Could plunges are great. Do them in the morning to spike that cortisol.
        Better than coffee.
        Increase T.

Don't constrict your blood flow after exercise.

It's not the calories. It's the additional Cortisol from the plunge. It's also why doing too much cardio will kill your gainz.

        >cortisol
It's the fact that cold reduces inflammation by preventing blood flow to the area. When you put an ice pack on a wound, it stops the blood from getting to the wound, making it heal slower.
Same mechanism for muscle growth. By reducing blood flow with cold temperatures you're reducing muscle growth.

Cold plunges are only good if you sit in them for an hour or something.

Studies that were made shows an exponential curve to the benefitial effects. Short ones did basically nothing.

What it most likely does is hardening the veins, prepping them to withstand harder pressure.

What's there to be confused about? You reduce swelling and blood circulation intensity

it improves recovery by reducing inflammation. inflammation is one of the mechanisms behind muscle growth. NSAIDs also probably reduce muscle growth despite speeding up recovery. Good practical advice is just to not employ these sorts of things unless (a) you need to reduce inflammation to be recovered enough for work or something enjoyable in your life outside of the gym or (b) you're not going to be recovered enough for your next gym session without it. (The extra stimulus you get from hitting the gym is probably more important than whatever marginal gains are left after a day or two of recovery without treating inflammation)

Dude we literally had a thread about this last night just fricking look at the catalog newbie.

    Cold reduces inflammation (reduces plasma)
    Heat increases inflammation (increases plasma).
You are reducing the swelling of inflammation necessary for your muscles to repair themselves efficiently.

  15. 1 month ago

I never understood why people would want to reduce inflammation after a workout. Its literally your body's response to muscle damage to remove waste and supply the area with nutrients to repair the damage.
I really don't understand sports scientists when it came to this very obvious contradiction for muscle recovery.

I can see it having benefits it you are a sports athlete and you need to quickly recover for a game the next day or something. So the practice picked up steam in those circles, then weight lifters just copy pasted without realizing it isn't useful for their goals or needs

Also morons like Joe Rogan started hard shilling it cause it feeds his need for machismo

The same thing could be said about stretching too. So many athletes and sports scientists suggest to stretch before working out despite the fact all studies show it does nothing for injury prevention but it actually reduces force output during some physical activity.
Stretching should be done after a workout or during recovery period.

Dubs of truth. Cold is good if you're an in season athlete for example. Cold is bad if you're trying to get as big or strong as possible (ie any sort of muscular adaptation). It closes the anabolic window.

sounds like bs to me. your joints have an even harder time getting the good shit flowing into them than your muscles do.
so how would icing them help them?

cryotherapy is for when you're a professional athlete that just played a game and you have to get on a plane and go play another game tomorrow without feeling fricked up and sore.

I've heard about it before, the nuance that's missing here is that cold showers in general are as good as you think they are, any moment except right after a workout, it decreases inflamation pretty much the only time you don't want to. But honestly, if you are gonna go out of your way to take cold showers might aswell go all the way and start doing contrast therapy for recovery.
