Is ddr good cardio?

I wanted to do some cardio but running on a treadmill is boring and I can't go jogging because the roads are frozen, but my laptop still has stepmania installed and I have an old ddr pad. Is it good cardio, does it count as HIIT?

You can just do endurance mode I think. It keeps playing song after another without pause, pretty cool feature.

I mean, have you played DDR on any advanced difficulty? It will kick your ass, assuming you can even keep up. It's one thing to do it on keyboard, but none of that will translate to moving well on your feet. You will be soaked in sweat after about 20 minutes if you're actually playing difficult songs.

I used to play it, I remember being getting really sweaty and out of breath while doing 8 footers, but I was fat then and in better shape now so idk.

absolutely. I used to do this when I had to cut weight for wrestling in high school. it's also fun and if you're ever near an arcade or anywhere that has a machine you can play and people will be like
    >wow look at that guy go!

Man I wish arcades were still a thing, playing ddr with friends was so cool.

same. just being reminded of DDR brings back happy memories like almost nothing else can. If I ever end up in NJ again I know they have a few.

keep an eye out - I see DDR machines in random places sometimes. I played with my ex in this little arcade in a mall earlier this year. However I also went to cedar point and their arcade didn't even have it, which made me sad.

I looked online and on foot but I live in a smaller town so no luck, zero arcades, there are gaming bars but most of them just have a couple of pc's and consoles plus guitar hero if you're lucky.

DDR at higher difficulties is fun as frick and also good cardio, it’s unironically the thing that turned my life around in my teens and made me go from borderline obese to normal weight. With some practice I think anybody can get to the level where they’re playing 13 footers like below (intermediate benchmark) and at that point there’s a good chance you’re hooked

How do difficulties work by the way? Is that song a 13 footer on stepmania 5 or on the classic? Because from what I've looked up and 8 footer on stepmania 5 is a 12-13 footer on arcade.

I'm only really familiar with the DDR scale, not familiar with stepmania difficulties. DDR was out of 10 in the games released up until ~2008 and has been out of 20 ever since.

What was once considered a 10 footer is now between a 15-20 depending on how hard the song is (before the shift, there was a huge amount of variation in the difficulty of 10 footers so you could be playing something that's just "pretty tough" or the literal hardest song in the game). What was once a 9 footer is usually a 13 or 14 footer now; what was once an 8 footer is like an 11 or 12.

As a general rule of thumb, I think it's fair to say that if you take the difficulty out of 10 and multiply it by 1.5, you have a good estimate of what the difficulty out of 20 is (with the exception of the high end 10 footer songs which are now 17, 18, 19)

They don't. After supernova konami decided to frick with all the values and boosted the ratings on all their old songs.

Most of the stepmania songs run on the old scoring though, which is a 1-10, with 10 approaching physical limits for what can be played cleanly. (For anyone who isn't a cardio athlete/runner).

Just use the step count and try the songs. They're short, it doesn't take long to find out if something is a challenge for you or not.

The best cardio is any cardio you will actually do, and DDR hits the mark better than any cardio I've ever done.

Just don't cheat yourself as you improve at the game by shortening your motions to the minimum. The game can be played very efficiently, and that kind of efficient play is needed on some of the custom songs. You're cheating yourself with that kind of play on the easier songs.

    >Does it count as HIIT

It can. For me it's the only kind of cardio that I can actually get myself to push to a failure point. Any other less stimulating activity I put too much focus on how shitty I feel and don't push through. I will push through trying to beat a song I've never completed before.

Yeah I don't really like doing the super efficient songs, my favourites are always the songs that involve a lot of jumping, lots of doubles and stuff.

High knees, unnecessary jumps, tempo steps, goofy shit with your arms. If you can afford the effort on a song then do it. I've got warm up favorites I'll never stop playing, just have to add shit on to keep it relevant for fitness.
