nope, persistance hunting is mostly a myth, along side "cavemen are carnivores". hunter-gatherers either walk long distances or sprint in short burst. ain't no one running marathons in paleolithic, if u ever tried running one, u would no why.

there is literally zero evidence from paleolithic hunter-gatherer societies. persistence hunting has only been observed in San hunters from the kalahari which was mythologized in "born to run" book by mcdougall

Persistence hunting was not common, and it makes no sense why you would hunt like that anyways. Humans would ambush or use traps. It's much easier to sit in a tree and throw a spear at an animal.

Ah yes, a bunch of prints of footprints from hundreds of thousands or millions of years ago show clear proof that persistance hunting was a common thing. Couldn't possibly be misinterpreted or overinterpreted based on the convictions of the individuals looking at them.

Well, no. The footprints don't show persistence hunting. However, persistence hunting is pretty much the only thing that fits for early homo.

what population and what specific region on the planet?

                There are a lot.
Laetoli shows australopithecines walked upright. That's before humans and persistence hunting. Australopithecines would've still been semi-arboreal, despite being perfectly bipedal. Though decidedly not as efficient runners as we are.
There are some in Australia that seems to show humans running at 23mph.

              >but smart enough to track animal for hours and hours
              Doesn't make sense
Because in persistence hunting the hardest part is tracking you know, the animal gets out of sight extremely quickly
Chimps actually hunt some monkeys that are faster and more agile than them. They do it by ambushing it, they surround the monkey in a clever way, some chimps scare it in the direction of other chimps who are waiting for it and catch it
This makes way more sense for humans to hunt like that than to run after an animal for hours and hours - what actually define us as a species is big brain not running forever

Wolves can't make spears but they can chase animals.
They can't match human endurance, but they understand the concept of chase.

                >the animal gets out of sight extremely quickly
On the open african savannah? Where are they hiding?

                > what actually define us as a species is big brain not running forever
                Well, shit.
Our brains are shrinking and we're too fat to run.
What will we define ourselves by now?

                >They can't match human endurance, but they understand the concept of chase.
Wolves actually beat human endurance in the cold enverioments. And they run extremely fast too for miles and miles completely mogging us
Horses too they are extremely endurant and run much faster than us. Even if we can technically run non-stop for longer they can get so much of a headstart that they have time to stop and rest and we're still far behind

                >On the open african savannah? Where are they hiding?
Miles away in the horizon. When that gazelle gets tired of running it'll be so far from you you won't be able to see it

                >What will we define ourselves by now?
Well by that logic we can't be defined by persistance hunting either, average modern man can't run a mile

Wolves and horses are faster than humans, but cannot maintain it. Humans have endurance.
Gazelles would overheat. You keep chase up. The hadza have been observed doing this!
                >Well by that logic we can't be defined by persistance hunting either, average modern man can't run a mile

                >Wolves and horses are faster than humans, but cannot maintain it. Humans have endurance.
Bro you're being simple. Ok we have more endurance, but wolves and horses are still extremely endurant and can run for hours too
Combine that with their speed advantage four legs and all, and they win

                >Gazelles would overheat. You keep chase up. The hadza have been observed doing this!
I've see the video. The guy had to chase it for hours and hours and he was tracking it because the gazelle went out of sight like I said in the previous post
If a primitive hominid that can't even build a simple spear was hunting in this way it wouldn't have the intelligence to track the animal either

You're being simple. Other animals are built for sprinting. Humans are built for endurance.
We can keep up the chase for hours. A gazelle would collapse from exhaustion if it tried to maintain speed for an hour. It'll collapse after half an hour!

                >If a primitive hominid that can't even build a simple spear was hunting in this way it wouldn't have the intelligence to track the animal either
It had the intelligence to figure out the achulean handaxes.
                Way more complicated than
