Eat 1200 kcal and lift. Caffeine/nicotine(obviously don't smoke) to get you through your workouts. 1g/lb of lean mass for protein.
You WILL catabolize muscle without lifting, your body has zero reason to carry around expensive mass when you're starving.
If you're 20%+, you will almost certainly gain strength / some muscle while cutting.
I did exactly what OP is talking about. I did moronic powershitter programs with bare minimum volume (531 BBB) for like 2 years, gained some muscle but a lot of fat, did nothing for a year and a half, then dieted hard for 4 months and lost 40 pounds. I have no idea how much muscle I've lost but I don't look completely dyel, except in areas I was always dyel because of those powershitter programs like my arms. My chest, lats, front delts, quads, and calves are larger than at any point in my life when I was skinny. I was eating 1200 calories a day, barely 75g of protein, and almost always OMAD. So I think this talk of your muscles getting catabolized immediately isn't true. But I have no real way of knowing how much muscle I truly lost (or even had in the first place since it was all covered by fat.)
