Indoor Rock Climbing

Are Indoor Rock Climbing gyms IST approved? What kinda physique will I have if I go rock climbing regularly instead of lifting weights? I'm 6'0" 160lbs, somewhere between ottermode and skinnyfat.

          Doesn't happen if climbing statically. Also doesn't happen when rope climbing. Indoor rope climbing is much safer than indoor bouldering

          Most climbs have a auto tension thing that won't allow you to hit the ground hard enough to do any of that.

            you're talking about an auto belay wall; this is on a bouldering wall where there are no ropes. IMO routesetters fricked up by putting a dyno at the very top of the comp route; high risk moves like that should probably be at the start of the climb, not at the top where things can go wrong.

                he had a shit ton of rotational force from jumping outwards from the wall and swinging briefly from the top hold. Ankle injuries are actually some of the most common injuries in a bouldering gym because of bad falls that involve rotation. I had a minor ankle sprain back in 2021 and it was from a fall in a cave feature in a gym; the height of the fall couldn't have been more than 5 feet onto the pads, but my right ankle made contact with the ground on the side in a really unpredictable way.

      if you're fat, you'll not be able to do much of it at all and you'll just be fat and stop going
      if you're skinny, you'll get shredded forearms but you'll be like 90lbs soaking wet. which unironically works better at trying to get women anyway

    it's fun, it's a nice way to meet people, and it will keep you moderately interesting when talking to strangers.

    As for physique, it won't be anything special except for your calves and forearms. Don't quit the gym just yet.

    i climb. i can climb after a full lifting session and running a 5k and only be slightly hampered. climbing really doesnt give you a good 'workout' in the sense that it will totally burn your muscles out. youll get basically the body you have but a slightly bigger back and good forearms. you should do other stuff if you want to climb and look good.

    I is a very good workout, but you will have to do some additional strength training.

    To avoid injury you need to train the muscles used less while climbing (antagonist training). The triceps, chest etc.

    To improve beyond a certain level you also need to train vertical and horizontal pulling: inverted rows and pullups, preferably one arm pullups. You can progress to one arm pullups by holding onto a rubber band in the hand not used for the pullup for some extra help.

    You also need to train finger strength. This means forearm muscles, tendons and pulleys (these take a loooong time to improve, several years in fact).

    And then you also need core stength and flexibility.

    If you do all this, you can get very fit as a climber. I bet most people on this board can't do a one arm pullup

    climbing is fun and you can get to an enjoyable level without any climbing specific strength training. there is a lot of technique. but eventually you hit a celling that can only be broken with climbing specific strength.

    Anyone who lifts should have at least 1 or 2 real physical hobbies and climbing is a good one. It's fun to do solo and with other people, and it's even fun to bring women there on dates

    Quite fun. I started recently and go like once or twice per month.
    I do a lot of pull ups so it translates well into climbing but still, shit is hard when you don't know the technique.

    bouldering is a fun workout and it's also a way to train how to get over your fears, some boulders you can only top after visualizing a lot and controling the voice in your head screaming that you'll fall off and die

    Climbing regularly will build your upper body, arms and shoulders but you will still need to strengthen your legs since you use them a lot in climbing, but not in a way that builds muscle. I go to a bouldering focused gym which means it’s more focused on shorter stronger climbs and dynamic movements, when you do more rope climbing it’s more based on endurance

    I love auto-belays and belaying with a partner so much it’s insane. Bouldering is pretty cash too but I like doing mini speedruns up an auto-belay wall and lifting myself up through sheer strength

      Bouldering gyms are good places to meet women. Rope climbing not so much because you have to go with friends. But you need to actually be semi decent at it or you will just be seen as cringe.

      Imagine if all you did was pullups/muscle ups That's your physique. Climbing can be part of a balanced breakfast, but it shouldn't be all you eat. Throw in a couple pushup variations, ab exercises, and cardio (running, jump roping, cycling) and you will have a good physique and be very coordinated.

      I just deadlifted for the first time in years two weeks ago and was shocked at how much better my grip during the lift got just from climbing. Years ago when I was more of a noob, I would have had to switch to mixed grip at 1.5pl8 just to do working sets of 2.5pl8, but this time, I was able to build up to 3pl8 easily and do it with a normal double overhand grip. I still suck ass at CoC grippers so I really don't know where this extra grip strength is coming from.

    Unironically, the hardest workout I've ever done was at a climbing gym.
    That will get your cardio going REAL fast.
    But the physique isn't that great on its own. Don't quit the gym.

    Climbing Gyms are full of decent looking women as a bonus FYI

    I took this cute asian girl to the rock gym on sunday. We had a great date and she was all over me.
