      You don't

You don't need to spend hours training running a marathon to be able to run one. Any athletic male with a strong heart and decent cardio can run one. The Greek who ran from Marathon to Athens probably never trained for a marathon in his life. He was just healthy and was able to go and do it.

I can get out of bed and run a marathon right now if I needed to, I would just be sore afterwards. I train cardio 5x a week but never low intensity slow steady state cardio. I only train short sprints or (15-60 seconds) or medium sprints (2-5 minutes). Last month I visited Scotland and I ran up Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, 12 miles 1350m elevation with 0 running training, and I felt great the whole time, never ran out of breath.

just find the air force's BMT running program, they are one of the more plump branches so it should be easy to ease into. basic was a long ass time ago but off the top of my head i think we would do 5 minutes of alternating run/walk as a warm-up and then a 25 minute self-paced run with no walking. so easy that even the jelly boys in my flight could make it through

Unless your hike involves REALLY steep inclines all the way, you'll be fine without cardio.

    This is the correct answer.

There's some fairly good research that suggests that 45 minutes is the most beneficial for mitigating things like depression, ADHD, and other mental illnesses.

But for the most part 30 minutes is fine and you're materially on the right track for not wasting your time if you personally aren't seeing benefits.

But I don't think that is possible. I am lean and very athletic + I have a track and field background.

because it's unlikely you go hard in that time for it to matter.
If you went a little harder you wouldn't have to go beyond 15-20 a day.
But if you're in liss/zone2 territory you're pretty much in it for an hour or you're just wasting your time. Both work, even HIIT works if you have the base training down but what tends to be the most lackluster is liss HR without the time. It's pretty much the same benefit area as just walking (which is better than nothing) but there's room for improvement
