Why does the research on it ranges from saying that it's as harmless as water with salt, to saying that it can give beetus the same way that regular soda?

Aspartame has been so heavily studied and people have been drinking diet coke for long enough that we should be seeing correlation by now, which we don't. The only thing they proved is don't drink 5 gallons of diet coke a day.
Aspartame is literally just a dipeptide with a methyl-ester on it. If it was even possible to be harmful then life wouldn’t be possible as we know it.
If someone has PKU, which you’re tested for - then maybe there is some concern for that very rare person.

Otherwise the big concern is the modification to your gut microbiome - this needs more data, but what we have seen so far is that it changes your flora to a bacteria that is more reliant on getting nutrients from other typically insignificant metabolic sources and your TDEE would hypothetically go down - making it easier for you to gain weight, but still the calories you avoid from drinking sugar water outweigh the decrease of your TDEE from changing your flora.
Final note: your flora would only change if you drink this more than water - so maybe if you have a button to press and someone will bring you in a Diet Coke.
Betus comes from not rationing portions and forcing up your blood sugar so if you eat 3 meals a day with a diet soda, you'll get betus wayyyy sooner than the person drinking water due to the caffeine with the meal.
You can skirt this by eating low carb while continuing to drink your pisswater
It's all but impossible to pin down causes of shit like that because fatties won't be honest and exercise can pretty much cure/prevent anything
So you can go full Super Size Me + exercise and be generally healthy or you "eat healthy" (diet processed meals like healthy choice) and diet soda and still get diabetes

Bros... I quit drinking coke zero last year when they went woke... but I just discovered the aldi knock-off diet coke and keep drinking it.
I know the can is lined with fricking BPA but it's sooooooo good.
I think I need to go back to wasting money on packs of pellgrino to try to get me off.

this one is true and is the ONLLY problem with all carbonated drinks and even more so with sodas and diet sodas. Acidity is bad for teeth, bone, hair and probably a couple more things.
That being said our body has a great way to get rid of acidity so it is really more of a local problem (teeth).
Teeth ignore acidity better if they are regularily treated with fluoride, the F ions embed themselves in the hydroxyapatite and protect the mineral from acidic corrosion.
This is all based on current research I'm not saying that we have answers to everything but we have quite a bit of data on all of this since they are really items and foods of everyday life.
Nutrition-wise there's nothing that bad about it. Like yes it's acidic so it might mess with gut flora but whatever. Anecdotally, I've found that the sweetness from it seems to encourage me to seek out more sugars. Like you get addicted to the sweet flavor which then causes you to eat worse in other parts of your diet.

Walmart has a really good diet sams choice that is caffeine free that tastes like pepsi. Helps me so much since I’m super sensitive to caffeine
