I'd recommend trying out the leg press as your first alternative. Usually dudes who hate squats like leg press and vice versa

Yeah I hate squats so tried leg press last week and it was awesome. Still going to squat but will also leg press from now on.

There is no reason that you should squat if you don’t want to. There are dozens of exercises to train your legs. Why force yourself to do one you hate

      >Why force yourself to do one you hate
I'll be honest even if it makes me look like a moron: I fell for the squat-fetishist meme that squats are "the king of lifts" and that my gains were going to crash if I ever stopped squatting. So I just suffered through it like a kid eating his spinach.

gym is not suppose to be fun, squats are hard but that's what makes them good. after you finish your sets, the dopamine release you get from it is amazing.

Squats will prime your entire body for all lifting. Same as deadlifts.
Your gains won't crash but they will suffer.

This is just silly shit rippetoe said with nothing to back it up.

You know why dudes with chicken legs can have huge upper bodies? Because all their recovery goes to the lifts they actually do. I’m not advocating for a physique like that but your strength elsewhere in your body is not dependent on squats

            Anonymous

Nah it's because so many people are hitting squats and dls before upper body or impeding recovery by doing it 2x a week every week the same amount as they do ohp.

            Anonymous

I remember when morons across the internet would tell people to squat when they asked how to get big arms. It wasn't just this site, it was a moronic phenomenon everywhere on the internet a few years back

Your reply makes literally no sense for what I said. Never said squatting was bad, it will do literally nothing for your arms though. People that say that shit are moronic, your body can most definitely grow without staying systemically proportional. If you're too young to know what I'm talking about, there was basically a wave of squat cultists that acted like squatting would get you big regardless of whether you isolated shit that has nothing to do with squats

True I fell for it too, it was Rippetoe's bullshit echoed through IST, bodybuilding forums, youtube, etc. I did his SS and looked like a t-rex freak because he advocated that just squatting will stimulate every muscle in your body and there's no need for curls

I was a victim of this dumb ass mentality too.

What killed the squat for me was this experience. I was going extremely hard on squats for awhile and my legs were getting huge. And I had these tree trunks sitting under me and I had to keep buying new pants. It was like “whoa holy shit! I have some cannons!” But the thing is I’ve played sports my whole life including soccer and skiing. I remember playing a soccer game out of the blue and being wildly out of breath and slow as hell. There was nothing functional in those big legs. I wasn’t faster or could kick harder. Another time a few months later my dad invited me skiing. And skiing has always been effortless for me. But now when with my big cannon legs, I couldn’t keep up with my old man. My legs were literally on fire and my performance was dog shit.

I remember on the drive home from the mountains having a mental crisis thinking what the frick is the point of all this leg work if any activity I used to excel at I now do worse…. Shortly after that I tapered off on all my lower body shit and now I’m a fast efficient athlete again despite training legs LESS.

I think there is a proper way to train legs in the gym for explosive power and other beneficial attributes, but just blindly going for mass and size doesn’t really translate to performance.

I have very lanky proportions so my leverages are bad, I can't squat more than 2pl8 without inevitably fricking up my back even though my form could be used as a textbook example. Do split squats and hack squats instead.

You hate them because youre not good at them, because its not a natural lift for humans.
Squats are a bilateral movement, which has no carryover to real athletic unilateral movement. It is also only training in the saggital plane, which is also problematic for many reasons.
Squats frick up your running mechanics, and give you a big girly ass. They also compress the spine and take all the fluid out of it, and it exagerates scoliosis when you go heavy on them.

Squats are a complete meme, and only a Redditor would ever think that this joke has any good effect on your body and athleticism.

Only a no lifts homosexual could type this noncery. Track and field athletes are forged through heavy squats. As the name implies they are *the* athletic demographic. Go back to your shake weights before I bend you over the axis of your sagittal plane and assrape you to death

Didn't they literally realize deadlifts or rdl's were the true cheat code for sprinting. I could've swore I read that they were the thing that really helped change the game at some point at elite level. Quads are where your pushing power comes from, but hamstrings are like a big rubber band on the back of your leg

Then don’t squat, my man. Do the leg press instead. Squatting is a meme lift that has no practical use because we aren’t supposed to bend down with shit on our shoulders. It’s dangerous and needlessly harder than leg pressing, despite them both providing the same benefit.

    TLDR: Leg press >>>>> squat

literally doesnt matter if all you're going for is aesthetics

Leg press has carryover to absolutely nothing and will not give you any gains unless you are gear. You can legpress 2000lbsx20 with full rom and slow controlled and you will still have small weak legs. You are wasting your time. It's a jerkoff exercise. Literally better off fooling around with wonky 2pl8 squats.

okay post yourself leg pressing 2000lb x 20 homosexual

It is kind of funny, people say leg press is not functional, but I feel like in a real world application where you didn't have access to tools you would be more likely to wedge yourself against something and push with your legs than you would squatting something on your back

Most moronic post in this thread. Leg Press is functional, squatting isn't. There have been situations where I had needed to move something with my legs while on my back, ergo leg press has actual IRL benefits. Meanwhile, there is literally never a situation where you will be holding something heavy on your shoulders and squatting down with it.

          Hold this L, fatso.
