How do these compare to lat pulldowns?

I want to build back but the lat pulldown machine at my uni gym is always taken.

these + lat pullovers w/ DBs = big ass wings

      bb rows are the best

      different exercises mo
lat pulldown focus more on the lats while rows distribute the weight more evenly through all the smaller muscles that give definition to your back

I think they work really well with pullups. Pullups hit the vertical plane, bb rows hit the horizontal plane. Doing just pullups would be like only doing shrugs to hit traps, you're missing a whole other range of motion that hits the middle and bottom portion of the muscle.

BB rows still do absolutely mog lat pulldowns and horizontal rows though, those meme machines are as useful as c**t crushers

Interesting, that begs the question, DB rows or BB rows? Or both?

Whatever you feel more comfortable with. It's easier for noobs to use dbs because you can stabilize yourself with a bench and hyperextend the motion like a lawnmower so you feel lats super easily. I use barbell because dbs over 75lb are obnoxiously bulky and shred my hands

I'm not a big fan of barbell rows. They are simultaneous a worse deadlift and a worse pullup.

Lat pulldowns are also worse than pullups.

Probably just up your frequency on pull-ups and do them weighted if you are not already.

It's all just scapular retraction, same muscles. Only really worth having one scapular retraction exercise.

so just do deadlifts and pullups ?

        Yes.

Ok then why not bb rows? Way easier to overload on. Or why even bother with tricep work? Bench press hits them just fine since they're both elbow extensions.

Bench press doesn't hit the shoulder extension part of the tricep.

Barbell rows don't hit anything the Pullup doesn't except maybe the spinal erectors.

there are other variables to consider outside of "it's the same muscle action"

some exercises are better suited to different rep ranges, loads, force curves, etc.
variety in these stimuli are a good thing

although, would be interested in hearing some alternatives/variances for back that aren't scapular retraction

        >Pullups hit the vertical plane, bb rows hit the horizontal plane.
this is a meme. it makes you difference which direction you are facing. all muscles do is contract or relax.

Do pullups instead. There's almost always an open bar somewhere in the gym

Could be better for people without proper chain strength but I hate the grips the awkward angle made holding it hard.

It's the best after hammering your low back so hard that you walk like an old man.
God I hate falling for 5x5 memes.

As you can see in the picture that is pulling up

And lat pull down pulls down

So do you want up or down muscle?

Most exercises have their place. Do the one you enjoy that hits the muscle.

I've been hitting a lot of Kroc rows lately, keen to see how more strict barbell rows feel when I come back to it

bb rows trash my back despite having 600ish pound deadlift. Pull ups + t bar row/smith machine row is what i do

Genetically, my lats are my worst point aesthetically. My shoulders aren't that broad, my core is thick and muscular, endomorph etc. Dense bones, short, lean but thick limbs, you get it. Rows helped get a V shape more than pulldowns ever would, and transfer to pulldowns more than vice versa. For the record, my back muscles are strong, just not pretty, but if anything's helped hypertrophy, it's barbell rows. Good form, something like 5x8 reps. It's worked better for me than even pullups.
