    >what is developmental vs non-developmental sports
Developmental sports success is attributed in majority to training for example olympic weightlifting and powerlifting (60% development, 40% innate). The soviets dominated these sports because their training protocols were far superior (idealogical motivations). Non-developmental sports are majority predetermined by genetic athletic ability (>60% innate). Examples of this are track and field events. Anyone observing high level track and field training knows how poor the work ethic is.

Bodybuilding is not a sport. It is a male beauty contest and i am here for it.

      Seriously?

Yes. This is explicit in soviet training literature. If you lack certain predetermined attributes (% fast twitch muscle, ligament attachment points, things of this nature) then you can never succeed beyond a certain level of competition in non-developmental sports. The disadvantage to is too large.

Give me a rundown on Soviet training science?

        Anonymous

Go read the many books on the subject. Louis Simmons writing is insightful too. I am lucky to have had conversations with soviet sports program coaches, who escaped the collapse. They coached track and field for the national olympics team. Achieved very good results.

Is their training methods similar or quite different to conventional methods?

            Anonymous

Yes. Soviet sports program had physicists, psychologists, biologists, statisticians and many other professions working to produce a meaningful improvement in sports performance. Many different conclusions and prescriptions compared to that of the western world. Approach is much more outcome focused and holistic. Its comical talking to high level coaches in western world, example womens national soccer coach thinking strength training is detrimental to soccer performance. Domestic national level snowboarders/ skiiers having a 100% Achilles tendon tear rate. Western oly lifters focusing mostly on technique and not absolute strength like ex-soviet bloc, russia and china.

Wrestling, specifically Greco-Roman wrestling, is by far the sport that produced the highest and most developed athlete. It is a perfect combination of explosiveness, endurance, power, strength and flexability there is, put into a format of raw combat. If you want to talk about athleticism, there it is par excellance. If you throw balls for "sport", lower your tone when you speak to me.

Wrestling is noted in soviet literature to be about 50/50 developmental vs innate ability at the elite level. There is a high level of physicality to wrestling, so you must have both to a high degree. It is no accident that Aleksandr Karelin born as he was, trained as he did and performed as he has.

Aleksandr Karelin is noted to be one of the first elite wrestlers to train both wrestling and weightlifting concurrently. Previously it was thought to be too demanding for athletes to recover from wrestling training alone. The difference in absolute strength is a huge contributing factor to Mr Karelins success and why he alone at the time was able to utilise the Karelin lift. After his dominance it is not uncommon for wrestlers at all levels to utilise weightlifting in increase athletic attributes
