bmi is surprisingly accurate despite all of the attempts to discredit it as a general guideline. chances are if you are high you're fat and if you're low you are underweight. to be bmi overweight at a low bodyfat is something only very advanced lifters can achieve and the usual person claiming this is actually just fat. try and get to <13% bodyfat and >25bmi as a natty lifter. it will take 5+ years unless you are a manlet. guys usually claiming this are actually >20-25% bodyfat, aka fat.

Is BMI a meme or do I really need to weigh 160lbs as a 5'9" male?

yeah this, despite all the coping there's a reason health practitioners still use it. What people don't understand is that it's an ESTIMATE, but the other side of that that people don't understand is the reason the range of acceptable BMIs is so large (like 18-25 IIRC) is exactly because it's an estimate. If you are above 25BMI and not an elite natural lifter or on roids you are probably overweight even if its marginal. The problem is being fat is so normalized in our society that people who are overweight are considered "skinny" to the majority of people. But you can have like 21BMI and be really skinnyfat and have over 20% bodyfat, you can also be an elite lifter and have 25BMI at 15% bodyfat, it really just depends.

That being said you shouldn't take it as an absolute and you should just go look in the fricking mirror instead.

      t. 5'9" 170lbs and like 22-23% bodyfat trying to lose it.

Yeah, BMI is surprisingly accurate if you don't lift. Yeah, I get that it's meant for untrained homies, but even with that caveat it's amazing how it_just_works.
That said, it doesn't take much to 'break' it. Topped off newbie gains + big/heavy frame + high-ish BF% (16-18%) will land you around 26-28 BMI.

If you are 6'0 or up you need to be over 200lbs to reach those bmi levels, you are telling me that reaching that size at ~17%bf was easy? As a natty?

          no, I'm a DYEL cardiogay.

          >easy
I didn't say easy. 3 years of serious lifting will get you there. at my height (188cm) that's 7kg of lean mass over my "skater kid who does some pushups every now and then" weight (85kg).

I know another kid exactly my height and he's 97kg (put on some weight due to psych meds) but somehow looks just average. he can't do pullups now though kek

My BMI is 32 and technically obese. I am 235(20-25%bf) @ 5'10" and can run 5k in27 minutes. I wrestle a lot with ppl 6 days a week and do some yoga.

I feel great but i dont look that great. My dick looks tiny in comparison to my thighs and waist.

I was in this mode for a few years. cutting was the best thing I ever did. didn't realize it but I had developed sleep apnea. all of my heart metrics improved a lot when I finally cut and I also just feel way better and lighter on my feet. since you wrestle it's maybe not an option for you but if I could go back I would have cut way sooner.

160 as 5,9 is actually skinny fat unless you are lean and put on muscle. At that height, total weight should be 140 to 150.

Pic rel is 5'9. Depending on your muscle mass and bodyfat, it could be less or it could be more. But 160lbs is pretty reasonable yeah. 140 is also reasonable. So is 150. And so is 170. More than that, you are just fat/roids.

  11. 2 months ago

It's a good question. BMI assumes "average" muscle mass but what is that exactly? I assume it means mostly sedentary in which case those of us who lift should have little regard for BMI.

NTA and not any of these posters but 20 BMI is pretty tiny, like no muscle.

I don’t consider myself big at all and I’d have to drop 24 lbs to get to 20 BMI.
