I do not believe because my mom and dad told me to, or because of some charismatic preacher. I believe because i have witnessed first hand the might of God acting in my life, in direct proportion to my faith in Him.
We all have a void in us, we aim to fill it with all sorts of delights and disciplines. Lifting, family, career, drugs and so on. Some of these things can even be good in and of themselves, but they are no replacement for what is best.
We seek and seek because deeply and intuitively, we all feel that something is missing, "tfw no gf, tfw no 1/2/3/4, i finally got the job and the house, why is the cup of my heart still empty?.."
Remember anon, religion is the practice, the pharisees who spat on Christ had much religion. They kept much of the Law, they wore the proper clothes, said the right mantras, but their hearts were hard. They prayed openly, so others might see their "holiness" and be mogged, the give to the poor and delight in the attention they get for it. This is religion.
Christ Jesus teaches us to be humble like He was humble. In Christ you will find that there is such joy in the service to the widow and the forgotten man and the orphan.
He is the antithesis of the world, He put us before Himself even though we are so greatly His inferiors, He sought not wealth or moggings or fame or vengeance although all were available to Him at any moment.
Through the Lord you will begin to understand that he who gives up his life for another's sake will gain it, and he who selfishly holds onto it, looking out for himself will lose it.
We are made according to the blueprint of God, and our constant feeling of "something is missing/off" is due to our fallen state and behavior.

Meditate on the scriptures daily, i recommend a chapter in the morning, and one in the evening at least, just beginning at the start of the New Testament. Listen to Billy Graham and Charles Spurgeon sermons on youtube whenever you get 30 minutes, especially at first.
The more you lean into God, the more God will lean into you. No half measures of "i said the prayer and am trying and its not working", my first question to this is "how much time have you been spending in the Word?" If you come, you gotta be all in. Put in pebbles and you get pebbles.
Dont get me wrong, positive thoughts will come, but they, like the peace and joy that come from true fellowship with the Lord, spring forth as a result of your faith in leaning only on Him. God wants you to enjoy the things of life as long as they result in good and holy fruit and honor Him. For example, i lift and find that my spirit does better when my body is doing better, honor God in everything and get to know who Christ is for yourself by reading the New Testament, dont let the naysayers tell you.

Surround yourself with souvenirs from your crimes to remember your victims by then you never feel alone.
