It’s really inefficient but if you enjoy spending 10+ hours a week on exercising just for the sake of it then there’s nothing really wrong with it

        Anonymous

How is it inefficient? If you can do a set of proper muscle ups on rings you're already in a better position than some fat frick benching 160kg. I spent a few months without lifting at all when I was training for.boxing a few years ago. Just did calisthenics alongside cardio. Came back to lifting after 3 or 4 months and hadn't lost any upper body strength.

It works just like regular weights if you do weighted calisthenics.

      Anonymous

its not bad at all but it can take longer to progress to harder variations of exercises and that also means gains is slower. but you could just add weight to the exercise instead of dicking about trying to learn the new progression(unless you want to learn cool looking skills that is).
i prefer mixing calisthenics with weight lifting, so for legs and shoulders i use weights and the rest is done with rings and a pullup bar. im a tall guy so i cant be arsed learning the skills to progress for pure calisthenics.

      Anonymous

Just do dips in a dip station with a bar that won’t move around. That’s calisthenics that actually matters, not this shit which trains your “balance” as well

        Anonymous

Lifting going into other areas is not a meme, anon. One day after not that many months lifting I randomly checked if I could touch my toes and I could. Just picking stuff and putting it down with a barbell gave me flexibility, no difference in weight, no nothing just sharting strenght-like training.

        Anonymous

Having a non-fixed grip helps you get that pec squeeze at the top by bringing the hands together. Just like how you'd bench with dumbbells compared to barbells.
Plus you get to move your hands to any position during the movement that agrees with your joints

      not at all
its just a bit of a meme because you cant really bulk for 90% of skill stuff and its way harder for tall guys
that said theoretically the most rewarding lifts like pull up and dips almost require zero skill or form and you can just train brute strength with them by ramping up weights
and you are basically set for uperbody with only these two

frontlevers, backlever etc are just very sport specific and are fun to train if you enjoy them
while th probably dont do all that much for a long time in term of muscles and have not a huge carry over to other stuff

that said its just super chill to go to the lake get the rings set up and do your workout after go for a swim
while i cant really think of when i acutally enjoyed going to the gym in summer with all the other morons and forced normie music in my ears

they are also cheap and skill ceiling is really high and you have years of progression ahead of you if you are into it

What do you even mean by this? I do ring pushups and dips because I get results, and also because I like them which makes them better movements since I will train them harder and be more consistent

Also at least you actually do have those numbers, still a very moronic opinion IMO since plenty of hypertrophy-oriented dudes including myself use calisthenics in their training. I wouldn't even have an option for vertical pulls if I couldn't do pullups since I train at home and don't have a lat pulldown lol

Mate I left the novice stage years ago, what are you talking about? >why rings are bad
Unless you're training to get good specifically at calisthenics on rings, they're useless, you could be doing other things if your aim is general strength or hypertrophy.
Even within calisthenics not a lot of exercises on rings have carryover.

                >calisthenics are bad
By themselves they're kinda bad. No way to hit your whole back effectively, no way to hit legs without doing a shitload of meme exercises, progressions are garbage, etc.
Hybrid lifting is the way to go.

                >why the frick would you use them yourself

                >So time to get a gym membership anon.
Do you really think I only use rings? I have a home gym and I use literally everything: I use barbells, I use dumbbells, I use rings, I use a pullup bar, I use bands (warmup/prehab/mobility), and other more obscure pieces of equipment. I only use rings for flye-pushups and dips at the moment, because I have better options for other movements, but as for these they're my top tier chest builders.
                >Unless you're training to get good specifically at calisthenics on rings, they're useless, you could be doing other things if your aim is general strength or hypertrophy.
Ring flye-pushups and dips demolish my chest better than most barbell/dumbbell movements. Flye-presses are the only thing that *might* be better, but I haven't messed around with them enough to know yet. You can just load basic calisthenics movements over time and progress that way. You will never have a small chest doing ATG pause ring dips with +40kg for 10 reps
                >By themselves they're kinda bad. No way to hit your whole back effectively, no way to hit legs without doing a shitload of meme exercises, progressions are garbage, etc.
Back I agree to an extent, they're great for lats but not as good for upper back (can do inverted rows but loading them becomes impractical past a certain point), and training your erectors is outright impossible. Again, you can use barbells, dumbbells, etc for those areas lol. As for legs, you clearly haven't worked on nordic curls very much. I've worked up to doing them weighted (currently doing +2.5kg for 6 reps on the regular version, and +10kg for 5 reps on eccentric-only) and my hamstrings are now one of my best bodyparts (that being said, I think deficit RDLs contributed more here but nordic curls certainly played a big role as well). Pendulum sissy squats are also really good for the quads, especially the rectus femoris.

                >ATG pause ring dips
Or just do paused dips on parallel bars with more weight and get better results lol. Going deep serves no purpose either except mobility.

                >As for legs, you clearly haven't worked on nordic curls
                Meme exercise, squats are better.

                >Then what's the problem?
There isn't a problem, I just think it's weird that you're shitting on calisthenics for no reason when they're great
                >Then do them. Doesn't unJUST calisthenics, though.
                ???
Resistance is resistance, calisthenics exercises are just another tool in the tool box. I mean, aren't barbell squats technically weighted calisthenics anyway? Is the king of all exercises a JUSTed lift? Makes no sense lmao
                >Or just do paused dips on parallel bars with more weight and get better results lol. Going deep serves no purpose either except mobility.
Nope, because A: stretch mediated hypertrophy (I'm actually considering swapping out my incline larsen pressing for incline db flye-presses for this reason, I barely feel anything despite optimizing the lift as much as possible while my pecs get absolutely annihilated from ring pushups and ring dips because they get stretched way more), and B: parallel bar dips rape my sternum/clavicles/shoulders while ring dips don't, so this wouldn't be an option anyway. To reinforce the first point, I did try doing parallel bar dips for a period while doing everything I could to minimize the joint stress, but after I changed to ring dips I immediately lost a lot of strength on the following exercise (the exercise being 30 deg incline larsen press), presumably because the ring dips fatigued the prime movers much more than parallel bar dips ever could. They're just better than parallel bar dips in many cases, at least for me
                >Meme exercise, squats are better.
homie are you stupid? Squats don't work the hamstrings at all, you have no fricking idea what you're talking about. At least if you compared them to hammy curls or RDLs you would have an argument since they actually hit the hamstrings, but squats do jack shit for hamstring growth. Nordic curls combined with a pure hinge (wide grip deficit RDLs, will probably stay that way) made me go from no hamstrings to my hamstrings being my best bodypart. They aren't a meme lol
