    A 72 hour fast will probably drop you 6-8 pounds if you’re a guy. 4-6 pounds if you’re a woman.

      do u mean "first couple days" as in the first couple days of a caloric deficit and that fat loss happens after several days of a caloric deficit or is there some other mechanism involved?

        Eating at a surplus, especially lots of carbs and sodium, will cause you to retain a lot of water. It will take up to a week of deficit to actually shed that excess water weight.
        It also takes several days of a deficit to deplete your excess glycogen stores. Your body won’t start using your fat storage for energy until this.
        When people start a deficit initially they will lose several pounds in the first 1-2 weeks because of these 2 things but they get discouraged once they actually start burning fat because fat loss is a lot slower than this.

          This is incorrect. Your body is constantly burning a mixture of fat and sugar for energy. The ratio varies according to your circadian rhythm, your diet, your physical activity, etc.
          In a clinically fasted state, low intensity aerobic exercise like walking is almost all beta oxidation of fatty acids.

      this is peak midwittery. your body can burn fat and glycogen at the same time- you don't have to be completely depleted to lose weight
      additionally, as you refill your glycogen reserves in the days-week after burning through them, your body will continue using fat as an energy source while refilling your glycogen reserves

      so if you burn 3500cal over 3 days, yes, you will end up netting a lb of fat loss if you don't overeat in the period following it.

    Realistically, maybe 1lb.
    Perhaps nearly 2lb if you eat zero food and do a lot of walking, but you'll also catabolise muscle.
