Dumbbell, and it’s not even close.

The more stable you are on a movement the more gains you can make.
DB are unstable but give you more depth and stretch and therefore more gains, but are unstable.
BB is stable but limits your depth more, because the bar can't go below chest and the elbows can't go below parallel.

Also the real answer is decline push-ups with a hold in the bottom position.

The limited depth and stretch isn't outweighed by the extra stability though. A unilateral chest press machine is superior for muscle growth due to this.

Dumbbell or machine chest press. Flat bench is an absolutely garbage chest builder.

I agree that a chest press machine will always be better because you can milk it better at the bottom in a safe way, but not every gym has a chest press machine and some anon have a home gym.

Very true. Not every gym has a barbell for benching either or dbs heavy enough to really matter. Just discussing varying options for the sake of the OP question.

That safely hitting the stretch at the bottom is definitely the secret though. Can be done with DBs too so long as you aren't ego lifting like crazy but the stabilization of a machine definitely helps make it slightly safer

also barbell bench is indisputably the most fun to do. machines don't compare to the enjoyment you get from barbell compounds.

What's the best exercise and rep range for chest doms? It seems that heavy lifts in the 6-8 range for bench press and incline bp don't do it for me.

12-20 with a very slow negative and a deep stretch at the bottom. Frick barbell bench unless you're using a cambered bar.

Best exercise? Flies. Incline bench work hits good for me too though.

He deserves his injury. Especially since his gym looks like it has an isolateral press machine.
