Where did IST get this strange idea in which every man should be able to easily bench 2pl8?

cause most people here dont go to the gym and believe autistically doing 20 pushups in a row make you capable of benching alot

Seriously? I would say over half the guys at my gym can bench at 2pl8

In my gym too. I am the skinny fat white guy lifting for a month and already went from 45kg to 60kg with 6 reps. I will hit my two plates soon.

Now I jinxed properly... But I also noticed around me that all benches were full that most regulars around me are also doing around 50-60kg... Which, somehow they don't progress it seems

      Anonymous

Your goal is realistic but it's stupid to predict you'll bench 100kg because you've gone from 45 to 60kg in a month. This isn't linear. It's not like saying you'll save $24,000 this year because you saved $6,000 in the last 3 months. You could get to 70kg & stall for 3 months.
That being said you'll most likely get to 2 plates but I'm just sick of seeing people here count their eggs before they're hatched.

People who say 'every man should easily be able to bench two plates' don't actually mean that. They mean, 'the majority of men should be able to bench two plates, & if you're not part of this group, you're not really worth talking to or about, because you're a total genetic deadend & catering remarks to account for you does a disservice to the guys who aren't genetic frickups athletically by lowering the bar.' Their statement is technically falsified by the bottom of the barrel types but they don't regard them at all because they don't view them as worth being regarded. I think it's good to strike a balance. You want to be able to acknowledge the diversity of people's genetics & responses to training but you also don't want to let the bottom feeders dominate the conversation with their 'Ive got the worst genetics' race to the bottom. Almost every man should be able to bench 2 plates.

Every man should. The reason they can't is because lack of discipline and willpower to consistently train. Thus, they can't be considered men.

The funniest part is that 2pl bench is still BY FAR the most common out of 1/2/3/4. Like OP, majority of people at my gym seems to lift around 1.5pl, but you can see older bigger dudes do 2pl and further. People straight up don't OHP and if they do it's some DYEL with 30kg total. Deadlift i feel like is either 1.5pl newbies or powershitters lifting 5-6, no inbetween. 3pl squat is INCREDIBLY rare, dudes who do it are fit as frick and even they struggle with it visibly, but if you listen to IST people here got to 3pl in 4 months of SS

      Anonymous

I am in bad shape now. But when younger I was hitting the barbells consistently. 2 pl8 bench was the easiest by far. Then 1pl8 OHP. My deadlift I couldn't get to 4 pl8 because my grip kept failing. Squat I couldn't get to 3 pl8, it was always just a bit higher than my bench.

      Anonymous

For me it was 1pl8 OHP and 3pl8 squat was the easiest. I used to do cycling so my legs were strong, and doing a 5x5 with squats first meant I always pushed them hard.
DL was only a little over squats since I was tired and had bad form.
      Was fat.
You are right though. Most dudes at the commercial gym did 315lb squat or less, while many more did 2pl8 bench.

        Anonymous

        >I used to do cycling
what kind of cycling? I imagine cycling is like rooning where you build slow twitch endurance type 1 fibers so it doesn't carry over to squats that well. could be wrong though.

squat is a very technical lift, most homosexuals who go to 3pl8 squat in couple of months egolift themselves there with horrible form, olympic style ass to grass 3pl8 is indeed very difficult, but the powershitting folding to parallel is easy a frick

        Anonymous

        >squat is a very techical lift
this is the main problem with minimalist powershitting routines for beginners, like SS. Beginners don't even have the mobility to have the correct form to get proper stimuation of their muscles. They get more efficient at whatever form they can manage but don't gain much muscle, get fat because muh bulk and quit.
When I was a noob and did SS I hardly ever felt any fatigue in my legs because of my good morning technique. Got a strong lower back though, kek.

I'd estimate about 90% of the male population could rep 2pl8 for 3-5x reps. The reason they don't is because most of them don't understand the form or haven't trained.

Taking this into consideration, 2.5pl8 is probably the median for most men.

The average male bench press is 135. I've been to a lot of gyms. Unless someone is very into weightlifting they are going to bench 135, 155, or 185. 205 and 225 is rare and I've only seen a handful of guys bench more than 225, and like 2 or 3 guys ever bench 315

This guys right. If you stay in the same gym for more than a year you’ll be amazed that 95% look exactly the same as the first time you saw them. But still like I said the average guy is 5’9 and if you’re lean and natty at 5’9 you should weigh under 160 pounds. So benching 225 is actually pretty impressive for the average guy

          Anonymous

1/2/3/4 for 1 rep is too easy to be a lifetime lifting goal, so it’s obviously for “reps” if you can do 10 reps of any one of these you’re really strong compared to normal people. 2/3/4/5 is a more suitable “end goal” for 1 rep, but even that can be surpassed by most natty lifters if one is training and eating properly for a few years. And you don’t even have to be powerlifting exclusively.

            Anonymous

I think it's for 1 rep because even if it was for 5 or 8 that's still a little short of a time time goal, which leads me to think it's purely a metric to say, 'You're on your way now', where 1 rep makes sense

            Anonymous

"For reps" is in a technical sense 2 or more. When you say it without specifying, it can mean anything from 3-15, who the frick knows. It will never mean 2, because most people have some sort of sense of shame to mean 2 when saying "for reps" without specifying.

10 reps on compound lifts seems stupid. It gets difficult to maintain form and proper breathing technique on those exercises for so long.

Yes, but 3 reps to me is still significantly different to 5 reps; if you're talking about a weight which you are really pushing to lift. My point is that no fricker here ever says what 1/2/3/4 is rep/set wise.

I never said it wasn't, only that if a guy don't specify it could mean nearly anything. It wouldn't go much over 10 because a guy saying his "for rep" total and doing 10 or over would specify 100% of the time.

Probably the gym you go to.. check out the others in your area and see if you’ll be posting the same thread. Otherwise, your little town doesn’t have any strong guys lol. Only a few guys including me who bench over 2pl8 for reps here in the UK, but it’s a homosexual gym.

But when I lived in the US (I’m American) I went to less homosexual gyms, and plenty of people (including teens like myself at the time) were repping over 2pl8. I was repping 275 at one point and I had just turned 18, and I was a simply athletic build. No gear necessary. When I went to college, the university gyms and the gym in town there, soo many people were 2pl8ing, many of whom were certainly natty.
