is it possible that some people really cant have their abs to be showing no matter how lean they are? or maybe they simply didnt try enough?

Looks like your typical machine lifter. Arms look weak compared to his chest. Minimal quad development. Almost no serratus. Limited ab development likely due to using the ab crunch machines.
This is not to meme and say "squats are all you need for abs", but neglecting your compounds makes it more difficult to get stronger core development. He could also probably cut down a bit more.

No it’s not true. Some morons fall for the “you don’t need to train abs because compounds will train them enough”
meme and have almost no rectus development so they need to be at lower levels of body fat to show any abs (<8%).

There is a reason all mens physique guys train abs regularly, many open bodybuilders as well, Chris Bumstead, Terrance Ruffin, almost everyone who has decent abs in bodybuilding trains them directly. The guy who does the compounds only is the same guy who has the washed out abs on stage.

Lots of guys have underdeveloped abs because they didn’t train them and then think it’s genetics as opposed to realizing it’s because they literally haven’t trained them.

so is there hope for everyone if they want a 6pack or no??

        Anonymous

There isn't. Some people just don't have good ab genetics, but you won't know until you reach substantial training times (e.g. 1+ years). I'm just pointing out why OP's pic is not a good example to use.

Start training abs regularly and don’t believe compounds will give you and.

          >t. morons
If youre lean enough, your abs will show, unless you are so sedentary that you literally have zero muscle on your core. Ive only known one guy who was rail thin without abs. Do your compounds. Heavy deadlift, row, ohp especially, will leave you with a beautiful core. Do not waste your time doing sit ups and nonsense. I spent 3 years bulking and doing a lot of ohp, and when i cut down I had the most beautiful set of serratuses known to man

            Anonymous

            >unless you are so sedentary that you literally have zero muscle on your core
You need more muscle than you think. I cut down to about 11% recently, and my ab definition was shit because I was totally dyel. Advice like this is true for people who have at least a few months of training under their belt, otherwise complete skinnyfat dudes just waste their time cutting with nothing to show.

              Anonymous

sounds like your'e a guy who's so sedentary that you have zero muscle on your core. You shouldn't even be cutting as an untrained person for aesthetics. You should cut just to get all the fat off so you can start putting mass on. Of course youll have nothing to show. Skinnyfat - Fat = skinny

                Anonymous

                >You shouldn't even be cutting as an untrained person for aesthetics
Exactly. I shouldn't have cut, I should have focused on recomp for this period, which is what I'm doing now.
The point is that noobs listen to morons like Doucette who repeatedly spout "if you can't see your abs, you're fat" and so they default to cutting first, which hinders their muscular progress longer than necessary.
On the same token, some dudes have shitty ab genetics and despite cutting down, never really get a 6 pack look, and may wind up with great lower ab vascularity but a 4 pack. It's not to excuse a lack of cutting and not putting in effort, it's a realistic aspect genetics affecting aesthetics.

                Anonymous

You still did the right thing. Recomp is a meme. If youre skinnyfat either cut then bulk, or bulk then cut. Greg doucette says that because most fat people think theyll get abs from doing sit-ups, when their only hope is fork-putdowns. Its true some people have the arnold 4pack for life, but you can still have a sick 4pack and some shredded serratuses.

                Anonymous

dude cutting then lean bulking or vice versa is way faster than recomping, it's common knowledge you have to do one or the other to lose weight or gain muscle.

                Anonymous

                >way faster than recomping
Not really. Its way faster in getting overall physique changes, but not necessarily in a good or bad way. Lean bulk, you'll inevitably look bigger, but you'll still put on fat unless you're on an almost negligible surplus. 300 calorie surplus will still eventually warrant a cut, and by the time you reach the end of the cut, you're likely looking at the same time you would for a recomp. For those in the beginner to early-intermediate strength levels (where I am after coming back from a long lifting break), the time difference isn't significant.

can you show me some evidence of someone actually recomping as a natty, if it was a thing everybody would be doing it

                Anonymous

can't gain muscle & put on strength(unless you're a complete beginner) unless you're in a surplus. Currently in maintenance and scraping out the same reps everyday.

Completely disagree. If anything he looks like your typical moronic ‘just train for strength’ guy populating this board and Reddit. Disproportionately large legs, no arms, chest is somewhat developed but not aesthetic, no shoulders. And you guys are all morons his abs are in direct sunlight they’re not even that bad

Do machines really mess you up? I couldn’t afford $40 a month for LA fitness due to moving out of my parents house soon, so I bought a Planet Fitness membership. I’m cutting back all costs as much as possible until I get into my apartment. Am I really fricking myself here even if I do compounds on the smith machines?

I plan on going back to LA fitness once my finances are in order.

This. Abs are made in the gym, but revealed in the kitchen. If you’re at high bf you won’t see much progress training them, but getting to low bf without training them will leave you disappointed. Find balance.
