To go from 135lbs to 225lbs really shouldn’t take too long. 3-6 months seems about right regardless of weight.

      This. 5'10 180lbs at 19 years old. 1 month later I hit 245.

The problem with today's zoomers is they lift with absolutely no intensity and have the most moronic routines. Spend more time looking in the mirror than actually lifting

This just means you already had well developed chest muscles and basically just worked up to it.

What are you on about dude? Just lift and eat. It's literally that simple. My first session I could barely press the bar.

            Anonymous

Yeah im calling bull. Barely being able to lift the bar and going to 2 plate bench in under a year is ridiculous, let alone a few months. Let's say your benching twice a week, that's 24 times you bench if it's during a 3 month span. Going from 45lbs to 225lbs. Increasing on average 7.5lbs per session is more than 5x5 training which is supposed to be one of the most effective way to gain muscle. Stop lying.

Barely a bar is probably hyperbole, but 6 months to 135 and another 6 months to 225 is easy. Benching only 2 times a week is part of your problem.

                >flat benching 3x a week

moronic, unless you mean to incorporate other movements under that umbrella. You should be hitting decline, incline, flat at least 5 times overall per week if you’re really trying to build chest and tris but flat bench alone shouldn’t be repeated more than twice a week.

I just started last month (Starting Strength) and I’m already feeling it with only 100 lbs right now kek

I have little upper body strength and when I hit 145 lbs (100 on the bar) I think I’ll feel good about myself, it’s my goal right now. Only benching once or twice a week with SS though.

Body weight does massively influence it, a 270lb max/for a few reps at 240lb is slightly above average for a non lifter but not really that crazy.

I got to 60kg OHP quite quick because I hit shoulders three times a week. 2pl8 bench took a while, struggled with that the most.

      Anonymous

1 pl8 is a lot easier than a 2 pl8 bench for everyone but a 2 pl8 ohp is drastically more difficult than a 315 bench for everyone

        Anonymous

This is true but how is it possible? Is it because OHP has something to do with body mass and your body weight doesn't keep increasing proportionately?

I did 1pl8 OHP on my first try ever but had to train for a while before doing 2pl8 bench.

I hit 2pl8 bench well before I got 1pl8 OHP. I stalled between 50-55kg for fricking forever.

It took me about 6 months of serious lifting to reach it. I was in high school football and my first ever max was 180 as a junior, and a lot of freshmen and sophomores were getting 225 so I had to up my game. Ending up benching 275 at 168lb body weight my senior year.

2 plate bench is a lot harder. I remember also in high school we were doing clean and jerks and I did 115. I cleaned it correctly but didn’t jerk the weight, I pressed it and was told I did the lift wrong. Any ways the point is I did a 115 press with out ever pressing previously at 155lb weight.

      Anonymous

well im 115 lbs ohp with 135 lbs bench so id say bench.

i hope to get 1 plate ohp by christmas

      Anonymous

Both are really easy but ohp is a lot easier

1 pl8 is a lot easier than a 2 pl8 bench for everyone but a 2 pl8 ohp is drastically more difficult than a 315 bench for everyone

This is true but how is it possible? Is it because OHP has something to do with body mass and your body weight doesn't keep increasing proportionately?

This happens because most morons stick to a linear progression instead of doing a more effective program with more volume.
Conjugate and assistance exercises are the most effective after a linear progression stops working.

about 2 years. Bench is a weird lift where you can plateau for months if you don't really push yourself / rest enough

this only apply if you want to stay at a low bf. Fatties can bubble bench a lot

      Anonymous

The road to 225 was a year long starting from untrained and I felt like I was at a plateau. After I hit 225 I got really into technique and strength training when I built my home gym and am up to 335 7 months later.

  18. 2 years ago

It depends on your body weight and whether you've committed to doing the exercise regularly and in a progressive manner that makes sense. A lot of Anons will frick around and not do the exercise regularly, or they'll do their working sets at a lower weight than they should, or they'll try to substitute something like dumb bell press and wonder why it doesn't translate into a heavy bench press. To get good at the exercise you need to do it every 3-4 days, do it at a reasonably heavy weight (3 rep sets), eat lots of protein, and do other exercises that assist with bench press.

In terms of the time periods where I was seriously attempting to get better at bench press, it took me maybe 4-5 months from my baseline ability of 185lbs to 225lbs, then about 6 months to get from that to 315lbs.

One tip that helped me when I hit a plateau around 275lbs was implementing weighted pull ups as part of my routine. The muscle groups you hit with that exercise will help you stabilize the bar during the bench press, and should be done as an ancillary exercise along with things like triceps work.

      >I don't feel it in my pecs
      >So I'm going to drop this exercise instead of fixing my form
      >I'm a dyel btw
      Yeah we can tell.
      To bench properly do
-hand placement 2-3 fist wider than shoulder width, if you have longer arms just go wider.
-bar path goes diagonally from shoulder height to touching your sternum
      -retract and depress your scapula
-feet behind your knees, if you did this and the previous step correctly a natural back arch will be created without needing you to do anything else.
-when you grip the bar your elbows must be externally rotated as if you are trying to bend the bar.
-try slide down your hands to the middle of the bar, obviously you won't be able to but these activate your shoulders, just be careful that your elbows don't cave in.
I guarantee that you are doing something of these wrong and I bet you will also say that you done all of these despite obviously not getting the result you should.

I have been going to the gym for like 4 years now and my highest bench is 200 x 1rm. I deadlift 315+ squat 325+ but bench is tough for me and my shoulder is always getting wrecked

I don't doubt for a moment that some 6ft+ 200BW people have benched 225 with ease or barely working up to it, also fatties can bench with ease, but most of this thread are liars because most of IST doesn't even go to the gym
