The one and only "pinned to the X" straight edge kid i have met was an old coworker at a gym I use to work at. He was pretty IST. He always had a new gf and would always tell me about how they would frick. He covered for me when I brought my gf at the time over to the gym and fricked her in the break room.

Straight Edge people are usually the egotistical type. Normal people will just tell you they prefer to stay sober & not make it a personality.

I like weed. I don’t really like Coke, but it should be legal to defund the bad guys in SA. Psychedelics need to be a birthright amount men. I used to love prescription painkillers, but fentanyl fear has ruined all pills and powders for me.

People who knowingly sell fentanyl deserve the life/death penalty & I admire Texas and California lawmakers for trying to pave the way for that legislation.

I smoke weed. Straight edge people are very annoying to be around. It's fine if you're sober but if someone has their life together, telling them to not have a vice is arrogant narcissism. The only time someone sober should offer that kind of advice or help is when someone's life spirals out of control. I only smoke weed and during the summer I'll do a psychedelic. Don't touch alcohol or go for any pills. People who start drugs as a teenager before they develop any real hobbies, interests or goals, are the ones who go to hard shit. Others spend all day smoking weed, drinking or both and think it's okay because they're just entry level. Alcoholism will kill you and smoking all day long makes you moronic and slow. I smoke every day and I'm very hard on the stance that it's the user not the drug. The user chooses when and where to do the drug, if they have no self control it'll ruin them. I don't think drinking every day is good because it's extra calories so I'd never do it, but if someone is only doing it when the day is over and they handled their shit its NBD. Daily drinking fricked up most of my friends but they smoke every day and are fine, they aren't IST.

Am I missing something? I thought straight-edge just meant sober.

        >I thought straight-edge just meant sober.
It's been 25 years since I've heard anyone use the term, I thought it straight edge had faded away entirely. But back then, it was definitely didn't just mean "sober". Straight edge is more like trying very hard to be cool and edgy and hardcore BUT also taking strong and usually conspicuous moral stance against the drugs and alcohol typically associated with counter-culture activity. It's kind of a counter-counter culture rather than just not being counter culture in the first place.

Not now but I was straight edge for a long time. Freshman year of HS til 23 or so. I used to booze a bit when I was 12-13, almost got caught one time. This was when my dad really started to get abusive and drank much more. The friends I drank with also broke into my house and stole a bunch of stuff. So, around that time was my last drink til, again, 23. I didn’t know what straight edge was until 17-18 when I started getting into hardcore. The music helped me get through some things. And a lot of what I learned from it then, I still use today.

has one way to look at it. He’s not wrong but there are levels to it. For me it was about sobriety, no drinking/ no drugs outside of needing them. Some people avoid drugs altogether. Other people added no sex outside of a relationship.

Some people are overly militant about it. A friend of mine in cali was a smoker, some edge lord took her cig and put it out on her arm at a show. That person caught a prompt beating.

I was never militant about it. For me it was a personal choice. For others it was about being a Look At Me. If people were drinking around me I was fine with it, same with cigs. If people smoked weed I walked away for a little.

I've personally practiced it off and on over my lifetime.
I was pretty well involved into the hardcore scene in the UK until I left.
Had a lot of friends who were edge too, but obviously now we're all old and indont think anyone kept it up.
Still very much in love with the music and the movement too, although, it can be extremely cringe at times.
But tlddr; no but was, but now occasionally have a drink or smoke a spliff. but seldom.

      >The user chooses when and where to do the drug, if they have no self control it'll ruin them.
This, I've done every recreational drug besides fent/benzos and never made a habit out of anything besides stimulants. I just wanted to experience them for myself and find out the reality instead of just hearing propoganda or hype.

My conclusion is that the effects of nearly every drug are much better than you'd expect, but also much less exciting. The mystery of why psychedelics produce the hallucinations they do is infinitely more interesting than the actual trips themselves for example. Same thing with opiates, experiencing the revelation that you can feel absolute comfort and serenity from a drug first hand is much more impactful than the actual feeling it gives you if that makes any sense.

Straight edgers and teetotalers are cringe. There is absolutely nothing wrong with abstaining from drug use and it's a respectable life choice, but if you haven't done the drugs then you don't know shit and shouldn't speak on it beyond stating your preference for abstinence and leaving it at that.

40+ year old here. Any individual who values their physical fitness will avoid addictive substances, taking a practical stance rather than a dubious ethical stance. Smoking and drinking both decrease your testosterone significantly, as well as negatively affecting every single biological process in your body. If you are somebody who only smokes cigars on Xmas with the family and only drinks at weddings, you should experience basically no tangible side effects long-term. Other than that, stay out of bars and clubs the same way you would want to stay out of prison or the hospital or the graveyard. You wouldn't do 3x10 of Poison Sips at the gym, would you OP? Think of every sip of alcohol and every puff of nicotine or drugs as an enormous loss of progress. The more you do it, the worse it gets. The older you get, the more exponential the negative effects.

Caffeine & aspirin are perfectly fine for preworkout, but you shouldn't overdo caffeine and you should only drink caffeine 90 minutes after you first wake up. Don't rely on coffee or any type of caffeine for energy or hypertrophy long-term.

I am. Simply because I dont see the benefit of drugs or alcohol. I eat right and exercise so I have energy. And I practice Zen so Im basically always at peace and depressed or anxious, or stressed. So I have no need to "take the edge off." And Im funny af sober so I have no need to drink to be able to socialize. tl;dr drugs are a crutch and if you're good enough no crutches are needed.

Yea been clean for 5 years now
I dont tell people that though, i just say i feel better sober. Usually have no issues unless i get the odd hippie who takes it as an opportunity to lecture me about being able to let go of my ego and insecurities or whatever

Fortunately the more i age the less common that situation comes about.

I abstain from all the things 'straight edge' gays do but don't feel the need to put a stupid label on it. I also don't take caffeine.

I have been for 13 years, I used to drink and smoke in high school then decided to in my senior year. Both my parents and some grandparents struggled with addiction so its probably for the best.
I don't ever bring it up though because I don't really care what anyone else does, drinking and drugs are fun but not for me, I used to draw big X's on my hands with sharpie before school and I cringe thinking about that now.

I was in highschool, and I can say without any hesitancy that I regret trying drugs and alcohol; personally, most of them set me back years in life and many, many of my friends who weren't edge and started partying young are now experiencing major health problems. Nothing matches hardcore punk in terms of sheer emotional intensity, either.

Yes, however, I do not call myself “straight-edge.” What I tell people is that I swore a religious oath with my friend a couple of years ago, and I haven’t had a drop since (this is all true, btw.) When I don’t feel like telling them that, I state that my mother was an alcoholic, and my gf doesn’t like drinking. This will get most people off your case.
