          I'll never go back to eating all fruit/raw vegs, I think that's a mistake, but I might end up doing something close at some point for health, energy AND aesthetic reasons, as I get older.       No, "overeating" isn't the problem. The problem is what causes overeating. Overeating is a symptom. If you eat a low carb diet, you actually don't want or need to eat more than you actually need, because you don't get the serious hunger desires you get on a high carb diet. When you eat lots of carbs, the exact opposite of what should happen does happen - you get HUNGRIER the next day or whatever. This is because hunger is fricked up by the insulin response from carbs.

            You are both wrong. Potatoes have exactly the same negative effects as white bread or whatever you consider highly processed. Potato has one of the highest glycemic indexes, and either way it is irrelevant because the more carbs you eat, the more glycemic load you take on. Whether it is refined or not only has an advantage in the sense that you are eating more fibre, which you could just do by eating fibre separately after eating the processed food, and still isn't enough to offset the carbs.

    Obesity is an illness caused by a Western diet. And Western diets are carb-rich. It's not the carbs per se though, it's the processed nature of the carbs and the fats.
    It's way harder to get fat if there is no flour, sugar, nor seed oils in your diet. And the "food pyramid" with its huge grain base (and reliance on wheat, corn (syrup), and seed/söy oils) doesn't help people make healthy choices.

      I mean it's kind of true because morons get fat so easily. But it's also the case for everyone that if they are surrounded by their favorite foods constantly then they will overeat.
