It really is. I got in on the ground floor at my gym which grandfathers me into the rate at sign-up but it's still $125 a month just for membership. I don't spend much on gi's though and just stick with affordable reliable stuff like Sanabul.

I love me some BJJ but it's hella expensive so unless you're trying to learn to better defend yourself I wouldn't recommend it.
The sport scene is absolutely moronic, too. Find a gym with a lot of cops, they're generally not as expensive and focused on real life instead of guard pulling.

Don't go to a nasty gym, and take a shower after you get off the mats. And for the love of God actually wash your Gis. If you're hygienic and train somewhere hygienic you won't get a skin condition, it's 100% preventable just by taking care of yourself.

It’s a side hobby at best. Full of sois, people who train every day and look average at best, strength and wrestling overwhelms practitioners a lot, expensive, too many women, no one wants to do stand up properly with me.

I put most of my effort into lifting. Something that isn’t risky, has best reward for effort ratio, and it’s something I use every day (by constantly mogging). Still keep up some bjj but twice a week. It’s kind of fun if I lift hard first and try not to win through strength alone. I miss my judo gym but there’s none around now and it would have the same problems limiting lifting anyway.

Lmao moron. You don't really get to that point until maybe purple belt. The first several years of BJJ are just a necessary element that you must endure to get to the point that it actually becomes easy to hit in a street fight and that just assuming you aren't fighting a trained striker. And how did you make it all the way to blue belt without realizing that people lose their game when they're out for a long time? I was a white belt when a blue belt that hadn't trained for a year came back and I crushed him. He had 40 pounds on me.

Judokas slap Jitsuhomies on the feet but get subbed on the ground. Wrestlers take the fight to the ground and wrestle the frick out of the bjj guy but ultimately get subbed because they don't know any subs or sub defense.

Proper Gracie jiu jitsu has no rules either, to be fair. The only metric for whether or not you win or lose is if someone taps out from being put in a submission hold of some kind, or if they get knocked unconscious. No points, no time limit, no referee decisions. It's a lot closer to the "real world" than most other martial arts. The whole reason why the Gracies divorced themselves from most tournament bodies was because they were tired of all the rules.

because i like standup alot more and many bjjbros either arent that good at it or dont want to train it with me, otherwise i love it because of how good they are on the ground, destroying me even if i get top position. id go if i had a gym close to me that wasnt too expensive, but with school and all ill stick to the uni judo club, might join the uni bjj club if theyre running this year.

I'm from Brazil, in every corner of my city there's a gym where the owner is an BJJ world champion, where everytime there's UFC athetles going in and out, it's at least a fun thing, should i try?

Absolutely. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

The biggest problem of all, what gym to choose, literally every gym is from one big shot in this industry.

        >Mario Reis BJJ (created Nicholas Meregali and is the biggest coach in the south region of Brazil)
        >Atos Guetho BJJ (one of the founder with Andre Galvao teach there)
        >Mario Sperry Bjj (PRIDE former athlete, two times ADCC champion)

And the list goes on with everyone of the list having at least made into UFC, ADCC or became a world champion.

Any of them will be great. It should pretty much just come down to your schedule and theirs

If every gym owner being a world champion doesn't tell you anything about how legit any of those gyms are, idk what else to tell you but classic monkey IQ.

It’s for closet homosexuals. I’ll knock out these fools with one punch. Royce Gracie was a fraud.

No, but after knowing a guy who became paralyzed from a BJJ related injury, I figure that since I don't plan to ever bother getting into a fight again, I'll just keep with lifting and not waste my time on other shit.

Judo has ne-waza which is, when properly taught, more than enough to outperform the average bjj'er

Brown belt training since 2010. Don’t care about competition or self defense. Just train to train.

Used to compete a little in powerlifting but got really bored with it. Nothing major like 1200 raw total in 198s. BJJ has been much more fun and interesting. Still lift a little and lots of body weight stuff.

Yes. I need to use my body for work. I did BJJ years ago and we were doing single leg take down defence/takedowns and when it was my turn to defend I was hoping on one foot for like a minute while this guy tried to take me down and he yanked me while I was mid air hoping and I landed on my foot the wrong way and couldn’t walk on it for a week. Thought I broke it but i didn’t. Shit was moronic. I’d rather do a real martial art like boxing, at least you can’t accidentally destroy your feet hitting pads and doing light sparring

Unironically yes. I'm worried about some spaz cranking me too hard because I'm extremely inflexible and ang injuries would keep me from training my main squeeze muay thai.

It does seem like an incredible sport and skill though, once I have a bit more time I'd love to give it a shot.

Its not hard to avoid spaz's. Just awkward. But if you have balls just say no to any white belt who wants to roll

Look up tai chi sloooooowwww squats and do high rep air squats, 200-500 at a time. Mix up your cadence/speed, etc. to keep from getting stale. Your knees in no time will be indestructible.

    SO.

the reason Judo mogs BJJ is against normies, having good stand-up makes you a Demi-god and the limited ground game is only if you have a shit club who doesn't train it at least 20% of the time. EVEN STILL your ground game will fricking demolish them. The grand point isnt about fighting other martial artists generally speaking but some drunk guy who wants to punch you.

Id rather have god standing technique and decent ground work than dogshit standing and godlike ground work.
