For my specific case, yes. It isn't getting infected, it's literally digging into the skin if I cut it short cause it's shaped like a crescent moon.

Just cut your fricking nails more often and don't cut short on the sides you smoothbrain

        >don’t cut short on the sides

Doesn’t work because it never gets long enough on the sides to need cutting anyways. It just always grows down into the skin and needs to be removed.

You could also kill the nail naturally. One time I dropped a heavy metal box on my toe and the nail just died and naturally fell off about a month later. Didn’t even hurt except for like… the whole dropping a 50 lbs box in your toe part.

I got my nails cut out
super simple procedure they can do.
You have to specifically demand it.
I was dealing with mine for many years and the trimming and all the shit didn't help and I was sick of it. So I just have the nail removed, and when my other nail became ingrown I immediately had the nail removed because I didn't want to frick with it.
But we're men, so it doesn't matter how ugly our feet are. It's pretty normal to be missing parts as a man.

This right here. You can do the procedure at home. You'll need a vise grips, a blowtorch, and a carpentry nail. Clamp the vise jaws on the tip of the toenail and yank it out. You may need to do this multiple times if the toenail breaks into fragments. Then, once the toenail is removed, heat the nail with the blowtorch until it's cherry-red. Then, jam it into the exposed nailbed and sear the flesh down in near the bone. I suggest biting a rolled-up towel during the procedure. good luck Anon.

It's a very small surgery that clips the ingrown part away from the sides and then burns the root to keep it from growing back. Removing the whole nail like is overkill in most cases, you should just the nail grow back long enough so it doesn't grow into your skin again.

Do not do this you will easily catch and infection and it will only get worse, other than it being extremely painful.

Go to a specialist to have them fixed. They use a local and cut out the piece that's stabbing you. The issue is they could come back. They did for me and I went in over 5 times to get them fixed.

Just get a matrixectomy or whatever it's called as your last resort. I got it done when i was 16 for both my big toes. You get put under and recovery is like a couple of weeks. They burn the matrix of your toe so a sliver of nail no longer is capable of growth. I'm 27 now and haven't had any issues with my toes whatsoever. God bless anon. The pain can be unbearable if untreated.

There is no reason to put you under for a surgery this small, you from the US?

What the actual frick is with all this moronic advice. This thread alone shows why people shouldn't be taking fitness advice from anyone here.

The actual solution: Go to the doctors and explain you're having issues with ingrown toenails. It's a very quick procedure. They will inject you with local anaesthetic on the toe. Cut down the side of the nail that get's ingrown and then use some sort of acid along the side to prevent nail from growing back there. I have had 2 removed and they've never been an issue again.

      Agreed

I've had this problem for a couple of years. Going to a doctor and cutting off the whole nail doesn't work, it just delays the issue until it grows back.

Get a pimple popper like in the pic (you can find one at target), bathe your feet in hot water mixed with salt and dettol for about 20 minutes - nail should be soft but not too soft preferably.

Then take the smaller end of the pimple popper and insert it just under your nail. Slide it down to the upper edge of the nail on the side that's irritated. Gently lift the side corner of the nail up and hold.

      Anonymous

      >(2/2)

I don't do this anymore but you can take a scrap of paper towel and use the pimple popper to push it under the edge of nail.

The main thing is to do this atleast twice a month until your nails are perfect. It's not as gross as you think btw.
      Good luck homie.

totally false. doctors solve this issue by chemically destroying the root of the nail bed. you have no idea what the frick you're talking about, so why say it?

      t. had nail bed destroyed on side of toenail on both big toes.

yeah, I always just lift the side that is starting to dig in with my fingers a couple of times a day when I get ingrown nails.
I bite my nails a lot and this gets rid of any ingrown problems, you might not even need this tool, good luck op!

      Anonymous

      >Going to a doctor and cutting off the whole nail doesn't work, it just delays the issue until it grows back.
Yeah that's why you have them cauterize the nail bed with chemicals. That's what I asked my doctor to do after he removed both my large toenails. They grew back but not at all like before and not at the sides because there is literally nothing to grow from now. Also they're not as well attached as before I had them removed and if I wanted I could pry them off pretty easily.

i had mine removed with a lazer like 15 years ago, never had a problem with it since. they basically make so that the most outer part of your nail (the one that cuts into the skin) doesn't grow anymore. it's a very quick procedure and doesn't hurt at all. nail looks normal.
    see a doc.

The procedures you see on YouTube they usually numb the site via injection and then cut off the ingrown part, and apply a buncha chemicals (phenol is what I hear the most) to kill nail cells from growing. My old doctor didn't wanna use phenol or any shit on me and just cut my nail without anesthesia. Hurt like a b***h. It obviously grew back and he ended up trying to wedge the inside nail out and that pain was truly unbearable. I remember just cussing in the car from all the pain. Flash forward a few months and now both toes on both sides are ingrown, went to a new doctor who actually knew his shit on this type of thing and got the procedure done. However, he was being stingy saying "all side were too much" so there's still one side on one toe that gets ingrown occasionally. I just clip it when it starts hurting and the pain is manageable.

And even then the first reaction will be to ask for help on a finnish sauna-building forum and rather resort to an equivalent of a voodoo shaman rain dancing procedure, where they will mutilate themselves

anon I’ve suffered your pain on both sides of my feet for almost 5 years now, here’s what you can do at home without major assistance, you have 2 options that I personally feel work consistently and easily:
1: (pic related) get under one side, pry it up and until the nail root is exposed, then pull the nail across and up until you remove the whole nail, this may vary in direction, just make sure you pull the whole nail out, once you’re done wash with soap and water under the complete nail bed, then wrap with gauze as precaution against infections. Ideally as it’s growing you take care by stuffing toilet paper into each inner side of the nail so it doesn’t grow INTO the toe. but you can leave as is and deal with it some 6 months later like me.

2: use a box cutter or razor blade to slowly score the nail of the ingrown side, do this very carefully as you DO NOT want to stab the nail bed it hurts a lot. do it consistently and slowly, eventually you can get underneath with a nail clipping scissors or tweezers to lift it up and out with less pain.

Dont listen to everyone else, here's what you actually do: whenever you have time to be sedentary for a bit, just get a large tupperware or something big enough to fit both of your feet, put some dish soap in is and then fill it up with water that as as hot as you can tolerate. Then soak your feet until the water cools down, at least 30 minutes minimum. I dont know why it works but it does.

Yup, that shit actually scarred me from needles. I had an ingrown nail happen on the other big toe a year later and I didn't see a doctor about it for two years cause I was anxious about the damn anesthetic needle again. Doc gave me an Ativan to calm my nerves before the procedure though, which helped a lot.

I had this problem on boths legs as I always cut my nail in a nice curve that followed my toe.

Stop that. Cut it in a straigth line, grow out the sides, 'put them above' your skin. I had problems with it for years but unless I kicked a furniture or broke my nail it was managable. With time my inflammed toes recovered and the nail now grows outward.

Grow it out, cut it in a straigth line only. Cut your toe nail rarely.

I just cut the skin with a scalpel so the nail could pass through to the other side OP.
Don't see what your problem is.

Cut them straight, then cut a V in the middle.
Supposedly causes it to grow in a manner that pull it out of the skin.
Not sure how, it's not like the V closes up, but it has always worked for me when I needed to fix an ingrown nail.

    >left big toenail got ingrown like 10 years ago
    >doctor removed it once, grew back ingrown
    >doctor removed it again, was growing back ingrown, doctor killed the root
    >few years later it got stuck on a sock and pulled up, had to get cut off again
    >few years later i accidentally kicked a wall and most of it came off again

I'm now on the fifth growth of my left big toenail and it looks absolutely disgusting. It's extremely thick, yellow/brown, sort of crooked. I still have to be careful when taking socks on and off, and always try to make sure nothing ever hits it or falls on it.

Do you put pressure on your toes / push off with your toes when you walk? Broke my big toe really badly and lost the nail, avoided walking with the toe for a long time and the part of the nail that grew during that time is way more curved than normal, where the newer nail is more normal.

      >It's extremely thick, yellow/brown
Are you sure you didn’t get a fungal infection along the way?

See a foot doctor. They will cut it and apply a chemical that prevents it from growing that way again.
I've had it done on both big toes. Both times it got infected due to it being ingrown. Both times it was caused by pulling a hangnail. Both times it was painful.
    Point being, see a doctor.

bro i had this for years
i fixed it with a surgery in Poland, they removed the "meat" on both sides of the nail and it hurt like crazy during recovery (couldn't walk for like a week) but it changed my life and fixed everything

Roll up a small piece of cotton into a like and put it under the side that's inflamed.
Not too deep, because the nail will break easily.
Expect the nail to break a few times, but it will also keep getting better each time.
Have the piece of cotton underneath the nail as much as possible, but change it 2-4 times a day. Put a new one before going to sleep.
You can also apply some sodium fusidate typically.
Don't wear shoes that are too tight and let the feet outside of socks as much as possible.
Other than that, clean up your diet.
Red meat + dairy + eggs + coffee + fruit + sugar will accelerate the process. Avoid pufas, starches and excessive fibers

Ingrown toenail removal procedures can be done at a medical clinic. I just had my two big toes done. Talk to a/your doctor.

The trick is to NEVER CUT the nail. You get a nice big emery board & file across the nail, never allowing the corners to become too short. I had chronically ingrown toe nails until I started only filing them, & I haven't had one since.

I used to get these bad as a teenager. Went to the clinic to have them freeze my toe, then cut the bit of nail out. I had them on both big toes, had to go in two separate trips so I could walk after.

Turns out it's super awkward trying to walk without feeling your big toe.

usually I get this randomly, not too bad, but one time I got both big toes very bad infected after wearing boots and exerting myself a lot, clipping the nail vertically on the side that was infected and pulling that sliver of nail until it was all the way out fixed it right away

  51. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

After this happening to me too many times, I just gut it out to the root in that sliver of area and it fixed it forever. I think it stopped growing as wide since I dug down to the root with a knife, idk if that how that even works but it hadn’t come back since I operated on myself over 6 years ago. Not recommended, but just what I did to fix it

To add, I had already been to a doctor who cut it out and it came back fricked up again, only seemed fixed after I cut it out myself

There's a surgery that a podiatrist can do where they cut the sides of the nail and use a chemical to stop the edges growing back. I used to deal with ingrowns twice a year. Had the surgery (literally took like 15 mins). My toes look absolutely normal and I have had no further issues.

Cut off the ingrown toenail? I've done it 3 times before. I just cut open the skin around it, sterlize it, pull the nail open and cut it off. Only about 2mm deep inside my skin and relief happened instantly

  55. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

Just cut it straight, not rounded. For fixing it I recommend getting a pair of israeliteelry pliers and small scissors. Cut towards yourself straight as deep as you can like 3 mm from the edge, then tear it off with pliers. If successful you should be holding a larger chunk of nail than you expected and it should smell like rotten flesh. It takes a bit of practice but I can do this whole operation within 10 minutes including sterilization and disinfection. You should feel relieved immediately, if not you didn’t take enough nail. You’ll have to wait like 2 weeks for it to grow back a bit. This procedure hurts less than when doctor applies local anesthetics and it heals within a day compared to a week with doctor.

I had chronic ingrown nails for most of my teenage years up to 20. Only thing that fixed it was phenol cauterization which cost me 500 bucks but was worth every penny.

I got these frickers several times. What worked best was cutting this part with a chunk of flesh, it needed to be long enough to cut out the nail bed so it won't grow again. After the surgery they stich it together and you will have thinner nail. But it hurts like motherfricker after.

Medgay here, I operate ingrown toenails on a weekly basis.

I see a lot of bullshit posted in this thread so hopefully this will add some clarification.

    >Ingrown general
-ingrown nails are a direct result of cutting them too short and 'around' the edges. You're supposed to keep your toenails slightly longer than your fingernails and cut them somewhat straight (so don't get tempted to cut around the edge).
-wearing (tight) shoes increases the risk, ingrown toenails are pretty much a problem of the modern human.

    >Prevention
-dont cut too short, longer than fingernails
-dont cut around the edges, keep it a straight or at max a very slightly curved line.

    >Treatment
If you've cut it too short, first step is to let it grow out.
-DONT start cutting out extra edges, this might give temporary relief but will only worsen it as you keep disfiguring the shape of your nail.
-podiatrists and pedicures sometimes try to lift the nail up using cotton balls or clips, there is little evidence for this, but it is a very non-invasive option you could give a try
-(surgical) partial nail extraction only works if done properly, so the base of the nail matrix (where the nail grows from) needs to be removed, otherwise it will grow back and frick you up again.

There is a very simple outpatient procedure that doctors can do where they chemically cauterize the outer parts of the root of your nail which causes them to grow more narrowly from then on. Permanent solution that doesn’t require complete removal of the nail. I had it done and haven’t had an ingrown toenail since.

The very edges of your nails should not be trimmed short. Ever since I stopped trimming the far left and right of my nails short these have never occurred again. I used to have 1 going on somewhere at all times. It's really that simple.

Go to a doctor and let them remove the sides of your nail. The procedure takes like 10 minutes from start to finish. They will also probably give you a few days sick leave from work. It's a win win situation for you.

I got rid of mine by first cutting it, ONLY at the spot that was digging into the skin. I didnt cut the entire nail coming inward. Then I wore open toed sandals for like a month or two, only wearing shoes when absolutely necessary. Cant lie, I miss it a little bit cause in a weird way the pain would feel good, especially when you dig into it with something kek

No one? No one knows how to sort this?

Get a small piece of tissue paper, screw it up and push it under the toe nail as close to the edge as possible.
This pushes the nail up gently and creates space. It's instant pain relief too.

Take it out after a few days and re assess if you need to replace it.

Literally just fix it yourself and stop wearing shoes that are too small.
    >How do I fix if myself?
Many ways. My preferences are method of pulling up the nail and filing it or if its serious, the razor line where you isolate the effected area and pull it up to be filed down.
There's like 5 ways to deal with them at home. And the best prevention is wearing the right size shoes.

go to a dermatologist and ask them to fix you up, i had the same problem and they basically cut out the side parts of my toenail and then burned them so they wouldn't grow back. right toe looks a bit weird not but im not a fricking foot model, and it beat blood in my socks. Also lose weight tubby.

Every now and then my big toe gets red and sore around the nail. I just ignore it and it eventually goes away.
I think it never got worse because I learned how to trim it properly after fricking up for a couple of times, and the pain coming back is because I like sitting on my feet like pic related which puts too much weight on it.
