You just fricking do it, to prove to yourself that you’re in charge. You are at the wheel, you have supreme power, you’re not just done puppet to the whims of neurochemical impulses, frick the adrenaline, frick the lactic acid, frick the pain. Look at your hand, open it and close it. You have the power, you have the control, close your hand around the bar and don’t let go. Period. It’s not easy, but it is simple.

Deny yourself, take up your cross daily, and follow Christ. Do all you do for the glory of God and glorify him in your body. Pray that he guides your resolve. Fast to enter into closeness with him. Give alms as an extension of your self-denial and learn to be more charitable.

To answer OP its just something you do. Without thinking, without debating. Do it automatically and after a few weeks or a month it becomes compulsive.

last two years I'd start running and lifting in april and quit by october but I"m 45 now and anything I can do to slightly slowdown aging or at least mog guys my age, I'm doing it. It's awful being this age now after being a young guy in my 20's and 30's all those years. I hit my 6 month mark though and there is no way I"m stopping. Every morning at 5 am. I get up early at like 3 I dick around here, eat, then leave at ten of 5. Then work from 7-330 pm, bed at 8-9pm.

I wonder this often too OP. For me, its about managing what little willpower I possess. I severly lack motivation in life. I have essentially accepted that I am miniscule, that I will amount to nothing. The only reason I do anything is because I keep waking up. I continue to live and breathe, for now, so I will continue to do whatever it is I am doing with my time in this realm. I wouldn't call it willpower, and it isn't the most optimal mindset for forcing myself to do new things or improve, but I think it works pretty well for the mundane. Rarely do I feel depressed or like I lack anything. Its just a default mode. However, if I do finally decide to put forth effort, I am not already burned out from the daily struggles of living. I can use that finite resource of "willpower" directly on whatever needs it.
