Early 10s (or even a little earlier) was peak everything internet. It was the new frontier, but now everything's been democratised. Every kid is given an iphone on there 5th bithday, and every moronic normie feels they're expert enough in every feild to give advice about it on the internet. I wonder what the next frontier to be opened up for niche hobbyists to enjoy before it gets overwhelmed with shit will be?

Say whatever about Blaha but that idiot lolcow was so entertaining in the mid 2010's

Internet culture(at least IST) wasn't particularly political before 2015-2016 outside of a vague anti establishment sentiment

      Wish it stayed that way

      >everything these days is through the lens of having the sum of human knowledge as well as all the judging eyes of people baked in.
Frick. Why can't we just go back?

      https://i.imgur.com/h79eDSK.jpg

I miss when everything wasn’t so homogeneous. Where you went to a bodybuilding/powerlifting gym and community as a newbie and felt like you had to prove yourself through results. Now you can literally make a list of 4 different archetypes of people you’d find at a gym and you could probably describe 90% of the people (anywhere) to a T. And most of them are just insular, visciously insecure people with sugar plum fairies in their heads.
I’m a somewhat early Zoomer (23) and was fortunate to catch the tail end of the era prior to social media taking over everything in fitness/lifting when I started. I remember getting pointers on form and training from older guys who competed in around the 80’s/90’s, from people who were actually passionate and actually cared, and that’s something I’ll always cherish. Now when I try to bant a little with some of the zoomie sarmgoblins, it’s like trying to talk with someone on a subway. They’re either awkwardly looking at the ground giving one word answers or scrolling through tiktok between sets, like they saw a ghost or something. Then you’ll see them go to flex in the mirror room taking pics for the rest of the time acting like they’re some alpha, the shits so fake.
There’s too many uninteresting, nothing people now. But it’s not really their fault, it’s what’s been conditioned into them from being chronically online. It just makes me wonder how many diagnosed schizoids/sociopaths there will be in 20 years compared to before the 2010’s.

holy shit zoomers having the nostalgia bug worse than millennials is crazy to me. that’s unthinkable to me. 2007-8 was basically the end of unbridled economic growth, hope for fixing the climate death spiral, and pre-corporate web (1.0). Optimism died when the great recession kicked off. Yes, the pandemic has sucked, but you’re all too young to have even really experienced a “good old days” because they ended before you all really had enough neural development to understand much about the world around you.

Things have been getting astronomically worse since then. At least in the mid 2010's there were pockets of not shit internet and troony discourse was only starting to effect the youth. It was noticeable if you knew what to look for but being so young mean't you didn't have the tools to save the people you cared about from it and the adults around you were and still are oblivious to the root cause of the problem. Now there is no solice. Video games are shit, the internet is shit, dating apps and college have turned nearly all women globally into streetprostitutes making below average women for boomers into 10/10's literally only because they're too moronic to abuse dating apps. Zoomers basically have nothing to live for but gambling their lives on the small chance they can make enough money off of crypto and be good looking enough for a non-prostitute woman which most of them aren't. Literally what do they have left? At least previous generations when faced with similar issues had community to gather and fix the problems through force. zoomers are socially moronic by design. Gen alpha is already brain dead and brown. I'll keep struggling because I still have hope but it's really hard to keep going with so little.

I think it’s just a return to the mean. The wealth that the boomers saw will never happen again. Throughout history most people were peasants

            Anonymous

No it's worse. Peasants were happy. They had God, lived either on big pieces of land or small human sized aka walkable towns, and had loving wives. Depending on the time period they even got to frick around half the year. Even a fraction of that is a luxury to most zoomers. It's hard to stay optimistic knowing that fundamentally with the things you want and need the most, literal medieval peasants had better than you, all taken away because boomers are fricking morons that think subversion is the highest moral value.

The future only guarantees the ultimate climax that past generations (boomers primarily) have been kicking down the road for decades. Every other generation had some breakthrough/frontier to look to for some hopeful optimism, zoomers have nothing but a nihilistic race to the bottom. The markers for an end of a civilization.

        >Optimism died when the great recession kicked off
No, optimism died when OWS was subverted by idpol. One of the only things a fascist, a troony, and a Black person can agree on after all is that bankers get the rope. Better to keep them all bickering amongst themselves than let them remember they have a common enemy.

No it's worse. Peasants were happy. They had God, lived either on big pieces of land or small human sized aka walkable towns, and had loving wives. Digits confirm.
Medeival life was rich with ties of community duty, and family, and it was inherently meaningful by virtue of being situated in a larger metaphysical hierarchy.
This modern age has replaced God with 'progress'. And its replaced the promise of eternal life with an egalitarian democratic paradise on earth that (they promise) will appear at the end of history when all political and social control is in the hands of a few enlightened technocrats.

No it's because you can objectively big by this following a certain amount of youtubers.
The random paper citers became a thing around 2015, aka the perfect form mongs. The reason why bodybuilding has been figured out is because these guys have been debunked by 'breaking form is ok at higher intensity'.
The bro scientists were right all along. Only now is it better documented and thus easier for everyone to follow.

It was the right wing political figure heads online in the early 2010s that helped trump get elected. They didn’t just come out of nowhere, they were around before trump started campaigning, it’s just that they saw Trump as a way to frick with the system

If you knew anything about this you would know all of the right wing e-celebs that pushed trump are banned or shadowbanned or deleted from the internet now across all the mainstream platforms since 2017-2019, all of these people started in 2010-2014 and you cannot find any of them now as they’ve all been deleted or banned

Trump was a true grassroots movement. The 2010s weren't peak anything. You were just a teenager, having formative experiences that shape your personalities to this day. Your life was filled with firsts, not yet tamped by the cynicism of seeing better things.

It was... Fine. Nothing special. Worse in some ways, powerlifting was a niche sport populated by obsessive weirdos, and then around 2010ish became a normal sport for happy(er) people. Normies were less aware that everyone very muscular (or even slightly muscular) was using steroids. Gyms hadn't yet catered to the cast population of people that like barbells.

Facebook pretty much ruined the internet because it meant that a) every normie/female was now using the internet and b) those hobby-specific forums like bodybuilding.com just morphed into facebook groups that were not-anonymous.

I miss old forum culture so much. Everything was so much funnier. I think people had less self awareness back then too and it made them do funnier shit.

Part of it was that unless you saw something on slow internet or on TV, ideas spread by word of mouth or books or news or something. You learned new tricks to do on your bike by someone telling you, not from a youtube video. same even with tricks for computer programs, or about some far-off country or thing to do. now everything is forcefed through fake bot accounts directly into our collective consciousness through our devices. it's just corporate overlords -> collective consciousness.

so things that might have felt novel back then even if they weren't, aren't novel now because we've seen and heard everything. it sounds cliche, but owen wilson (lmfao) alluded to this in the movie The Internship, where he says that google has seriously cut into his ability to bullshit, but in teh context of a romantic time out with a lady looking at the stars and having a convo. everything these days is through the lens of having the sum of human knowledge as well as all the judging eyes of people baked in.

to add to that last notion, everyone now is being filmed, recorded, etc. makes things less spontaneous. even though it might feel "dangerous" to go somewhere now without a cell phone, back then it didnt because we didnt know better. people were more aware. you had to be nice to people and have your wits about you because you could get bodybagged and no one would be the wiser. people HAD to be more genuine and how to socialize. you HAD to learn where to go for things, what to do, etc. now you can live your entire life just with your cell phone. can work digitally, order everything, learn everything, all with a few taps.

homosexual. ywn know the pleasure of going through puberty while in boarding school in the 90s, using campus LAN which was orders of magnitude faster than dialup, and posting on fit forums and being able to load pictures of ladies. then being able to work out whenever, so much free time. halcyon days before 9/11, not a care in the world. just shitpost/have fun online, everything felt like WAGMI (no IST but the forums had that WAGMI vibe), nothing online was really serious, then just enjoy

It just makes me wonder how many diagnosed schizoids/sociopaths there will be in 20 years compared to before the 2010’s.

as the tip of the spear of zoomers (circa '98) i can say without a doubt that actually looking back on archives and older posts, that the late 90s and early to mid 2000s were the golden era of internet subculture, mainly because it wasn't democratized and the only people who took an interest in online things were solely autists and people who went against the ZOG grain. Now the only corners of the mainstream internet that are hubs of some free discourse is IST (lmao ik) and maybe a few forums tucked away from sight and search engines

      Anonymous

Reddit irreparably damaged the internet subculture you’re talking about. You used to have a bunch of scattered hobbyist forums, each with its own unique identity and culture. Then Reddit consolidated everything into one site with global administration that actively ensures all subforums enforce the same SJW-type rules, thereby muttifying everything. It’s kind of a parallel of what’s been happening to the nation state in real life ever since the Cold War ended.

        Anonymous

I agree with this. I’m 38 years old. That Reddit “do you have a source for that” mentality and giving a voice to all subhumans ruined internet culture

        Anonymous

yep. I was part of the migration from Digg to Reddit sometime around 2006/2007. Back then it hadn't yet absorbed every forum on the internet outside of Boomer legacy boards (gun stuff, classic cars, etc.), but now it has. Shit, Reddit was seen as a niche thing back then, mainly used by autistic programmers. You would've NEVER heard a normie talk about it in public. Now you have fricking LA comedians talking about browsing Reddit all day. Surreal. And depressing -- because the forums it subsumed were each their own little community. You can't have communities on Reddit, but you could on a phpBB, with signatures and avatars and a member hierarchy. The only things you had to watch out for were butthole admins and rogue mods. If the mod team was solid, the forum was too.

Good-ass times. Bulletin boards were the holy middle ground between image boards and Reddit -- they had no gay updoots and downboats, so they encouraged critical thinking and long-form posts were common; but they also allowed you an identity, so you could know if you were being botted, trolled, or arguing with the local bottom-dweller who everyone liked to bully and who you suspected liked it, too. You could actually make contacts on forums -- sometimes even friends.

Anyway, I'm gay now and so is everything else. See ya folks

I’m only 30 so maybe I’m biased, but I just genuinely can’t imagine living in society where people were looking forward to the future and the average person wasn’t hellbent on numbing the pain of a lost future with nihilism, hard drugs, casual sex, overeating, etc.
