If you're depressed, work out

I only started going to the gym regularly like a month ago, but I already feel the effects of it on my mental health.

I've always had a low self esteem and never had confidence in myself. I was always unmotivated to do anything and would always procrastinate. I recognized my flaws but I hated myself because I couldn't "will" myself into instantly being good. I've seen myself as a failure constantly and was suicidal. And one day I just made myself go to the gym. I picked up a weight and copied what other people did, and used the machines randomly. I still do this to this day and I don't know if what I'm doing is working, but I stay there and use the machines for 2 hours every other day, and when I get back home and I come out of the shower I feel so much more alive. Like I'm starting fresh from a blank state. No depressive thoughts, no feeling worthless, none of that. All my motivation to do good comes back and I gain the willpower to actually make things happen. All because I went to the gym.

If you're reading this and you're depressed and don't work out, then go to the gym as soon as possible. Working out alone will make such a huge difference in your life, and all it takes is a couple of hours out of your day lifting weights.

Working out is the true redpill and key to happiness and success. Thank you IST.

Come back in 5-10 years when your brain is accustomed to lifting and it doesn't really do anything for your mental health anymore.

    I'm at that stage now.

Didn't even know you could even be at that state. Guess I'll use this opportunity to try and straighten everything out in my life before that happens then

Still works for me. I still like working out. OP next step is quitting IST of at least fit. This is The one of the shittiest, most negative boards. Idk why people supposedly trying to improve themselves try to bring others down

Yeah I'm working on cutting out unnecessary internet time from my life. I remember purging all of my social media accounts a few years ago and my life becoming better as a result. Slow and steady is best I guess.

I still like lifting, but im saying it doesn't make my brain feel that "everything is gona be okay now" like it used to in the first few years

This but unironically. If only I had realised sooner that I could just lift my feels away

I was a day away from heroing. It was a long road back but what worked was no porn, workout everyday, no trash food, drink only water, being around people, ignoring politics garbage, and focusing on what I can control. A lot of no shit stuff but if you’re in a rut change something and do something. I will never get back those lost years.

      >no trash food
This is what I'm struggling the most with at the moment. I've always drank lots of water but I have no idea how to cook, so I end up putting a chicken breast in the oven, or down shots of olive oil, or just end up eating anything to bring up my calorie take.

        >can’t cook
It’s the same as lifting. Following instructions and getting reps. Search for some recipes and techniques on yootoob, get started, and get better. I’d start with baking/roasting things in the oven. They’re like the smith machines of the culinary world.

          >It's the same as lifting
That's a good point. Better to get started somewhere than at all just like me at the gym.
I'm a college student so I'm on a limited budget, but maybe tomorrow I'll go shopping for some ingredients.

Learning to brine chicken is easy and cost effective and if you learn how to season you’ll be well into intermediate territory. Learning to cook eggs is cooking 101 and if you ever get laid a good way of bringing them back for seconds and also cheap.

You were just in another thread arguing about how to properly brine a chicken?

Yeah maybe I'll go experiment with chicken breasts, it sounds like there's a lot of potential there that I'm missing out on.
I know how to make eggs sunnyside up, as well as how to scramble em and boil em.

                >I know how to scramble
Like noobs know to squat and bench? Keep learning more about what you already know. Try for mastery young grasshopper.

Take that olive oil of yours and rub it all over the chicken you have. Than put a shit load of spices on it and let it sit for a bit. Cook it in the oven. After it's done well heck, now if you didn't put enough spices on it we get to go for some sauce ;). BBQ is my got too here. Ranch is good. Or mix it up now and than say something like brown gravy with some mashed potatoes underneath to keep the chicken tasty hehe. You get the hang of it bub

Yeah. I bought a calisthenics power tower and a treadmill recently. Because I hate myself and I hate society so much I can't even bear to leave my room. Muscular exhaustian once or twice is a good feeling to achieve within the day. The low self esteem completely goes and you start having a stake in the world again. But the catch is that you now have to schedule your life around exericise. I had never been responsible for anything because I was never given authority over my own decisions, but when I realized I had authority in this particular decision once I used my money for my own health instead of wasting it on burgers and pizza I gained a responsibility.

I don't know if I will ever be allowed by society to join in with it and I'll be granted friends and a gf through divine intervention, because I don't have authority in whether other people choose to ostracize me or not. But I do have authority over my own body now that I have my minimal equipment, and it's extremely easy to stand up for myself since I'm not walking all over myself in depression every day. I don't take shit from anything passively and it's not even a conscious effort. I never imagined I would have ever been able to gain a sense of pride in my entire life especially coming from an abusive childhood.

This I can relate to. I've never been used to having responsibilities throughout my life so whenever I get responsibilities my natural reaction is to get stressed out thinking about it. I guess once I get used to having a responsibility I'll feel less stressed about it and I can start holding more responsibilities.

Can’t workout because I’m a rager. Idk what happens but it makes me ridiculously more aggressive towards people so I had to cut it out. Can’t even do cardio without the same result. What’s going on with me?

Your an alcoholic. It's ok I am too (32 days sober) I'm just getting back into lifting myself. I think it will have the opposite effect and relax me after my workout

Seconded, working out is the single most effective counter to depression that I've found (and that's after various flavours of therapy, medication, etc.)

    Take that first step.
