How is it possible, biologically speaking, to lay down with your eyes closed for 2+ hours, no screens or loud noises, comfortable temperature, and yet still not fall asleep? Is there a scientific explanation for this?

Well, as with anything regarding biology, there isn't a simple explanation. It could be that you're a coomerposting homosexual or that you're simply not tired.

Sleeping is difficult so we don't abuse it for pleasure, for some people the difficulty level is set too high.

      Tldr

There's a biological root to being horny and a night owl perhaps.

Having sex all night keeps you warm. And when you're like...dream sexxing....figure it out.

That means you simply haven't done enough today. I literally can't remember the last time it took me more than 3 minutes to fall asleep.

Is there a problem bothering you, OP?
An example from my side the other day:
    >22:45
    >reading a book on the bed, the lecture is heavy and complex
    >lifted that day and was tired (this helps a lot) >I know I'm done for the day
    >put the book on the night table and start closing my eyes,
    >sudden thinking about being myself unemployed at this moment started to circle around my head
    >cannot stop it
    >02:25.....I pick the book back in order to make it
    I think I fell asleep after 3am.

I have this too, could barely sleep whitout watching a video while in bed for the past years.
Turns out my back is kinda messed up and im constantly stressed out (didnt even notice anything), it gets better now because i do a lot of deadhangs.
Also, if its a stress issue on your side OP then try drinking a calming tea before bed, it really helps.

cure to my decades long insomnia (running thoughts, concerned about my future):
    melatonin, 2mg, 30min before bedtime
    a playlist of interesting podcasts
    bodyscan until I fall asleep

I can be depressed, angry, concerned about nothing being solved, watch tv and browse IST until bedtime and fall asleep.

I have always been kind of a shitty sleeper. Been to a sleep doctor, tried different suplements, did "sleep hygiene", all of that stuff. Nothing really worked. A couple of years ago, my wife and I went on a "vacation" that involved us bushwacking through unexplored forests for 14 hours a day. It was not in any way relaxing or even fun. While I was on that trip I would fall asleep within seconds of getting in my tent and then sleep like a corpse for 8 hours a night. What was interesting is that even after we got back home to our comfortable lives my sleep was still pretty good for a while. So maybe we all need to stop being weak and soft and go suffer in the forest for a while to earn a good night of sleep.

It goes beyond exercise though. I don't sleep well no matter how burned out I get. I honestly believe time in nature is what we all need. Indoor drywall and carpeting cubes are killing us.

There was certainly an element of mental exhaustion when I was on that trip. We were sort of uncertain of anything we were doing and trying to figure out what the hell we were do to get out of the situation we were in. That combined with the physical exhaustion of carrying 80lbs of gear through thick jungle all day was one of the most exhausting things I've ever done.

    Breathing issues.
If your lungs aren't getting adequate airflow, your brain doesn't enter deeper sleep states like REM. I know septum issues can cause this, there's probably more potential causes.

besides all of the health stuff which does make a difference, most sleep disorders come from the anxiety of not being able to sleep.
most likely you are getting more sleep than you think.
even if you are not, simply resting in bed has shown to be extremely beneficial.
    I recommend pic related book.

      >most sleep disorders come from the anxiety of not being able to sleep.
You can definitely improve sleep quality by forcing yourself not to care if you get any sleep. I did it. However this absolutely did not fix my sleep disorder. It merely improved sleep onset a bit. Hard to blame stress about not sleeping on people when they're wake up FROM SLEEP constantly.

Sleep requires the mind to relax, but relaxation and sleep are both bad from an evolutinary standpoint if some threat exists. When you go to bed stressed out or obsessing over some concern, your mind default to "there must be a threat like a mountain lion nearby, therefore i'm not going to sleep because that would make me vulnerable" mode.

Post tricks to fall asleep? I tense parts of my body then focus on the feeling of them relaxing. I normally fall asleep before I've done my entire body

      >Post tricks to fall asleep?
      1. Put on podcast or music.
      2. flex and relax all muscles one by one.
      3. Ignore everything (including music and thoughts) and let your mind wander.
The last step is really fricking important. Focusing on anything will keep you awake. Never let your attention sit on one thing. Ignore the idiot fricks that tell you to focus on breathing, sheep counting, or anything that requires attention. You want the opposite. You want to unfocus. You want to blur. It may take a long time to get this part right at first.

I've been having sleeping trouble just like that since I can remember, maybe since I was 7-8 years old or so. I am now 30. I slept maybe 3 hours last nice and another 15 minutes after trying and failing to sleep for another 3 hours.

The doc says I have chronic sleep onset and maintenance insomnia. It's been over six years now since I've had a normal night of sleep. Though the sleep disorder started long before that. One thing I have learned is that focusing on anything will keep you awake all fricking night. Now I put on background noise like a podcast and actively ignore it and everything else. The key is to never focus on anything. Not even a chain of thoughts. Relax the body. I still have the sleep disorder and don't hit the right sleep cycles, so I am exhausted all the time. However, now I can get some rest and take naps with this method.

your mind refuses to let go. sleeping is the act of surrender or letting go - "falling" asleep. if you are thinking or concerned about something you will not be able to let go.

Also my answer to not being able to sleep well while younger was due to trauma based conditions where I would never relax despite there not being any threats around for an extended period of time so yeah.

It doesn't have to be anything negative tho, you can just be excited for something and not sleep.

I had serious insomnia a few years ago and took a 5 month trip to Colombia.

Now I no longer have insomnia.

    >not everyone can take a 5 month trip to Colombia!

I don't care. Figure it out.
