Like 2 and they're both fat. I used to do it when I trained in a gym that was basically all barbells but when I swapped I switched to dumbbells because the barbell was about to rip my pec off.

That subtle flex but every powerlifting gym I go to is overpriced bullshit to train with the owner's garage equipment. A texas power bar is not that expensive. My old gym didn't even have a shower.

Not many. Maybe 5-10% of the men at my gym push 225 or greater. Admittedly,
I can only do one set of five repetitions at 225 lbs. at 170 lbs. body weight so I don’t have much space to talk.

      Anonymous

      >one set of five repetitions at 225 lbs. at 170 lbs
same as me. The moment I switched to commercial gym I rarely see anybody push for more than 240 lbs. Tho it does happen, for most of the people it seems to be the "elite" level

      Anonymous

That’s pretty good though. You’re just comparing yourself to a really high standard. I can do 225 for 3 reps also at 170lbs. I feel like if you can bench 1.5x your body weight for 1 rep you’re pretty good at lifting weights.

I find that very hard to believe, based on what I've seen people lifting at every single gym I've ever been to. I'd put the average at more like 60kg (132lbs). And that's for people Id seen regularly at the gym. Non lifters are likely far weaker unless they're someone getting strength training from their sport or job. I have a feeling strengthlevels is more generally full of shit and just gathers its stats from what people type into the search. If I'm there typing in hypothetical 1rms I'd say it counts it as someone actually staying they lift that much.

So category 3 is the average? As in, for a 200lb man who lifts, a 1rm of 213 is the average?

                Anonymous

This is according to Ripplebreasts. He rates the categories based on beginner, novice and anything after category 3 being competitive in that weight class at a regular meet. Sounds about right. Maybe a little underestimated. The internet skews data and can't be trusted based on user input. Seeing life long devoted strength athletes break records doesn't reflect what anyone can expect to accomplish with proper training and diet. I think the given numbers are decent.

                Anonymous

Yeah it makes more sense than the strengthlevels stats anyway. I've no issue with dividing the lifts into different categories, but to claim 217 as the average for a male lifter - even among those who weighs 200lbs - is just demonstrably not true.

Nah I tend to agree with that anon, from what I've seen in the gyms I've been to most people are actually weak as frick, and most of the strong people are on roids or have been training for a long time. Looking at that site, someone even called out the strength standards here https://exrx.net/Questions/StrengthTests (see "Questioning Norms"). On that same page the author mentions that body composition isn't considered in the standards at all. Consider that in 2023 most Americans are overweight or obese. Also note that these standards are derived from "nearly 70 years of accumulated performance data", i.e. most of that data is coming from a period of time when people were less sedentary and less fat. And even if we ignore all of those caveats, if those numbers are averages/medians then half of people still wouldn't be able hit those numbers.

How many of you guys see people deadlift 3pl8+ in your gym?

According to IST this is something most people can do after ~3-6 months of lifting, but I've been to a lot of gyms now (I move around a lot) and I very rarely see anyone pulling 3pl8+ unless I'm training in a powerlifting or strongman gym.

Most people just go to the gym to get slight exercise and fill the day with something, not everyone is le epic tryhard rippetoe enthusiast you see on IST. If you bench one pl8 you're already 80% better than the rest of the male population (assuming you're not 200lbs or anything)

Most cannot actually. I go to a YMCA

Same YMCA anon here. I don't even see most bother deadlifting in the gym. I usually go before 12pm but even after 12 the few times I go I don't really see people bother to do the lift at all. I can DL 3pl8. Of course some of the big guys there can although I never see them do the exercise. I'm going to just chalk it up to I somehow never see them do it is all. I am honestly probably the only guy who routinely does heavy weighted dips at my gym. I've done 4pl8 before and the last time I recall ever seeing that was so long ago from a couple guys I knew that used to go there.

i did 1 year of dips and pullups prior. first time i pulled 160-170kg without training it. at first i didn't know how to brace and would hurt my back every time so i actually didn't even train it much for that period until about the last few months i did a dirty bulk of 10kg which exploded my deadlift from 180-185kg to +220kg

I deadlifted lmao3plate for reps after 3 months.
Just because you don't see anyone doing it doesn't mean it's hard to achieve with dedication. The discrepancy you're seeing is because most people DON'T have dedication, or simply aren't bothering to train deadlift seriously or don't have the goal of getting a stronger deadlift.

No one deadlifts is why. It's the same at my gym, 0 people do it except me. One time I was deadlifting and one of my friends came over and wanted to try it. I had 315 on the bar and he had never deadlifted before afaik. He did 5 reps conventional like it was nothing then laid down on the floor on his back for like 10 minutes then left. It was impressed since it took me like 9 months to reach that. Granted he was heavier than me and not out of shape but he wasn't huge either maybe 5'10 and 175lb normie mode

      >How many of you guys see people deadlift 3pl8+ in your gym?
There are a couple obvious roiders that can pull 5-6 plates, as well as the group of about five powerlifting turbo manlets that pull around 4-5 plates (albeit with straps and belts). Anyone who looks kind of normal besides myself maxes out at just over 3 plate
      >According to IST this is something most people can do after ~3-6 months of lifting
I actually surpassed it in about 2.5 months of training diddies. I do around 365 for reps (5x5 was my best dating back to 4 years ago)

i always wonder how much weight powerlifters would actually lift if they didn't use super optimized form and only ever maxed out when they're peaked
like i see jacked bodybuilders repping out 315 on a no arch close grip bench press, and then is see powerlifters half their size who press more weight but it's for fewer reps and the form is gay
it makes me curious about how strong powerlifters would be if they trained like bodybuilders for a year or two, their 1rms are so optimal that i barely even consider them strength feats any more

Idk I only look at women's asses when at the gym.

This. And all the asses worth looking at are at most 16. There's one MILF that's been going there and she's short but is super cheeked up. There's some short Asian girl with an okay one, and then I followed some chick into the gym the other night who I had a while to check out before going in. Hers wasn't bad at all, I honestly considered raping her. I think I can get away with being creepy though because I'm halfway okay looking and in my early 20's + fit.

okay here is a better one, how many people in your gym under 200lbs can bench 225 or heavier?

okay, heres another one, how many people do you see in your gym benching 80lb dumbbells or more? seems like DB bench is harder or something because I rarely see people bench more than like 70s

I have seen two men besides me bench press 225 or more in the 3 months I have been at this one. I spotted one of them when he ORM’d 315.

I saw a dude bench 405. He's like 5'10 and really fat, but it was impressive

Took me 4 months to go from 1 plate to 2 plates of 8-10 reps.

Not sure why this particular weight is helped so highly. It just comes as long as you actually go the train consistantly.

I'll say it, the bench(dumbbell) does nothing for natty lifters.

I've seen maybe 4-5, they hard cap at 255-275. Most recent was a decent looking stocky guy on gear put up 295 for a hard max. I saw him yesterday and benched 315x10, which was my absolute max, he packed his stuff and left. There's a black dude that compliments my lifts every time I see him. He warms up with 135 then adds a 10 every set and maxes at 235. It's kind of funny to see.

    >Do 2 x 14 kg dumbbell presses for reps
Wait, am I weak? You motherfrickers are benching over 100kg?

14kg is just beyond beginner level. How long have you been lifting for?

If it's longer than a month or two, you need to start adding weight to your lifts bro. Progressive overload is your friend.
