You're fricked because they will try and argue that you are a threat to yourself or others.
If you try to escape you will be anally raped by an extended stay. My advice? Put the pills in your lip and spit them out and play your time there.

this psychologist argues that bipolar disorder might just be a combination of depression and rage issues.

if your going to try and not take your medication, you have to get your anger under control.

would it be strong of you to restrain another man who is muscular and goes to teh gym? yes.

so then by that same logic, it would be strong of you to restrain your self and your own anger, it is never weakness to not give in to rage, it is streangth.

do not express your anger, explain it. or just let silence do the talking.

i hope you understand that hitting your cousin was unacceptable and you won't have much success in life if you can't learn to get your anger under control.

yea but we live in a world where attacking other people literally only makes a given situation worse, if someone is trying to medicate you, or literally any other problem, you have to find non violent, non rage filled, non screaming options to deal with it.

you can pretend to take the medication, or you can quietly refuse, you can leave the area and go on a walk, but there was no excuse to hit him and if you continue to make excuses for shit like that then other people are going to keep treating you like a crazy person that needs to be locked up and zombified with medication.

dude, what are you not understanding, it doesn't matter what you "told him", there are things that are out of your control, we live in a society where you can't get away with being violent or even being dramatically angry or yelling, you either behave in a restrained and in control manner or people will continue to treat you like a crazy person and your life will spiral more and more out of control into loserdom, the choice is yours.

How did they try to make you take them? Were they being physically aggressive? If so it was self-defense although you probably don't want there to be a criminal issue involved. If you legitimately can't act normal that is you interpret their saying you have to take the pills as physical aggression then maybe you are crazy. If everything is over now they can't send you to a mental hospital over previous behavior. So they can do it if there's a continuing issue but that issue has to be present at the time you're examined at the hospital. It can't be based on something they say you did historically. So if you go to the hospital and you say I feel fine I'd like to talk to my lawyer I don't consent to being detained here but I understand you're all just doing your job but I don't consent to this and I'm going to exercise my right to remain silent, then there's not much they can do to you on that basis. They can however antagonize you. They might be allowed by Statute law to do things like a blood draw and so if you're uncooperative that might harm your case. Involuntary commitment is a medical legal procedure it's not merely medical. Doctors have never had the power to imprison people until the government gave it to them by Statute law. If you are involuntarily committed basically do what they say and explain how you feel you want to continue treatment in the community. Don't tell them you don't want to continue treatment. Just voluntarily comply and talk about how you feel that continuing your treatment voluntarily in the community would be in everyone's best interest. Then you can always stop taking the pills. And then you should probably stop associating with people who are going to try and force you to take medication. Unless the medication is the only thing between you living on the street because you can't hold a job or something.

Not necessarily. The only way you ever get taken to a psych ward is if you do something crazy in the presence of people. If you can hit someone you can even cut someone's head off as long as you say well I'm exercising my Fifth Amendment right to remain silent, they can't infer from you exercising your rights that you're mentally disordered. And if the police are really going to just take you to the psychiatric ward on the basis of the report that you assaulted someone, well they should just arrest you for assault.

What about OP not respecting the boundaries of his family? He’s probably crazy and he’s most likely violating his family’s boundaries by not taking medication

        Anonymous

That's not a legitimate boundary to have. It's legitimate if you're letting someone live with you for free to have that as a thing you would expect them to do, it's really a dick move but that's marginally acceptable. But if they don't you don't try and force them to take the pills you just say well I'm sorry you can't live here anymore but I respect your choice. There's a lot of missing parts here, but everyone I knew as a young man who had a little time as an inpatient and was convinced to take pills came from an objectively awful family situation. It was just utterly terrible. Like if you knew how their mothers behaved you would wonder how anyone would be mentally healthy and such a situation. It's the same if you knew how they ate. And so much of what we call psychiatric problem is probably malnutrition and genetic polymorphisms that mean someone requires more of a certain nutrient. What's more concerning is that he punched his cousin but even that normal people wouldn't consider minor physical aggression between family members to be a sign of a need to go to the Psych ward. That his family is willing to have the state fix him like that shows that they're degenerate people and he should get away from them because good people don't ever take family to the psych ward unless they're like got a knife to someone's throat or whatever. Just pushing and shoving it's not the best and it probably means you shouldn't live together but only a really scummy family would use that as a way to get someone committed

          Anonymous

I see your point 100% but we do t have the full story. In my experience, things probably aren’t going well for OP and haven’t been for a while for the family to do that. That’s how it was in my case at least and I’m glad they did because I was able to get help I really needed and was ready for.

If he isn’t ready then it’s pointless and they should just cut him loose and stay out of his affairs

            Anonymous

We don't have the full story, but of the people I know what I related is far more common. I've also studied the topic in terms of the 1960s antipsychiatry movement, there's that study of the professor who sent grad students into psych wards who only fake symptoms for one day and then had variable length days. There's the follow-up to that where some doctors running psych wards were so indignant that they said he should send them fake patients and they would easily be able to tell. They told him that they found all sorts of fake patients. He then told them he didn't send a single person. Psychiatry is a pseudoscience and even at the point that the police have brought someone to the psych ward let's say the physician finds there was no reason to do that. That means the police are on the hook potentially for assault potentially for battery potentially for false imprisonment potentially for lost wages or defamation. So it's a system where pretty much the doctors don't worry about people being held for 24 hours because this is mainly something that happens to poor white trash or in the states black trash. If you're rich enough that when they're coming after you you say hang on I've got my lawyer I'm going to call them, of course the lawyer says don't say anything to them. And the lawyer will then come to the hospital and you know it probably doesn't escalate if your lawyer is going to come with you. Because then the lawyer can just say you don't have to answer that and they definitely can't construe it as symptom at that point. It's just you following legal advice because in any medical situation the doctor can't take you refusing to answer questions as evidence of a mental disorder. It's your legal right to refuse to answer questions. You also can never be put in an adverse position legally where you have to refute the case that someone else has put and they probably won't even be present, it'll be the police relaying that this is what the family says.

              Anonymous

Even if they come to the hospital to relate things to the doctor, the doctor isn't a judge. If there's a question of fact and you're not arguing no it didn't happen yes it did happen but just saying well I'm going to invoke my right to remain silent, the doctor can't take that as evidence of mental disorder. You're never by the law put in a position where you have to refute what someone's laying on you. But again this is something that usually happens to crazy people and if you were crazy and you were brought to the doctor by the police, you wouldn't be in your right mind so you'd start trying to argue your way out of it. And that my friend is mental illness because it's never in your interest cooperate with the police or a doctor acting as a government agent. If you do end up getting committed anyway you can get a habeas corpus or whatever review you have or you can just comply and get out as quickly as possible and then not be an idiot again.

                >the doctor isn’t a judge
True but they can go to a judge to get an injunction and keep you there indefinitely. They tried to get me to voluntarily extend my stay and I said no and they were like well if you don’t do it then we’re just going to go to a judge.

Thankfully I was able to work it out by my mom coming down and they got me into an outpatient program but otherwise whk knows how long they would’ve kept me

As to family, lots of people are very ignorant that Psychiatry is not an exact science. Like diabetes medication probably brings down your blood sugar and that's not really controversial. What the correct diagnosis is, especially for someone who's been diagnosed as bipolar or schizophrenic or Autistic or something like that, it's a very questionable diagnosis especially if someone is still living with family who are convinced they're mentally ill. You could just have a bunch of buttholes who mistreat you and possibly each other and they think that if you don't like it you must be mentally ill. Like imagine you had a coworker you really didn't like who you could deal with at work but then you had to live with them. It might drive you crazy. So we don't know what the guys situation is, but taking psychiatric drugs because of all their side effects is a fairly radical thing to do and if he's still so enmeshed with family that they're looming over him about pills, that's something to look at if he doesn't like it. If he's capable of riding a skateboard which requires a degree of balance, he's probably capable of working.

Bipolar is real, my mother had an episode after dealing with death of her brother. Would impulsively buy things, make outlandish claims and theories based on observations (she thought a celebrity moved into our street because of the numberplate on the car) in her manic phases and would sit on the couch and eat ice cream in the middle of the night or hardly move in her depressive phases. It took about 1 year for the symptoms to go.

There are people who might benefit from Psychiatric drugs, the problem is that there's no real way to tell who will and who won't. Like if someone is unable to care for themselves at all under any circumstances without taking drugs okay maybe that's a decent idea. But in far too many cases especially for males it's Mommy thinks you're mentally ill because you live at home with her and she harasses you but she won't kick you out. And then this develops into diagnosis of schizophrenia often times. For example whenever there's a court case about whether the government should really have the power to compel people to take medication here, you get some fat white woman from What's called the local schizophrenia Society talking about how her precious darling boy would be living on the street if he weren't living at home with her taking the pills. Now it's pretty unlikely that he can't function, what's more likely is that living with her is horribly torturous and he doesn't see any way out. This is why before they invented all these drugs the old cliche it was the psychiatrist going tell me about your mother... everyone thinks their parents are crazy but if we go by an objective functional analysis most people do all right in spite of the fact that they think their parents are crazy. When the Children don't Thrive especially if it's something that comes on later in life, one of the big things to look at is the parents. And then so much of this is white people don't eat properly. But white women think it's the doctor's pills that make you better not eating appropriate diet

You never really need to go into one. All of the medications they can prescribe you can get as an outpatient. Literally all they will do in a psych ward is if you're there involuntarily hold you there and give you medication. There's no therapy it's not like they're going to try and get to the heart of your childhood issues or whatever. They're literally just going to hold you there and give you drugs until you're talking in a way they feel is acceptable. And that's if you're there involuntarily. It's also very bad for your development to be put in that sort of coercive situation.
