Hey, I asked this before but I forgot.

Hey, I asked this before but I forgot. IS it better for someone who has never worked out in their life, daily drives a computer desk, doesn't get any exercise and smokes weed and stuff, to work out every day or to start out small. Or how would I go about it without hurting myself? I really wanna get fit and cherish my body but I'm stuck in this loop of comfortability and being at my desk routinely. Help a sod out, you were once like me.

TL;DR. I never worked out, I have 0 fitness, and I don't want to hurt myself jumping head first. Any tips? Should I like start with push ups only and see if I can stick to that or what.

If youre morbidly obese start walking to places, if youre skelly mode start with basic bodyweight exercises. Then when you get more used to either of these start at a gym with low weight dumbbells or low weight machines. Essentially, look at what others at the gym are doing as their warm ups and consider that your full workout routine. Give it a month of consistently doing these simple and softer exercises and youll see increased performance tenfold.

Things to avoid would be anything that places too much stress on your joints, if youve never exercised before jumping into dumbbells of anything 10+ is going to frick you up because of your weakness, and youll also have no mind body connection to get form down properly. Similarly running esp if youre fat will frick up your knees in the same way, start off with a light routine a possible that still raises your heart rate for a consistent time period.

Yeah my heart is my biggest concern, I know lots of fit people think cardio is a joke for some reason but why would a good heart be a joke? Anyway I heard that too much cardio tho is just as bad as zero, and I think all my sitting down and sleeping daily for a while now, has my heart not so good, so that's my main worry is you know working out too hard and blowing up my heart, or getting a heart attack.

I'm going to be real with you. You will not be able to do "too much cardio". This is in reference to people that run marathons and do endurance biking. You really risk injuring your knees right now running depending on weight. Elliptical, bike, and swimming are low impact cardio. Keep In mind you are years of dedicated training away from doing too much cardio.
Finally, you should feel tired. You should feel sore. You should not feel pain. If you feel pain stop. It's better to slow down than risk weeks of recovery.

I'm also 5'6 around 130 (probably less since I just been sitting down all the time and sleeping) and I have a super fast metabolism

Good on you for wanting to make a positive change OP. How's your diet? Making small changes here and there can do a lot to make you feel better.

Starting small is the way to go. If you jump in head first and go every day, you'll probably injure yourself or not give your body enough rest. Rest is just as important as activity when it comes to improving your health.

If the prospect of going to a gym is a bit daunting or expensive, try calisthenics or home exercises. Climbing is also heaps fun and is a good place to meet people. It's also very newbie friendly if you go to a gym with an intro belay class.

If you can make a habit of going somewhere after work or before work, you can turn that in to an exercise habit.

My diet is weird, I try to eat a variety all the time, so I'm always getting different nutrients and stuff, but I don't cook my own food, and I eat normal consoomer stuff, like a baloney sandwich with pickles and lettuce or something. And then Ill eat fruit the next day. Honestly I think trying to eat a variety and not just anything, has saved me a little because I am somewhat conscious of what goes into my body and if I only eat say hot pockets or frozen pizza all day, I WILL feel like shit and want to eat a fruit or veggie. But I'm not anywhere near as healthy as I think I am. At least I dont feel like it. I do want to learn to cook tho, and obviously eat a lot better, but like I said I been daily driving my desk for a while and it's become routine and comfortable my body always comes back to my desk like muscle memory.

If money isn't too much of an issue, try putting in deli turkey in that sandwich or some other leaner/less processed meat. I totally get the appeal of convenient frozen meals but ditto on the feeling terrible afterwards. There's a meme I saw somewhere about how your 20s will involve making the most mediocre stir-frys of your life but damn if they aren't effective at getting in the habit of cooking hot food. You can grab a bag of frozen veggies, some liquid aminos and chicken/protein of choice and kind of just throw that together until you find a combo you like. It also gets you more comfortable with cooking. Quiches/frittatas are also pretty forgiving since they're basically just baked eggs and ingredients, and they reheat pretty well the next day.

You can do it anon, I'm fat still sure, but I'm not a hungry skelly anymore.
Start with stretches, walks and bodyweight exercise.
Focus now on strengthening your tendons so when you build muscle you don't hurt yourself.
Tendons take longer to train than muscle and if they can't support your gains you gonna hurt yourself.
Do basic couch 2 5k for cardio.
Body weight stuff like mountain climbers for more cardio.
Stick to whatever weight is comfy for you but I recommend maxing out at 15-20lb dumbbells for exercise right now.
If you respond to this post I can provide links if you're interested.

Other anons giving great advice here. I can tell you personally Op that when I started, consistency was my top priority. Make it a habit. Designate times to go to the gym and stick to them unless you’re especially sick. After a few months, going to the gym will just be a part of your life. Good luck

Look up stretches on YouTube or read about them and create a good and fairly in-depth stretching routine. One that takes probably 5 - 10 minutes to do and goes over most of your body. Do it when you get up, before you work out, and before you get in bed every night. i found it helpful to start weights much lower than what I could actually do in order to avoid injuries and excessive soreness. It slows down progress but I’ve yet to ever have a day that I don’t work out because I’m sore like I used to have. Then for low weight high repetition exercises do the opposite and push yourself pretty hard. This worked well for me and I came from a similar background. And stop smoking weed you fricking hippy.

Dude, sense I found IST and started thinking about fitness and stuff, I really am into stretching and yoga. Mostly cuz im short and it could help me grow a little but also cuz I wanna be flexible cuz I assume it feels really free. How flexible are you? And again I think flexibility and mobility from yoga and stretching are the most important thing about fitness and stretching, next to food. Do you agree?

I don’t know if stretching is the most important for weights but I think it isn’t talked about as much as it should be. But it might be for every day quality of life. I’ve had extenuating circumstances and haven’t been able to work out and stretch as much as I used to and my overall quality of life has dropped a decent amount. I’ve thought for a long time it’d be interesting to see the long term effects if you psyopped the population into doing multiple daily stretch routines and getting a one to three traditional Chinese / Indian massages a month. If the food supply were to be fixed and the previously stated were to be implemented across society I think you’d see people regularly reach 90 - 100. Since you like stretching so much I’d advise trying to find someone in your local area that does the traditional eastern massages like you’d see on Timur Doctorov’s YouTube channel. If you think stretches change your life, this will double whatever stretching did if it’s done right. I hope I can manage to get my life in order at the same time the guy who does those massages does so I can be stretching, lifting, and getting a few of those massages all at the same time.

A little to start. The reason that many fail is that they set some extreme, unsustainable goal like working out every which inevitably stumbles and results in people giving up.

Sustainable change is the result of sustainable behaviors. Pick something that you can stick to and just make it a part of your daily and weekly routine. I am like you in that I spend hours at my desk for work. I started by doing a yoga program 20-30min MWF after closing out of work in order to stretch out after being in a chair. A similar option would be going for a walk after work or during lunch. This will get you moving and provide a mental break between work and home life. Once you get something like this habit in your life, you'll likely feel better and then start working on the next thing.

I unironically like bodyweight stuff for this because it removes the need for gym membership, travel to a specific location, or equipment purchase. For starting from 0 I like both kboges and the Starting Bodyweight philosophies. Boges imo has a great starting point of limiting scope of workout and just focusing on good form. The starting bodyweight has good information for variations of exercise accessible at every level.
