of fat on them because if you're getting cut, the layer of fat makes the injury less serious (since cutting fat is less damaging than cutting muscle). Probably not 300 lbs but without roids it's impossible to be 300 lbs while still having a decent % of muscle. I don't know for sure on warriors but I would imagine that similar logic applies there.

At a certain point i wasn't even able to lift like i used to, got some blood work done and found out that i wasn't nearly as healthy as i thought.

Realistically, very few people do any sort of balanced workout and alot of people simply fall into a workout routine that is easy for them and then justify it later (i.e. people with terrible endurance and eating discipline become "powerlifters", onions boys who treat a plate like it weighs as much as a car take up endurance running). Eventually you become ego invested into whatever it is that you do and will create reasons for why its better than what everyone else does

Ultimately, you have to decide what's most important to you: Physique, health, or putting up numbers. Realistically you have to chose one to prioritize.

Besides, NPC crossfit thinking like this is inherently retarded. You can lift for more than just maximizing health. You can do it for aesthetics or just for fun with peak health being secondary; these are hobbies and there's more than one way to do it. It's like reading. Yes, we all read to learn something, but does that mean every single book this moron or anyone reads must be some scientific literature? No, you can read for pleasure too.

    Yes but not really.

They are in shape, just not athletic. The journey from being out of shape to doing a triathlon is measured in years, the journey from being in decent shape to doing a triathlon is months.

Here's what someone who's out of shape needs to improve:
    >VO2 max
    >Lean tissue
    >Bone density
    >Circulation
    >Discipline/self-motivation

Here's what an aesthetic bodybuilder needs to improve:
    >VO2 max

      >Bodybuilders/gymrats have large, explosive, glycolitic muscle fibers that excel only in instantaneous force production. These fibers fatigue in less than two minutes, and are practically inactive during aerobic exercise. A gymrat is carrying pounds and pounds of useless weight on them when it comes to triathlon. Fast twitch fibers require constant refilling of glycogen stores to function optimally. Having fast twitch fibers will also tax your heart more during exercise as they still require oxygen to just exist.

      >Triathletes, amateur and pro have small and efficient muscle fibers that simply do not produce large amounts of force in a short period of time. However, these muscle fibers have incredible force production over an extended interval, and do not need (much) glucose. These fibers can function optimally for hours, and days at a time with little or no sign of fatigue.

Endurance sports like tri are much more than just Vo2Max.

      Ability to sustain lactate threshold

      Functional threshold power

      Aerobic capacity

Are an additional three metrics that separate gym rats and endurance athletes. A gym rat probably would need years to do an Olympic tri with any level of competence.

Picking things up for two mins at a time is not going to train you to run distance, swim distance, or cycle distance for 2+ hours with no rest. It will most likely set you back.

I think a skinny college freshman who played HS soccer for one year would transition to triathlon faster and more competitively in one year than a gymrat with 5yrs of weight training could.

honestly been going through a similar revelation myself. I am approaching 30, and my injuries have been kind of stacking up over the years.

Been chasing higher weights all my life. eating a shitload of calories, getting nice dopamine watching squat numbers go up slowly month by month, year by year. However my meniscus have been getting fucked up from so much squatting.
Im realizing a 400+ lb squat achieves nothing but injuries. I'm not going to the Olympics. I'm not going to medal at a powerlifting meet.

So been progressing much more casually these days, with a bit more focus on bodybuilding and cardio. I still do strength train, but not as intensely as I did when i was 18-19. I also stopped eating fuck load of calories.

I do envy those that are able to continue chasing heavy weights as they get older, but for me, its been much more chill and I actually enjoy getting pumps in the gym now, especially being injury/ pain free now.
