How do you train toughness? And I dont mean looking like a bad ass.

How do you train toughness? And I don’t mean “looking like a bad ass”. I mean hardiness, physical and mental fortitude. Ability to withstand pain, discomfort, and other not ideal situations. Think navy seals in training or Vietcong living in the jungle and eating bugs.

How do you increase your hardiness in this way? I feel like although I have muscle I’m not very tough. I wouldn’t survive if dropped in the middle of the woods.

    Just be uncomfortable.

But how? What’s an example of a way you would make yourself uncomfortable to train your resiliency

Not the anon you're replying to but think of it like this. What's uncomfortable for you may be the easiest thing for someone else. Find what makes you feel that way personally, and do it whatever it may be. Make it a habit to throw yourself into such suffering, no matter how often you fail at that

Get a hard job. Experience actual hardship. Get screamed at multiple times daily, mostly because those higher up can without consequence. Experience injustice. Experience pain without reason.

Come back only when you've achieved the above. Leave me alone.

This is an exceedingly simple thing to figure out yourself, dipshit.

Life makes you tough naturally but for you westerners living fruity lives you can - go for a jog and just keep running, take cold showers when it's cold outside, follow a strict diet, fast etc

That’s the thing. I do live a comfortable western lifestyle. I want to be raw and unstoppable but I avoid (uncontrolled) discomfort naturally.

Stop fantasising suffering. It is not cool and neither is it fun. But you will only realise this once you go through it. For that, get off this board and make the most of your life - pursue a passion, study, work hard and stay disciplined. You will never be as "tough" as a soldier or a third worlder trying to break out of mediocrity but maybe that's not a bad thing.

I did USMC boot and MCT in 2008. It's not particularly tough despite both being harder than other branch's boot camps. Honestly, high level high school football practices in states like Texas is probably significantly more physically challenging. The military really only gets "tough" with infantry or SF specific training.

Do stuff that sucks for you. Not stupid suck, but mentally challenging.

High rep squats/deadlifts if you can avoid injuring your back. No one enjoys intense conditioning work i.e. hill sprints, 200-400m springs, weighted carries, etc. Also, throw in some long distance stuff. Maybe running, but hiking works. Delta used to, and probably still does, 40 mile rucks for time with a 40lb pack. If you have a good pack, 100lbs~ (existence load) for 10-15 miles would be a good goal to work towards.

Stop wearing shoes, go everywhere bare foot.
Spend time out doors, especially in funky weather.
Wait for it to start raining. Take this time to go run 3 miles. Do it bare foot and shirtless, pussy.
Go places and start shit talking strangers. Get in fights, get fricked up, walk it off.
100 degree weather in the summer and blazing sun? Go run.
0 degree weather in the winter and blizzard warning? Go run.
Join a boxing gym, volunteer to be a punching bag (spar) with the biggest mother frickers you find there.

Just find shit that fricks you up and do it anyway.

Muscle is not good for prolonged survival. Muscle is good for short term tasks that require lots of strength and power, but you want a lot of endurance and patience in a survival scenario and muscle eats up a lot of energy, is extra weight, takes more water.

You don't really train toughness, you train resourcefulness. If you were dropped in an concrete jungle homeless you'd survive differently than being dropped in the Yukon which would also be different from being dropped in Appalachia, Queensland, or Louisiana wetlands. As a human you are softer than your environment so you need to devise tools and shelter and heat. A lot of that is having the first principles knowledge and experience (firestarting, trapping, whittling, tree falling, foraging, bowmaking, weatherproofing, pathing/routing etc etc etc).

For me, I've been tarp/improvised camping for a long time, never been a scout or anything. These days I go alone, practice sometimes working out trap toggles or something when I'm fidgeting after some youtube. However, I've been in some scary scenarios like intense cold, animal encounters, or not being able to start a fire or a wound in very remote locations - resilience comes from your fear of death, sometimes you have to be acquainted with it to build it.

Every sunday I bash my chest with my fists, bash all sides of my head into the wall, hit softer parts of my upper leg with a shotput ball, bash my fists into the wall, punch my face, bash my knee onto the wall, hit my shins with a steel bar, bash my shoulders, biceps, abs, obliques and ribs in with my fist once I feel like I can't take anymore I stop, rest for one minute and go again four more times, one other days after cardio I'll do tuck jumps and push my legs downward midair so once I hit the ground my feet has to absorb more impact so my joints can be more prepared to fall from a height such as 10-25 feet
