Yes when I go in the morning. There are a few boomers who are very friendly and fun to talk to. One of them is actually my classmates dad from way back when I was like 12 years old. Otherwise no. I don’t really talk to or pay attention to any of the zoomers/millennials who go during the day or at night.
Just returned to real gym after 2+ years of lockdown-driven home gym. Feels SOOOO fricking good. The Greeks had it right: exercise is a social activity.
I like it but I go through phases of being social and being not so social. It's sucks when the social element is unwelcome but you have to keep up with it because other people aren't as inconstant.
Unfortunately not. The missus lifts with me a lot of the time, and depending on what I'm doing for my main compound that day, they all end being used. I'd like to pick up at least 2 more pairs of Hampton deep dishes.
Ditch the cable machine and get rings for your tricep work.
I definitely would prefer rings for a number of movements, but my right elbow and shoulder are fricked from half a lifetime of baseball, so dips with rings just isn't happening without pain. Plus it has a low and high pulley, so it's used for a lot of other movements other than push/pull downs.
>so dips with rings just isn't happening without pain. Plus it has a low and high pulley, so it's used for a lot of other movements other than push/pull downs.
Oh fair enough. I would still highly recommend you get the rings just to do static holds, it's great for your shoulder health.
Yes but I am a Eurocuck and as such have to live in a shoebox and the space limitations are quite annoying. I even have to use a 5' bar and can't fit a cage.
Most gyms here suck and most people that lift are insecure low tier criminals or bouncers that want to look intimidating. I used to go to a decent gym with good people but I also had to drive an extra 20-30 minutes each way and paid 3x the average fee.
Yeah the time saved was the biggest factor for me. Saving money on a home gym vs a membership is unlikely. My old gym was a 15 minute drive both ways. So 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, comes out to around 130 hours a year spent sitting in a vehicle. I can always make more money, but I'll never have more time.
yes, and? what's wrong with not being a social butterfly?
it is also for people who values efficiency over socialization
i want to lift, not chitchat
i like being able to do my lifts at my own pace, take my own time, not have to share equipment all the time
it is great not having to waste extra time with transportation, arriving home from job means i also arrived at the gym already
if i feel the need to have a random chat with random people, internet does the job
Nah, this dude on IST knows all there is to know about social awareness, and definitely doesn't have people wishing he'd frick off so they can finish their workout
the thing about public gyms is people using equipment u wanna use and morons asking to work in. lol like wtf? u want me to keep putting on and off weights every time i need to do my reps? what moron wagie peasant shit is that?
Unless you have a very convenient gym you can go to, you are probably wasting a massive amount of time not building a home gym and saving yourself the commute time & waiting on equipment.
Only if you are an advanced lifter does it make sense to go to an actual gym because of more access to specific equipment.
Spending $5K on a home gym will get you pretty allow you to complete every exercise you can think of or something similar.
That home gym will be worth a similar amount if you bought years later. Meanwhile you are probably spending 1K/year to get into a decent gym and wasting $15+ worth of time commuting/waiting on equipment each time you go -- assuming you make $30/hr and waste 30 mins (which is probably an underestimate). So going to the gym is probably costing you at least $3-4K a year minimum in lost time and membership fees.
>Spending $5K on a home gym
I guess inflation has been bad, but I don't think it costs $5k to build a decent home gym. All you really need is adjustable dumbbells, bench, a squat rack, bar, and weights for said bar. You don't have to splurge on equipment, 20lbs from Bowflex doesn't weigh more than 20lbs from Yes4All. I'd say if you're spending more than $3k on everything you're getting ripped off
Oh cool, im in the greek countryside too, but still not enough space for a real gym since im still renting into my thirties, mine looks more like a collage of fitness memes the more i look at it, one day hopefully.

I go to a small gym where everything is almost always free, no waiting time and i dont mind the people at all.
If i would train at home exclusively i would miss so many exercises i could have done at the gym, my chest day is 4 exercises while i could only do 2 at home for example.
It just feels way better giving yourself a big pump around people as well.
>eat like a king somewhere else
where. The good gyms I know of are 20-30 miles away, through horrendous traffic. They charge 100 a month.
The other gyms are closer, charge a little less, but have shit bars and plates.
ALL the bars have no knurling, octogonal plates, and mirrors that are okay but unnecessary.
Then the machines are only somewhat maintained.
I can buy stuff cheap off some nice boomers/older lifters and use it at home.
I can easily train/ help my mom at any time.
I have yes, I've got quite a good squat rack and bench but I'm using my grandad's 50/60 year old weights which don't exceed 50lbs a side.
Where would I find more plates for cheap?
I should probably get a new bar at some point as well, but it's just surface level rust atm
facebook marketplace, craigslist, and offerup.
If it's standard plates you can get .50 dollars a pound for plates. Olympic weights tend to be 1 dollar or higher a pound.
Depending on the bar it could be very good or normal shit.

any tips for buying a pulley machine? I'm considering pic related (200$ new), mostly because it's the only one below few thousands $ that has a middle pulley, but it looks like I still won't be able to do paloff presses with it because of the way it's built, the cable would fall out of the reels at any sideway movement. it doesn't look very stable too. I'm other consideration is a pulley attachment for my rack. it has a great build quality and weight pins for oly plates, but has only a low and high pulley and is way overpriced at 750$
I would buy used but I don't know your market.
You could just get the cheap one now, use it till it breaks, and then get the better one because you know you will use it.
Yeah it depends on the circumstances one is in for sure, if i did not have a nice small gym nearby i would be building up our basement as a homegym as well.
I could not stand traveling for a long time as well, my way to the gym is like 2 minutes with a moped. Lucky i guess.
That's understandable. My wife works from home plus we live out in the sticks, so we make an effort to have people over or go to gatherings with friends at least every other week, even if we arent feeling up to it.
That sounds like a good idea anon for sure. I got a dip bar outside with a really sturdy metal pole kinda thing outside of my apartment. Thats shaped like a T. It can be used for a dip bar in the interim
I did, years ago >Squat rack >adjustable bench >Deadlift station >pull-up/dip/abs station >lat-pull station >T-bar row >OLY bar >adjustable dumbbells >indoor bike >hundreds of pounds of weights
Too bad I can't use most of it nowdays because I get crippling neck pain when I perform certain lifts. I am about to sign up for the local gym and work out with a focus on high rep/lower weights and probably a bunch of machine weights.

Just bought a condo and starting on my home gym today, lads. Need some ideas.
Currently have the Concept2 next to my bed, debating whether to put that or my computer desk in the gym room. I know people say to keep your bedroom just for sleeping, but I'd like other people's takes on maximizing floor area use.
Also trying to figure out how I should position the lifting equipment. I'm thinking I should put the power rack in the corner of the room that makes up the corner of the building, since I assume that's the strongest area of floor. Can construction anons verify whether that's a good idea?
*also: the room height is 90 inches so I can't throw a full-size power rack with a pull-up bar in there. are squat stands really all that safe? I used to squat from wooden posts stuffed in concrete buckets but 20 year old me took risks 25 year old me can't afford

Yes and it's the best shit ever. No commute lets you work out so much more and doing some reps in the morning before showering and going to work is the best shit ever. Makes you feel alive for the rest of the day.
Never went to the gym for socialization so no loss in that aspect. Plenty of other places where I can talk to people.

Both of these are accurate. I don't talk to people much so I fall into the homegym camp. Maybe in a couple years I will go to a hardcore gym but right now I don't need that.
I like pullups on a bar, but I like chinups on the rings, it feels like it hits the biceps better. I've also been trying to learn ring push ups but they're tougher than I thought they would be.
How can I do pullups indoors with a low ceiling? I can set up a bar outside but I like knocking out sets throughout the day and having to go out reduces the convenience factor so I won't do it as much.
I can't find a free standing bar that sets up at like 4 or 5 feet. The ceiling is 6'5" feet high and I'm 6'1". I can't do full range of motion or I'd hit my head.
Yes
Yes, but I'm trying not to go overboard rn because I'm still moving around for my job
After seeing all the tiktok shit going on and people recording you in the gym, yes I have taken the home gym pill.

yes

How much did it cost to build that? I don't have a shed but I'm deeply considering making one.
What's pictured there is probably $10000 or more. Could diy something functional for much less, but that cement pad will be a sticking point.
im not gonna take a pic of all my shit but ill list what i got.
Hex Dumbbells 10-30 Pds
35 Pd KettleBell
20 Pd Weighted Vest
Bodyblade
15 Pd Resistance band
a beaded jump rope
get a dip station, pull up bar and a dip belt as well and you should be set. that 20lb weight vest isnt gonna last very long for you
That sounds like a good idea anon for sure. I got a dip bar outside with a really sturdy metal pole kinda thing outside of my apartment. Thats shaped like a T. It can be used for a dip bar in the interim

Mid-unpacking hence the mess. Bowflex is my fiance's
why not just buy an adjustable kettlebell? it's cheaper and saves space. I admit the whole set looks cool, though
They don't go heavy enough unless you want to pay KB Kings prices in which case it comes out to almost even for a pair.
Also I built the collection out as I needed it (except for the second 32 which just showed up on my doorstep one day in a weird shipping fluke) so the cost was defrayed over time
I meant an adjustable one for regular plates, but fair enough
KBs are used more than just swings

its an accessory, thats all i know. Rarely used it at the gym. its boring and doesnt feel like a workout. used it for triceps and lats.
when I get a home I will

what's in the white containers on the right?
I think that's a hydroponic system. Anon is lifting and growing shrooms or something.
Mushrooms don't require hydroponics

Troughs of pic related for chimpmaxxing
God I wish I was a burger, as a bong living in London if I want any sort of space I’m going to have to pay 400k+ for a house.

Does doing pushups in my studio apartment count?
Yeah I unloaded the bench barbell lopsided the first week and the tipped over and stamped a perfect circle into the floor
I wasn't expecting to buy any new weights, but I got this for a steal.

Gotta confuse the bar, right babe?
its a mindset
Wish I got rings earlier
looks like a skyrim screenshot in the thumbnail
Haha yeah it’s pretty cosy… when it’s warm.
It’s weird how brutal rings are. I’m 115kg bw so they beat the shit out of me. In pic rel I was doing bench superset with ring dips.
I like pullups on a bar, but I like chinups on the rings, it feels like it hits the biceps better. I've also been trying to learn ring push ups but they're tougher than I thought they would be.
They're dope right? When I started getting bored of my lifting routine I got rings and it rejuvenated my love for exercise.
All you anons should try them sometime.
How can I do pullups indoors with a low ceiling? I can set up a bar outside but I like knocking out sets throughout the day and having to go out reduces the convenience factor so I won't do it as much.
setup a bar lower and start kneeling or something
I can't find a free standing bar that sets up at like 4 or 5 feet. The ceiling is 6'5" feet high and I'm 6'1". I can't do full range of motion or I'd hit my head.
