I am 2 weeks into a sober trial run. I don't have an end goal with this experiment, and I am debating if I should just quit for good.

      >dont be a quitter.
      as in don't quit alcohol?

        Anonymous

Quit for good. Don't be a crazy person about it, just be mindful.
I'm an alcoholic and there is nothing redeeming about alcohol. All of the sexy advertising is incredibly alluring and some of the most effective. Everyone imagines a 1950's man drinking bourbon, or a happy-go-lucky bum of a confident man chugging back rum runners, or a testosterone fueled dwarf drinking beer after a hard day's work, Bojack as a stand-in for your depressed you, etc etc.
It's VERY effective. But the reality is: drunk people are sloppy and disgusting. You don't look like don draper, you look like the sweaty, hazy-eyed, word slurring mess of your father/uncle/that homeless guy down the road. Only drunk people like other drunk people. Ever been the only one sober at a party of drunk people? Try it sometime. It's goddamn offputting.
        End of story.
I drank in college every weekend, it was wonderful. I kept drinking after college, it turned into hell. My mid 20s were mostly lost to drinking.
I just ticked 30, and life is infinitely better now that I "stopped". I'll drink a beer here and there, but I'm VERY purposeful about it. Every now and then I slip up, and I wake up feeling like dogshit (there's a point in your life where hangovers become infinitely worse just due to aging. I used to blackout at 2am, then get up at 8am and cut down trees all day for an eco project in the florida sun, no problem at all. Now it fricks me over for 1.5 days straight if I just get normal drunk).
Alcohol ruins sleep and literally inhibits muscle production during the muscle-rebuilding phase of your rest days. It costs more money than it's worth. I consider myself having quit alcohol, and maybe I'm just wired weird but as long as I don't make sobriety a huge deal, I mostly stick to it. If I focus on it, I become obsessed thinking about alcohol all the time, and end up slipping up waaaay more.
Don't become a monk, but say no more often than "why not?", you will thank yourself.

I used to take time off but I’ve been drinking daily for about two years now. I can easily crush at least 8 beers OR 4-5 double vodka clubs in a night, sometimes worse sometimes less. Wish I could stop but I don’t know if I’ll have withdrawals or not. Shit is miserable, truly. I’m 33 don’t be like me younger anons

This hits close to home for anyone who fell for the alcohol meme, and it’s so damn true. Beyond early drinking years, even if you manage to be a player, it will end and booze will consume your life and no woman wants that unless she herself is a fricking alcoholic train wreck.

See if you can get a prescription for a course of the inhibitor drugs, though it might take a 3 day inpatient stay to complete a treatment course. Having done that, it's completely worth it. I got really bad but after that initial treatment and some willpower I haven't had any issues.

It's not even weird for people not to drink as there are many legitimate reasons why someone might not drink including health problems, medication interactions, ex-alcoholic, etc. And if you peer group pressures you to drink anyway you need to find new friends because these people will cheer you into a ditch.

Bro I drink at work all the time and no one can ever tell. I think liquor effects people differently. When I drink the worse that'll happen is I'll tend to talk slightly more. That's it. Now if you're blacked out every other day it's a problem. But if you can actually control your drinking and how you act drunk then I don't see the issue. Other than how it effects your health. Personally I can take a shot or two and run 2 miles easy. So idk

You still drink very often. At work. You have a problem, but you’ve deluded yourself into thinking you don’t. Alcohol is poison and any form if regular consumption will have long term consequences. This literally isn’t moderation. Let’s stick to definitions that are agreed on boozebrain.

I try to avoid alcohol entirely because it blocks progress with meditation. But I don't do very well. I'm not drinking this weekend but the last couple of months I've had alcohol 1-3 times a week, almost every week.

It seems to be based on interpersonal stress from work. I can handle time pressure and a heavy workload but if I have a bad supervisor and I'm in meetings where she's constantly embarrassing the section and I'm biting my tongue while still trying to provide good advice...it exhausts me in a way that seems to generate this huge thirst for alcohol, almost like I have to use alcohol to rinse off the stench of other people.

I used to have a problem drinking. I still don't drink very often, but I may have one or two beers with friends on occasion but only around friends I know aren't heavy drinkers. It's easy for someone like me to get sucked back into being a degenerate and throw away all my mental and physical gains. Overall, I try to limit this though, no more than once a month and ideally no more than once every 2-3 months. I feel better not drinking at all, my mood is far more stable, and my health is far better.

The liquid israelite isn't worth it OP. But I will give you small advice. During your sober time don't think "wow almost done with this and I can drink again!" You need to spend this time mindfully and deliberately face the demons that made you start drink in the first place. If you conquer those demons your sober run was successfully. Otherwise, you're just an alcoholic with a dry spell.

Alcohol is one of the worst things you can ever put into your body. It's fricking poison.

Haven't had a drop in over 8 years, once I figured out what alcohol was it wasn't even a matter of going sober or quitting it, I didn't even remotely want another molecule of that shit in my body, ever.

I don't drink. I drank a little when I was in college, and gave it up when I realised how much weed I could buy for that money. Now I've stopped drugs too, except for some acid a year or so ago. Meditation is all the mind expansion I need. It's like the OG consciousness alteration method. I see people dumbing down their wonderful minds and necking down empty calories all the time with alcohol and it just makes me pity them. I don't really think about it except when someone does something dumb or spends too much and I realise how lucky I am to have seen through the game. The liquid israelite has taken too many minds away from who they were meant to be. Feels good to be free, bros

I can see that line of thinking actually. When I've drunk a little alcohol when by myself I did it to enjoy a game more or the like, so that makes sense. But I feel like that type of thinking doesn't fit most people to begin with, since they can't handle being alone as it is.

Drinking enhances and uncovers whatever feelings you have buried deep. The people who can't stand being alone shouldn't drink alone because that'll just make them depressed. But when I drink alone it helps me unwind and makes whatever I'm doing way more fun. But I don't drink at all right now because I have some fitness goals I'm trying to achieve and drinking ruins my sleep.

I see what you're getting at, but I'm not sure I would put it that way. I think for a lot of people (particularly alcoholics), drinking actually obscures their true feelings and lets them escape
I think something like weed or psychedelics is better characterized as enhancing and uncovering deeper feelings

Some people are putting up a fake persona, the lowering of inhibitions draws out what they really feel. The angry drunk that is normally a nice guy is actually revealing how they view the world. Most people don't change too much when they're drunk because they are who they act as. But if you're someone dealing with unresolved feelings like anger or depression, getting drunk will let that out.

                Anonymous

I don't know, I've been told that I'm a fun drunk, but I engage in some behaviors when I'm drunk that I don't think define my true self.
For instance, when I'm drunk I'm much more likely to stare at a girl's ass or breasts. This is literally just because my inhibitions are lowered and there's less activity in my prefrontal cortex to limit those animalistic behaviors. Deep down, am I just a creep who loves staring at random girls' asses? I don't think so.
I think the inhibition of those desires when I'm sober is part of what defines me as a person.

Don't lie to me and tell me you wouldn't stare at a girl's breasts if you could get away with it. You describing it as "being a creep" shows you're showing that you're modifying behavior. ("Don't stare at boobs or you'll be called a creep.") Don't deny your sexuality as if it's not a part of your being, don't be ashamed for having a sex drive.

I don't think it comes from a place of not wanting to get caught or being perceived as a creep.
When I'm perfectly sober, I'm not denying my sex drive, I feel like it's a matter of invading privacy and objectifying women.
But when I'm drunk I don't have those principles, and all I can think about is that big juicy ass and how much I want to bury my face in it, with no concept of politeness.

                > Drinking enhances and uncovers whatever feelings you have buried deep.
My mother told me growing up that alcohol does one of two things. It reveals what you're feeling or doubles what you're currently feeling. Feels good to know people learned of these things as well.
I never truly drank alone I guess. When I was drinking at home, even if by myself in my room, I did still have people in the house if nothing else. Although, would you agree that drunkenness is different from having a few drinks? Because I've commented that taking a few drinks to get a buzz is not a crazy of a thing personally, but drunkenness is an actual complete change in state of mind. Forgive me if I sound all over the place, my dumbass has stayed up all night like a moron.

                Anonymous

I don't think getting buzzed is enough to drop your inhibitions, you have to get to the point where your brain is starting to lose control of your feelings. When I'm buzzed I'm still in complete control of what feelings I'm showing.

                Anonymous

Kind of what I am trying to get at I suppose. Getting buzzed by yourself is a pleasurable thing I see when you're by yourself. You can feel a little bit looser and enjoy yourself a little bit more. Meanwhile, getting drunk for the average person while alone is a chance to be completely soaked in their anxieties. People already take a lot of medicines and have problem as it is. It's one of the reasons one I'm questioning the pleasure for getting drunk alone. Since I've never heard tale of someone getting drunk alone and them enjoying it.

                >Since I've never heard tale of someone getting drunk alone and them enjoying it.
I don't know if it's because I'm not particularly depressed or anxious these days, but whenever I've gotten drunk alone I usually have a blast. I enjoy my own company, and being drunk just enhances the moment. I laugh harder at dumb shit, I have more fun playing games or watching shows, etc.
I haven't gotten properly drunk alone in quite some time though, because the consequences (hangover, worse sleep, fricked up gains, etc) aren't really worth it. Getting buzzed still enhances the moment to a lesser degree, but with significantly diminished consequences.

A long time ago if you were an butthole then people wouldn't share food with you so you died. We also developed self awareness so that we could better survive if we were cast out and had limited resources.

Eventually our brains created proper social responses to not be buttholes so that we get to participate in a group and get food and live.
As one drinks they lose those inhibitions. But first one loses self awareness so things that did matter no longer do and instead of being careful one becomes careless.

This creates a false sense of joy and euphoria because the stresses of modern society are always prevalent and incredibly powerful.

As the inhibitions continue to unravel one begins to lose the bit that is concerned with a group mentality. It is like becoming an animal. The complex human emotions become too hard to comprehend and the most powerful of them dominates the mind.
Usually, it is anger and hate which will own a mind in this state. Followed closely by selfishness, greed, lust and pettiness.

At this stage any small slight will cause an outburst as these unchecked emotions lead to all manner of negative outcomes.

The final stage is utter sadness and ineptitude. Being so drunk that one has zero control over themselves, physically and mentally, they are crushed under the weight of existence and cease to be.

Quit for good. Especially if you're interested in fitness. Alcohol doesn't trackwell with sleep regularity, bodyfat, fatigue and recovery, hormonal conditions that motivate muscle growth, it's the worst of the substances in terms of fitness yet the one our culture accepts.
I'm biased though, I became sober after alcohol addiction did a considerable number on my social life. I functioned well and it didn't correlate with school performance but the social consequences alone forced me to stop altogether. I actually started lifting and training and reforming my diet because sobriety gave me the opportunity, and it let me 'hedge' against going back to drinking because I couldn't drink the way I was and accomplish a bodyfat reduction to 8-10% or motivate myself to build muscle. Plus exercise substantially boosts my mental health. Without alcohol calorie tracking is actually possible and you don't get to make bullshit excuses as to why you're fat or not making progress. Highly rec a total quit for lifters

the frick? i was aware that alcohol fricks your sleep if you overdo it, but with 3 glasses of wine and 1 beer per week?
I drank again after that just to see what happens, and sure enough, I got insomnia the day after drinking again.
I haven't drank in a month now. Kinda miss it since other than the insomnia thing it didn't give me any problems, and i do like my hecking hoppy IPAs but oh well, sleep>beer

I remember reading some article or another in which technically, even one glass of wine every two weeks (or was it a month) was the recommended limit by a doctor. I never looked at the information that it was pulled from so it's not like I can feel assured at that, but it gives some perspective of how alcohol might do the one out of a hundred people out there.

Official guidelines get pulled out of asses. All cause mortality actually reaches a minimum at about 25 units (~12 pints beer) per week, and doesn't go above the teetotaller level until 60/week.

I've come to realize that as long as I value my health, I'll feel like a disgusting creep when I drink. But I'm also fricking lonely. So I go to bars to socialize but just end up drinking and getting angrier and angrier with myself and acting weirder and weirder. It's gotten to the point where I catch the female bartenders staring at me narrowly with that sort of fear/hatred thing women do when they think you're dangerous. I half heartedly tell myself that I'm going to bars to meet women, but that's a lie - I haven't had sex in over 3 years so it's not like I'm going to break my dry spell on some random Wednesday. And when I do pick up bar chicks I'm grossed out by them and can't get it up. I have this vivid memory of pumping my soft dick into some bar floozy and just staring into her idiot eyes and feeling emotionless, empty. Horrible feeling. Dunno where else to talk to people though, because I'm basically friendless. Kinda stuck.

Not much of a guy for a bar scene, but maybe you need another social outlet? I might be telling you things you already know, but it is a roll of the dice with bars as it when it comes to quality of people.

Thanks. I asked out a sweetheart girl I work with and she sort of laughed in my face and said no. But I actually felt better afterward. As far as her company specifically, I can take her or leave her. But just making that motion toward wholesome friendships with wholesome people felt good. Refreshing.

I am not the best version of myself, even as I sit here, but I do try to help people with my words as best as I can. I hope to maybe do it enough that I finally listen to my own words and advice. Take care of yourself anon. Thank you for thinking about me!

This is why the much-maligned but usually-correct PUA's tell incels to start by asking out every non-disgusting girl you encounter. If she says no you don't really care, and if she says yes she's not so gross that you dread a spending a date with her.

Go on meetup.com and see what meetups are going on in your area. Most of them will be gay as frick, but there might be some good ones. I joined a hiking group and a board game group in my town and made a few pretty good friends that way

I like alcohol and drank through most of my weight loss this year. I always quit at least a month twice a year (sober October and dry January). Hasnt ever caused me any problems except the cost maybe and obviously it can mess with yr sleep even at small amounts. If you can be moderate I think its ok and even healthy long term. If not, better to quit completely.

Like a shit ton. I'd go on 5 day benders drinking until I couldn't even sleep anymore because my brain was so wired. It was bad enough that I had a seizure and had to be taken to the hospital to get loaded on ativan twice in one day. I think when they drew my blood initially it was like 4-5x the limit.

I'm going on ten years without a drink this august, and I don't miss it at all. It's nice that there's this whole chunk of human existence that I just don't have to worry about at all. There are other, healthier, more rewarding ways to relax and socialize. Unless you are a connossieur or you're in some realm of business where social drinking really is a requirement, I think you'd be better off quitting completely.

      >My family also has plenty of alcoholics, so I don't want to test my luck with a new thing to get addicted to.
That's a smart move anon. As this thread suggests, many people can drink in moderation and be totally fine, but there is a strong genetic correlation with alcoholism. Some people are just born such that they are pre-disposed to alcoholism. Moderation does not work for these people.

For about 5 years I drank almost every night, to the point that I would pass out and not remember the last few things I was doing the night before. Recently had a FibroScan done as part of a study, result was F2 fibrosis, so I'm pretty much halfway to cirrhosis. Quit drinking completely for 2 months, now have a couple drinks on the weekend.

On most weekends I'll get through half a bottle of something 40%. I would like to taper that down because alcohol is poison but it's not a terrible amount. Drinking casually is awful and nobody should ever start: once you decide it's ok to have a beer or two on a weekday evening you're sliding down the slippery slope to alcoholism and I've watched it happen.

I buy a bottle of vodka every now and again, which lasts me about a week. And then I usually go a while without drinking, and then I'll buy another bottle of vodka, and repeat. Seems to be going well for me, I don't think it's having any negative impact on my health.

I don't understand alcohol addiction. I can have as much as I want without ever building a dependence. I can literally stop at any time and it never affects me whatsoever. There are times where I straight up forget to buy alcohol and go months without it. Other times it seems like I'm having 3 beers every day with dinner (and wine for dessert). I literally do not understand how a physical dependence on this stuff forms.

Am I just a genetic freak? What's going on here? Why do normies NEED to get drunk?

Zero alcohol. My only drug is kratom. I'm not pretending it isn't an addictive drug; it is. But it's about one notch up the harmful scale from caffeine IMO. Like with caffeine, when I take a break the first two days are unpleasant but that's about it.
