How much rest time is too much to leave between sets that it starts negatively impacting my gains? Sometimes I’ll end up scrolling on my phone for like 5 minutes between sets because I don’t religiously keep a set rhythm.

    Optimal rest time is like 10-15 minutes between sets but you get like 90% of the benefits resting at least 3 minutes. Anything beyond 15 minutes will negatively impact your gains. Also would but would NOT let her meet my mother

    First, are you training for strength of for hypertrophy?
    It is not a stupid question. If you're doing a strength routine like SS, SL or Mad Cow you can wait until feeling Ok for the next series (up to 10 min for some); if you're doing PPL or brosplit, 2,5 minutes is more than fine.

    Piece of advice: drop the phone. Use it for the music and set a resting time on your watch (or use the phone solely for that if you train without one).

    I do about 60 seconds, give or take a bit. I do bodybuilding and it keeps my intensity up and ensures I don't spend 1 1/2 hrs in the gym everyday.

    5 minutes is too long. 3 minutes at most. 2-3 minutes is ideal if you're lifting heavy. Less if you're lifting light.

    for heavy compound lifts, anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes of rest between working sets is fairly standard
    for accessory and isolation movements, I think 1 to 2 minutes is plenty.
    you should try not to mindlessly scroll on your phone when the gym is crowded tho, that isn't very courteous to your fellow gym-goers

    This is realistically never a problem. Its not possible to accidentally rest too much. Yeah we can theoretize that if you spend 30 minutes to an hour between the sets its a problem but if its 6 minutes, 7 minutes, 4 minutes, 9 minutes, it doesnt realistically make a difference.

    5 minutes is very solid and good rest time, maybe even "optimal".
