lol I use the sidewalks and make the peds move. Not gonna stop until they deport every mexican yard worker, because they hitch those awful trailers to their trucks and leave tools hanging out to snag you.

Cars cross sidewalks at driveways and intersections and most drivers don't stop before getting on top of them. The only times I've ever been hit by a car or seen someone I know get hit by a car were when I or they rode a bike on the sidewalk and got smashed into by someone coming out of a parking lot and not looking or slowing down before approaching the sidewalk. Literally never been hit by a car in 20 years of actual road riding, though. The road is the safest place to be.

cycle gay here, it’s less about the miles and more about the length of the ride. don’t worry too much about how fast you are going and just try to maintain a somewhat challenging pace as long as you can. find a nice paved trail by you and stay off the roads if you’re new. if you live in an area with good mtb trails that helps you do more imo because it’s way more fun, just don’t try to jump right away or you WILL frick your shit up. always wear a helmet and don’t let road bike gays get to your head, most of them are chill but I’ve met plenty who were just as obnoxious as they look

how long does it take you to do 40 miles? I did 30 the other day which is the most I've ever done and it took 2 hours
I'm mostly just scared of my chain snapping mid ride and having to spend 6 hours walking home

If you're going on a long ride, there's no reason not to bring a kit for repairs. An extra chain, a couple extra spokes, spare tubes and/or patch kit, a multitool. Always be prepared.

          Anonymous

yeah maybe i should get an extra chain
rn i just bring a couple of spare choobs, a pump and some tyre levers
I already have the chain tool from when I used to ride bmx

have you ever had a chain/spokes break on you mid ride?

            Anonymous

I've never had a chain break on me, but I did have a spoke break once while 40 miles from home. I tried to turn around and ride slowly but another spoke popped and I had to call someone to pick me up. It was pretty embarrassing. I learned my lesson from that and now I'm prepared to fix anything fragile when I go on long rides. I also keep on top of maintenance more in the first place, which helps as well.

I tested my MTB going up the Selvino climb. Nothing happened.
3 days later i climbed a 4% for 2 km and my chain snapped instantly.

I learned my lesson and have quiklinks since than. And a crankbrothers n19 multitool with a chain tool.

Spokes: you should check your spokes from time to time. The only spokes i broke were on a city bike, and i completely re-trued that wheel because i suspect it was factory defective (not dished).

If you weight a lot (i weight 110kg) you should consider only running wheels below 650b and with a DECENT amount of spokes.

Unfortunately since the down of diskbrakes, nobody care about his spokes anymore.

Chains don’t break unless they are extremely poorly maintained or you shift shitty under load. Most likely failures on a bike of your vintage will be tires/rim strip/tube failure from puncture or otherwise, get those replaced and cables and housing replaced. Everything else will likely hold up for good miles. I’d be more worried about blowing a freehub body or something.

Black person I ride 25km every single day on a crusty €20 bike I bought from a hobo. Chains never break and spokes only go if you park it and some drunk moron has a go at it.

One day you're going to end up stranded. Thankfully you don't bike very far and probably don't leave the city so you'll probably be fine catching a bus or calling a cab. It's much different when you're 40 miles out in a literal cornfield and the nearest town is a 2 hour walk away and something breaks.

            Anonymous

Realistically you probably only need a few spare links and a chain tool, yeah. Extra weight is just extra gains anyway, though.

          Define long ride.
Anything below 150km not in the desert:

          >extra chain
What? A chain tool and a couple quicklinks will brink you home unless you end up with your bike under a train.
          >extra spokes
WHAT? If your rear wheel brakes some spokes, you need to remove the freehubcasette. Are you out of your mind? If you brake 1, 2, 3, 4 spokes you just get back home. If you have less than 28 spokes on a wheel: you are a complete moron. If you have less than 32 you should reconsider your life choice or you should run a 26 inch wheel and nothing more.
          >tubes
if you need more than 1 tube you probably should run tubeless anyway.

I've only had a chain break twice in riding 40,000 plus miles; once on a hire bike, once on my own. Both times were the result of a messy gear change that snarled the chain.

First time was a 10 mile walk in hot sun; second, years later and more competent in bike maintenance, was a case of having slipped the quick-release link in the snarl, and just needing to rethread the chain and clip it back together, and finish the ride home with filthy greasy hands.

Bro I biked from Denver to New York City on a Schwinn Trailway doing 40+ miles a day every day and the chain never snapped. If you aren't applying sudden force or straining it by using too low of of gear it will last until the sun dies out.

Well, those that treat it that way do look like that. They only cycle from may-august. Often just once or twice a week. And everytime to stop at some pub and drink beers.

Actual cyclist don't look like that.

Biking is superior to running because it's better for your joints. You can also cover more distance which keeps it more interesting so you do it more often. Adjusting the resistance is better because you can shift gears and make a hill climb as tough as you like
