Can I become reasonably skilled in boxing without a coach? There are enough youtube videos and boxing books that I feel like coaches are completely unnecessary, and the only reason boxing gyms still exist is to spar with other people.

I'm pretty skilled in sex without a partner if I may say so myself.

yes tbh. It's not really that complicated, the first girl I slept with was a total bawd and she thought I was more experienced than her. Just read stuff online on what to do so you're not surprised by anything and act confident.

Yes and no. You can get some good technique and cardio going on. But the bag doesn't punch back. I did really progressed with YT and home gym/bag
I like precision striking on youtube, great coach, good work out videos, in terms of speed, cardio and technique. Good stuff to stay in "fight" shape and then go test yourself in a gym.

Or I can just hang a bag of rice and use it as a punching bag

    Not really, no.

I think if all you do is punch a punching bag, you will develop a lot of bad habits. For one, most strikes miss, and so you need to be used to throwing a punch without making contact on something. When you make contact with a big heavy bag, you get used to "bouncing off" of it, like you will get used to throwing your whole body weight forward into the bag and then pushing your body weight back off the bag. This will hurt you in a fight, because if you throw your whole body weight forward, there probably wont be anything in front of you to bounce off (and you will likely miss), so you will stumble forward off balance. Maintaining your balance and your center of gravity are keys to striking.

There is also the fact that people punch back, so when training with a partner, you get immediate feedback on if you are being defensively sound, and if you are not telegraphing your punches. Like for example, there is no reason to keep your hands up when punching a bag. There isn't a reason either, to roll your shoulders over to protect your face, or to keep your chin down. There is also nothing telling you if your punches are slow, or if you are making any kind of tell that you are about to punch. Compare that to training with a partner, who will exploit whatever vulnerabilities you are exhibiting.

There are more things too but those are just some fundamentals that are absent when training alone.

What you say is only valid if you bag work like a moron. You need to picture in your head all that's coming to you, duck, keeps hand near chin, switch, pivot etc.
If you stay in front of your bags to throw bombs, I mean, are you even a boxer?

        >What you say is only valid if you bag work like a moron.

I can agree to that, but I also think people are who new or who never go into a class have very little ability to detect if they are being a moron.

They can consciously think about these things, but it is hard to know if you are actually doing them proficiently without a partner.

        Thats my opinion at least.

Like, sometimes I film myself striking to see what I am doing. And I might go up to the bag and think "Don't do X" and then just think about not doing X the entire time I am striking, and then look at the footage and I am still doing X. If it is that hard to consciously do something, when I have been striking for years, and I go into class every week, I think someone who is new who has no external feedback or judgement has no chance at all. I don't think it is just me either, because I hear phrases like "You think you are doing X, but you aren't a lot" in training (not directed at me).

There are like 10 important things to think about with every strike, and its difficult to do well in all 10 simultaneously when you have everything going in your favor- much less if you are a noob who has no idea what you are doing.

Fricking horrible advice. Shut the frick up, homosexual.

Show how its wrong and post physique.

won't shadowboxing and training smart as [...] said fix all that?
i mean of course it won't be the same as going all out with coching and sparring but the question is what level of proficiency can we achieve on our own, and how would that go against someone trained or untrained.

Shadow boxing would definitely help on the weight distribution stuff, since that is 100% missing.

Another thing that is important, is maintaining proper distance from your opponent, and keeping them where you want them. You can kind of train distance management with a bag, because you can gauge how far away the bag is, but you can't train keeping position since the bag doesn't move. When shadow boxing you can train moving around (being able to punch while running, walking, or shuffling is a crucial skill), but you aren't able to simulate moving into or out of proper distance since you have no target.

You won't learn timing, distance management or how to read incoming strikes. You'll get better than you are without doing anything, but you'd get smoked by anyone who actually trains.

      Anonymous

      >distance management
You can actually practice this. You stay far from the bag and make sure you have to step in before you throw, then move out of the zone, or pivot out. When I bag work, most my workout comes from in-outs, either stepping, double stepping with jab to close distance, shuffle entrances, push-pull, lots of shit you can do for distance management with a bag.
You do need to have formal training though.

        Anonymous

That's not the same as managing distance with an actual opponent. You can practice your entries and cutting angles, but you won't learn how to apply them correctly based on what your opponent is doing and how they're moving.
Also I train and know how to do bag work, it's still not an adequate substitute for sparring and partner drilling.

Have some myau thai and wrestling and you are good. Also just practice with a staff as a sword/staff style swinging for general fitness and application so you at least understand how staff-shaped objects work.

you ever seen a Black person or a Hispanic messing around with kicks? That's some goofy white boy shit that'll get you rekt in a streetfight. Which is why they never use that crap

            LOL
It's because you don't do round house kicks in the street fights. You either do hard push kicks to get the dude off your face, or small inside leg quick just to set that pivot for the right hand. You don't do leg kicks and head kicks are hard on a moving target.

spics and Black folk costantly lose streetfights though

This is simultaneously true and untrue.
A real kicker is dangerous af. Most strikers even in the UFC don't kick correctly. There's a reason you see so many homies break their shin in western MMA and you never see this in a Thai fight.
A kicker who knows how to kick correctly can btfo a wrestle-boxer pretty easily (see Adesanya and Than Le have proven this)

Low kicks, knees and elbows aren't a meme. Head kicks outside of sport basically are though. That said, you do still see the odd video of someone getting starched by a high kick on the street.

Ramsey Dewey, Punch Professor, Modern Martial Artist, off the top of my head. Great channels. Get Jack Dempsey's book "Championship Fighting", it's fantastic. I did boxing in my basement for like 3 months before a friend joined me, heavy bag, speed bag, using a slip bag, etc and actually sparring with my friends when they were able was great. Train by yourself but spar whenever you can. Remember to keep it light.

You need a coach to learn the basic strikes correctly but unless they are holding the pads for you too you can grind it out on a bag and spar. In order to become great you have to run and do bag work and have a coach hold pads for you.
In my opinion the coaches that teach groups of supposedly "intermediate" ans "advanced" boxers are just like mosquitoes.
Anything beyond novice level should be personal training or small groups.
