technically speaking PhDs are the only trustworthy people in academia. they spend years establishing and earning that trust.
ofc this makes them trustworthy ONLY in their narrow field of expertise but they are trustworthy.

80% of studies can't be replicated. Even a total fraud like david sinclair managed to scam a big pharna for 720mil based on his fake studies no one can replicate. Modern academic science is absolute bs.only big pharma does real studies that aren't publicly available. Then big pharma does "studies" for fda and to scam clients

Fricking thank you. The whole “out source all thought to somebody with a PhD” has always been absolute moronation and people are actually proud of their “intelligence” in never daring to think for themselves on any technical issue.

it's a bell curve there too. i've met a very few people who are actually genius tier, but the vast majority of people in academia are self-congratulatory i-fricking-love-science redditors.

Peer review is a meme, fraud makes it past peer review as long as a study doesn't stand out too bad. Some PhD student who is sleep deprived and caffeinated probably skim reads the study in many cases as their professor's proxy.

The problem with people who have PHDs and are soley in academia or just out of academia is that they have no real life experience. They will only defend what ever their thesis is because otherwise if it's proven false that means the 8-12 years of college was all a waste. They defend their point until they are a a joke and chased down to the basement of whatever department building they are in.

it just means you dedicate even more time on a certain, niche subject with some perks of being allowed to study that subject using university resources and funds. You are dedicating time and effort into it, but it doesnt make you wiser, smarter or necessarily a better authority on most things outside of that very niche subject you researched, like mentioned earlier in the theread.

a dude can be a phd graduate in nutrition having studied, for example, how a certain amino acid or whatever, affects muscle growth. but that doesnt mean hes any better at nutrition than half of this board.

Optometrists are not medical doctors, they don't go to medical school and basically have the equivalent of a bachelors degree.
That said I don't agree with the idea that only credentialed "experts" should have the right to opine, you should always engage with the validity of the argument whenever practical not who is making the argument.

      Anonymous

Agreed. If highly credentialed people were usually correct I’d be more inclined to disagree, but one needs to remember know further back than Covid to remember how the experts were wrong a near daily basis and average people posited ideas that wound up being correct.

It’s dangerous to give a small group of people a monopoly on describing reality, particularly when those people are frequently wrong. Which is my biggest grievance with the whole “listen to the experts” mantra.

You shouldn't trust people for granted outside of their field of expertise. Even when you have someone talking about their own field, if you really want to reach the truth you need to ask them for the underlying studies and read them with scrutiny.

Smart people WILL still just lazily parrot what they heard if they are uninterested or not paid for it.

For anyone new to the drama there is a wunderkind in the nutrition research space named Nick Norwitz who is publishing some very interesting research. You may have heard of the "Oreos lower LDL" study from a few months back. That's him.

Nick is a shameless self promoter and has a huge institutional backing from Israel. He had IBS and going keto cured it so now it's his life's mission to make everyone keto.

For reasons unknown very skinny people on keto see huge spikes in cholesterol, most worryingly LDL which fricks you in a dose dependent manner. Nick's "Lipid Energy Model" is a cope and seethe model he created to prove that "Lean Mass Hyper Responders" (skinnyhomosexual ketotards with hugely elevated LDL levels like himself) are ackshually the healthiest people on planet earth.

There is nothing wrong with Nick's research thus far. He's shown that skinnyhomosexual ketotards have high LDL levels and that adding back in carbs actually lowers LDL (hence Oreos lower LDL clickbait headline) because your body slows the unknown compensatory mechanism that it's doing to try to keep you alive.

What hasn't been proven is if those high LDL levels are dangerous or not. There will *NEVER* be enough skinnyhomosexual ketotards out there to study to prove that having sky high LDL is ok as long as you're in his super sekrit cohort. You have to look at actual plaque accumulation which can't be done at scale. It just can't.

Nick makes a lot of supposed claims about the magic of keto that are unproven (magic bullet for every disease imaginable - cancer, Alzheimer's, beetus, natural aging, etc.), but being a crafty israelite he is VERY careful to never state anything outright. Thus, he can never be proven wrong because he slips right out of your fingertips.

Layne got stomped into the ground by Nick because Layne got tricked by Nick's clickbait and was coaxed into a snafu. Layne overreacts to fricking everything which is why even Jason Blaha destroyed him. Layne now has constant melties about Nick.

It's literally fricking impossible to discuss things with ketotards because they have no fricking clue what they're talking about and have no fricking clue how to analyze research. Leaving this thread forever.
