I want to take better care of my body this year and get some weight lifting equipment at home. I'll start with dumbbells and go from there. Are adjustable dumbbells a meme?

No, but it depends on the weight.
You can do db versions of bb exercises but you will eventually reach a point where it isn't possible to progress with dumbbells anymore, reasons being that not enough plates fit or you need more weight than you could possibly move with dumbbells.
Plus you will probably need to buy a bench and a pull up bar unless you plan to do floor versions of everything.

Just go to a real gym lol, you'll have everything you need then. Like the other guy said there's other things which you'll need aside from dumbbells

They aren't even expensive, if you have a job you won't even notice the monthly payment coming out

I'm unironically a nervous guy and don't want to go to a place full of people who are in immensely better shape when I don't even know proper form and have no real base to start off with. I need to build my frame right now. I'm skinny fat in the worst way. I really should just get over my hangup with caring what other people think. Did you guys learn form and technique on your own?

This is the biggest reason for you to join a real gym. Take your lumps lifting homosexual weight in public, and learn that it won't kill you.

For learning form, you can get a lot from reading and doing the movements with medium-light weight. Where you can feel some resistance, but can still do 15-20 reps. It's hard for me to describe, but you can feel when you're doing the movement right. You can tell you've got more control of the weight, and can feel more of your body contributing to the lift.

    Yes dumbbells are a meme.
Get a pull up bar and a barbell and learn the basic lifts this year. Then next year get a gym membership or invest $4000 into a home gym.

I use the bowelflex ones and they’re pretty great, but the shape makes certain exercises awkward (like tricep extensions) and some pretty much impossible (renegade row). Also I’m worried they might break in a few years which would make them not cost effective but I haven’t seen any signs yet after a year. Ignore this guy they aren’t a meme, they’re perfect for starting out and will probably be good enough unless you make lifting your life, plus they eliminate most of the safety issues at a home gym w/o a spotter. If you reach the point where you just can’t load enough weight then you’ve already got your money’s worth and will know what to do from there.

Dumbbells are more versatile and great for beginners. If you don’t want to spend like $500 on bowflex adjustables just get something like picrel with 4 10 pound 1 inch plates and 8 5 pounders to start

Do these ones look decent for the price? They come in different weight sizes. Not sure which one to get. The 60lbs dumbell pair or the one with the barbell connector? I definitely CAN'T curl 60lbs btw but I'd like to have more options.

Do I need a bench for working out at home? They make ones that fold up so they don't take up as much space, I'm just not sure if they're garbage.

I started with dumbbells in my room for 2 years then spent the last 7 years in the gym, now going back to a basic home gym setup and not missing anything

I now realise all you need is some good adjustable dumbbells, a bench, a pullup or pulldown station, and some way to load your back for hinge and squats

but you need to know what the frick you are doing, which 99.99999% of people who just buy some adjustable dumbbells absolutely do not know

you need to train intense, 3x20 1rlir, balance muscle groups accurately, and your workouts will take 2-4 hours instead of ~1 hour you would get from heavy compounds

I think I could do it all with just adjustable dumbbells, rings, and some way to load my back with at least 100kg

Which brand of adjustable dumbbells to you use? Alot of them look shitty and like they'd fall apart after a couple of years of use.

Are the cheapo Amazon ones I was looking at good for starting out?

I'd just get the 40lb pair.

I have literally no idea what kind of garbage Amazon sells

if you get these to at least 30-40kg per handle you can absolutely make gains if you actually train hard, which you are incredibly unlikely to do given the date this is being posted

Because it's New Years? Well I guess that's a valid point but if I buy a bench and weights I'm going to feel more encouraged to stick with it. I just want to look and feel good. I've become completely bored and numb to my do nothing life. What made you get IST?
