So far I can press overhead 155 but I do it in single reps since it takes the wind out of me when I do one. 1pl8 OHP is easy once you do it regularly with that weight.
OHP gets increasingly hard as the weight moves closer to your own BW, purely because of physics.
Is 1 pl8 really that impressive, I do it strict for reps
I have seen enough "strict OHP" that in fact are circus acts to always disregard online OHP numbers. Pic OP posted isn't a strict OHP, it's an olympic press. They banned it from the event precisely because of the amount of frickery people started doing.
A legit 1pl OHP is much more impressive than e.g a 2pl bench.
If that isn't a strict OHP then there is no such thing as a strict OHP, it's almost impossible to not lean back even a tiny bit to clear your head with the bar
If you can OHP rep relatively close to your bodyweight, you’re very strong compared to 99.99% of the world, but those .01% are *really* strong. Lifting 2pl8 OHP is fricking insane. That’s lifting 225 pounds over your head. More impressive than the other big lifts by far.
I can never seem to OHP more than 20 pounds over my bodyweight, is it a physics thing?
When I was 155 lbs I was stuck at 175 OHP
I'm 185 lbs now and at 205 OHP and I don't know how much higher I can go since 205 was a real grinder
No, it isn't impressive. You can get up to one plate for reps is like 6 months. 1.5 plate is when it gets respectable. 2 plates is impressive. over 2 plates is god tier. 3 plates is literally insane unless you are super fat
This is one of the rare cases where the IST paradox is actually true: 1 plate OHP is quite unimpressive, yet only a small percentage of the population can actually do it.
Damn, serious? If that is true, my 90lb seated military press will stall? Im on the second week of SS, 170lb 19 year old.
90lb ohp, 140lb bench, 205lb squat, 210lb deadlift.
I thought with linear progression I would have a 135lb ohp in like, 2 months?
Thanks for the reply. I'll do that if I stall, which means leaving SS for another program. I really don't want to go to triples or heavy singles, as I also want to get BIG like in pic, and I hear its volume for that. But I also first want the neural nerve strength thing Rip describes in the SS and PPST books.
They don’t want it bad enough. Been lifting 3 months after a year and a half off and I’m doing at least 6 reps of 1pl8.
t. skinny dyel gaining mass back quicker than expected
not really much a reason to do standing ohp anymore when you have flat and incline bench, then plenty dumbbells and machines exercises that hit shoulders better.
stocking shelves. construction. mostly manual labor jobs. you don't need a 2pl8 press to get the next bag of coffee down from the office's supply closet
Lifting your enemies overhead and throwing them down buildings
In all honesty, at the end of the day the most "functional" strength you can acquire is ironically biceps and grip strength which will tire first when you move medium weights around
Looking at gym lifts, hammer curls are probably your best bet
If you want functional strength for carrying stuff around, look into Strongman training. Moving obscure objects will give you better preparation than just doing the big 3 or 4 lifts with a nice and practical barbell
Special Forces recommend OHP over 145lbs. It helps with activities like carrying 100lbs of equipment around at all times.
Why would you want to be weaker than SOFs?
If you collapse under the weight of your bugout bag or can't even get it up, you are ngmi.
60kg 1rm is equivalent of like 45kg 6 reps. If we take your belt off then we're at like 42.5kg. See you next year when you finally achieved 60kg x 5 while being 350lbs
1/2/3/4 bro, that may have played a role but i think what got me so quickly to it is incline bench, heavy lateral raises and heavy triceps work, and also i think most newbies like me dont know how to hold the bar properly to generate as much power as possible
I don't wanna look you that's why I'll be avoiding meme compound exercises and focus only on isolation.
The biggest guys in my gym never touched a barbell outside of bench press maybe.
Feels like powershitters are psyoping this board.
Doing compounds in the 8-12 range is optimal for hypertrophy. Also using the weight as a tool vs obsessing over it is the way.
Just do a dumbbell variation.
No exercise is a meme, it's all in how you do it, and for what purpose.
How the frick is 1pl8 OHP not impressive? How in the frick? My dl is 180kg and my squat is 140kg, yet my OHP has been stuck for more than a year at 40 kg.
Much more impressive (imo).
Body weight to lift weight ratios favor lighter lifters, so if you can be fat and still have good numbers when dividing by body weight you are a strong motherfricker.
Is 1 pl8 really that impressive, I do it strict for reps
Personally, yes since 1 pl8 OHP or higher is always impressive compared to bench press.
I can bench 335 lbs, ohp 1pl8 for 10 reps but only 1rm like 190. OHP gets hard as FRICK past like 160lb imo

>A legit 1pl OHP is much more impressive than e.g a 2pl bench.
Thats surprising because I got my 1 plate OHP a good couple of months before my 2 plate bench
If that isn't a strict OHP then there is no such thing as a strict OHP, it's almost impossible to not lean back even a tiny bit to clear your head with the bar
Yeah but you should move your head forward again when the bar clears your head
I can never seem to OHP more than 20 pounds over my bodyweight, is it a physics thing?

>Is 1 pl8 really that impressive,
No
It isn't a competitive lift and as such it isn't in gym culture
Is 1 plate seriously that impressive though? I am being serious. I have been lifting 3 months and I'm already at 1 plate for 5x5.
I feel like squatting over 3 plates is much more impressive.
Damn, serious? If that is true, my 90lb seated military press will stall? Im on the second week of SS, 170lb 19 year old.
90lb ohp, 140lb bench, 205lb squat, 210lb deadlift.

Adjust your volume to 10x3 and do weighted dips. I never got to 1pl8 when I ran SL. Highest was 115. Doing 10x3 will break through plateaus.
Thanks for the reply. I'll do that if I stall, which means leaving SS for another program. It's hard. I'm only up to 110 right now.
OHP make me feel big and strong
They don’t want it bad enough. Been lifting 3 months after a year and a half off and I’m doing at least 6 reps of 1pl8.
t. skinny dyel gaining mass back quicker than expected
I saw a guy ohp 185 at my ymca today. Saw a different guy bench 435 a few days ago. Idk why most of IST reports having weak asses at their gyms
not really much a reason to do standing ohp anymore when you have flat and incline bench, then plenty dumbbells and machines exercises that hit shoulders better.
is OHP strength even that practical outside of a weight lifting setting? Like what situations is that strength useful, honest question
stocking shelves. construction. mostly manual labor jobs. you don't need a 2pl8 press to get the next bag of coffee down from the office's supply closet
true, I'm not saying its a useless lift, its just not something normies really care about I guess
nope. normies dont care about the ohp. bench and deadlift seem to be king
Lifting your enemies overhead and throwing them down buildings
In all honesty, at the end of the day the most "functional" strength you can acquire is ironically biceps and grip strength which will tire first when you move medium weights around
do dumbbells for compound lifts kind of hit those muscles just out of the nature of moving around?
Looking at gym lifts, hammer curls are probably your best bet
If you want functional strength for carrying stuff around, look into Strongman training. Moving obscure objects will give you better preparation than just doing the big 3 or 4 lifts with a nice and practical barbell
You need ~185lb OHP to Bane-snap lanklets over your knee.
Tipping something over that's tall enough you gotta use your shoulders.
Being honest though most gym strength isn't very useful outside
Special Forces recommend OHP over 145lbs. It helps with activities like carrying 100lbs of equipment around at all times.

If you collapse under the weight of your bugout bag or can't even get it up, you are ngmi.
it's very fun to literally hold your gf over your head. Plus, if you're halfway attractive yourself she probably won't weigh >135lbs anyway
what website do you think you are on
I'm a DYEL that's been lifting for under 2 months and I can OHP more than a plate, do people just not train shoulders at all?
can you OHP 1pl8 for 5 reps? anyone can 1 rep max 1pl8 with the ugliest form ever, but repping it with correct form is a completely different beast
I hit 1pl8 OHP after 3 months of training, and i'll rep it soon, it was easy af, powershitting bros keep winning
60kg 1rm is equivalent of like 45kg 6 reps. If we take your belt off then we're at like 42.5kg. See you next year when you finally achieved 60kg x 5 while being 350lbs
>equivalent of like 45kg 6 reps
i can throw that weight in the air and clap lol
i also did 5x5 on the incline bench before attempting it 45kg for 5 reps was my warmup lol
You also look like a big guy.
1/2/3/4 bro, that may have played a role but i think what got me so quickly to it is incline bench, heavy lateral raises and heavy triceps work, and also i think most newbies like me dont know how to hold the bar properly to generate as much power as possible
maybe I am
you look like a troony lmao
Wait, is a belt actually of any used for an OHP?
yeah, i can brace into it and avoid looking like a crossfitter
Good form. Why the belt?
so i can stay stiffy
I don't wanna look you that's why I'll be avoiding meme compound exercises and focus only on isolation.

whys the bar so tiny
It isn't an easy lift. Naturally you'll be a lot weaker on that then bench, dl or squat. Even doing 225 OHP means you are pretty strong at it.
because real men press at least 1.5
times bw that is
if it goes past 2 plates it gets really freaky
How the frick is 1pl8 OHP not impressive? How in the frick? My dl is 180kg and my squat is 140kg, yet my OHP has been stuck for more than a year at 40 kg.
>Mfw 3 months in the gym and I OHP 60 5x5, bench 100kg 5x5 but squat 100kg for 1 and diddly 120kg for 1
I've been lifting for 45 minutes and I can press 1pl8 for 10 reps, lol people think that is impressive?
natty good genes

What if your bodyweight is like 30% fat?
Much more impressive (imo).

Still crazy impressive. If a 300 lb dude had a 300 OHP that would be fricking crazy, even if he was otherwise disgusting.
its usually manlets with t-rex arms that do that
its a good way to hurt yourself probably
