Recipe? Always wanted to try lentils but not sure how to make them

Buy or pirate either of these books:

I make dal for my lunch meal prep once a week. It's so delicious, so easy too cook, and very easy to get lots of variety. Only advice I'd give is that it's usually good to cook it for longer (sometimes a lot longer) than the recipe says.

Recipe? Always wanted to try lentils but not sure how to make them

Not OP, but here's my favourite lentil recipe.

        2 tbsp ghee
        3 cloves
        3 green cardamom pods
        2 inches cinnamon
        1 tsp cumin seeds
        1 tsp mustard seeds
        1.5 onions diced
        1 tsp salt
        1 tbsp minced ginger
        1 tbsp minced garlic
        1 tsp cumin powder
        1 tsp turmeric powder
        1 tsp coriander powder
        1/2 tsp kashmiri chili powder
        3 medium tomatoes
        300g masoor dal
        1 litre water
        1 tsp garam masala
        6 chopped coriander stems

        300g broccoli
        2-3 tbsp ghee

        1. Add cloves, cardamom, cinnamon to ghee and fry until aromatic

        2. add cumin and mustard seeds and fry for 30-60 seconds

        3. add onions and salt and fry until browned

        4. add garlic, ginger and fry for 1-2 minutes

        5. add powders and fry for another minute or so

        6. add tomatoes and fry until soft

        7. rinse your dal in water and add with the water

        8. simmer for 1-4 hours, the more the better

        9. when it's about done stir garam masala and coriander stems in, also check there's enough salt

        10. chop broccoli, place on a baking sheet, baste with ghee and sprinkle some salt on top, cook under the broiler until it's crispy

        11. serve dal with broccoli on side/on top

That recipe makes 5 portions of ~330 kcal and 20g protein. You can eat it just like that or serve it with some rice or roti. I will usually cook it until it's quite thick, and eat it with roti. One homemade roti is about 100-120 kcal of mostly carbs.

This is why I stick to roasting chicken or grilling it plus two sides of normal vegetables (seasoned with butter and salt). Sorry I ain't got time for 40 ingredients, try 7 for the meal hahaha

VERY cool. I prefer shitting only once a day and not farting all the time, but I'm happy for anyone who can eat this fodder. Maybe I'm a genetic mistake, maybe I'm pure Indo-European Kurgan pastoralist; but I've even tried sprouting these little Indians, doesn't go down right. I'll keep eating animals and their milk and not living like a prey animal, you take care now.

Also, lentil protein is only like 85% digestible, so it's more like 65g protein. Hope that helps!

Protein is protein, this digestability bullshit is old fake news. As long as you cook the lentils long enough to make them digestable you absorb everything.

You should combine them with different protein sources for a complete amino profile tho.

Thanks for reminding me soup exists, anon. Haven't had it in a while due to the recent heatwave but now it cooled down by 15-20c and is perfect weather for some good nutritious soup.

Don't fall for the pulse propaganda, fren. Our soups were meant to have root vegetables, meat, and maybe a bit of barley or oats. Resist the beangays, they can't hurt you anymore than your painful fards.

I honestly doubt 75g of lentil protein is even equivalent to 10g of beef or egg protein. Reminds me of when I first started lifting 20 years and I'd eat loads of bread since each slice had 5g of protein, and I couldn't understand why I wasn't making any gains for months.

I like to boil my lentils until they absorb all the water. Will sometimes mix with some tomatoes and it becomes a bit like salad. Cheap & nice.
