>is realizing the divinity of yourself through direct experience worth it >is becoming free from suffering worth it
Yes, it's worth it. I will never stop pushing the meditation-pill. The benefits, both mentally and spiritually, cannot be overstated
It's like working out, you'll only start seeing results after a long time of consistency. It's also possible you were just dicking around mentally and didn't know what you were doing, like when you first start lifting and have terrible form. Also, I'd suggest looking into systems like Buddhism or Advaita Vedanta to start really understanding what's going on and see meditation's true use. But that's only if you're interested in the nature of reality.
You may have been expecting the wrong stuff. It’s like incels who lift and don’t get b***hes and say lifting was a waste of time. No lifting a not a waste it just doesn’t magically get u any b***hes. Meditation won’t make you more money directly either or some shit like that.
Considering its been co opted by psych users and new age hippies probably not. If you wanna go sit under a tree be my guest, but don't tell me how you saw god or some shit.
the true acute benefit from meditation is being able to enter a state of relaxation on a moment's notice
If you don't suffer from anxiety or panic attacks, you probably won't get much out of it unless you really dedicate yourself to it to reap the long term benefits.
It's hard to talk about meditation because there are so many different forms of it that are dramatically different from one another. It's like talking about "fitness" and you have one guy that competes in powerlifting and another person who does yoga once a week for 15 minutes. Everybody just refers to meditation as one collective entity without any further elaboration on what specific type of meditation they are practicing.
As for whether it's worth it, that's something you should decide yourself. It's not like trying out meditation requires some kind of massive commitment so there's no reason not to.
OP here. the thing for me is that I already feel I live almost entirely in the present in a controlled and disciplined manner. When I hear people talking about how meditation will "bring us into the moment" etc I don't really understand because I feel like I've been living that way my entire life
I feel like my brain has double the blood flow and like I have solar panels on my scalp after I meditate. I play piano skillfully with this invoked feeling and can do ice baths without the Wim Hof breath or with just 3 WHM breaths.
Focus on one of the five aggregates.
Count your breaths. Observe how you lose count or lose cadence of breath. An eon is as long as it takes for all history to lose count.
"Many eons of world expanding,
Many eons of world contracting,
Many eons of world expanding and contracting"
isn't that just due to increased oxygen flow though rather than simply the "meditation" aspect? I've had a few times when I felt high from meditation but it was definitely just from the oxygen
All organs work on fixing themselves up when idle or set to low inactivity. Fasting for example improves the lining and form of the digestive tract. The same goes for the digestion of your mind and your brain folds. The psycho somatic power of meditation is what you should be training as you make your body more supple in statue postures held for daunting periods. I sweat when I meditate. I was joking about the monk mockery btw
Full lotus pose is quite the achievement.
Otherwise you are rocking back and forth ever so subtly or squeezing this and slacking that. Sitting mindfully one realizes all the aches and pains of the body that keep it from good posture or the "parami" of disciplined sessions.
For me its metta meditation and samjna meditation.
The monks pointed and laughed at my poor posture. Once I fell back because of my weak glutes. I tried doing the Indian neck jive and I have to go see a Chiropractor.
This thread is dumb OP. Start watching Dhamma videos.
Meditation has been an integral part of any major religion, yes buddy that includes Christiniaty. Go and actually practice the religion instead of larping for the sake of trolling reddit atheists.
it was partly bait. meditation is a very simple term to describe a lot of different kinds of internal practices. Within one discipline there may be many different styles of meditation. Even Christian prayer can be categorized as meditation. Islamic prayer absolutely can be, it's indistinguishable from hindu mantra. There's deep reflective meditation, outward explorative meditation, meditation focused on the absence of thought or expression, and meditation without a purpose where every little thought and expression is cherished and encouraged. Meditation is study of the self
meditationbros, we are suspicious of it because so many of you can't give us concrete examples of good stuff it does.
so you're kind of like... when some dude that tripped balls says he got incredibly beneficial spiritual knowledge from a trip but he can't really say anything about it besides >like, we're all one, man, woah
it's bullshit. i have had this same thing after waking up from a dream. i thought i got an incredible idea in a dream, woke up, wrote it down. looking at it the next day?
about half the time they are incoherent. most of the other half they aren't good ideas. a sliver of them are okay ideas.
but they all felt incredible at the time.
Wrong.
I can hold my breath for 5+ minutes, I have become more supple and less stress responding.
The four noble truths are beyond emo "suffering" but describing the fundamental stress of energy coiling into the infinite fabric of being.

and in this post you give me one line of concrete things it did for you then a bunch of woowoo stuff after.
so, still better than average post about it.
The woo woo is what births the underwhelming concrete examples like scientists testing the skin of comfy blizzard robed Tibetan monks seeing superhuman energy in heat and gamma waves. They are having a good time that's what the woowoo is all about. Millenia of religious artifact is recurrent and resonant although disparate.
Only if you are mindful about it with your miraCULOS consciousness.
Mindfulness is inextricable from the pure idealist model of Buddhist/Hindu ontology/metaphysics.
Thus if you feel braphogging to be ethical, you are accomplished in conduct free from blame of sexual misconduct (by your low standard sophistry but not by elite monk karma gains)

You really think you're so smart and profound don't you.
It's just instrospection and training in patience/focusing. It's no different than doing other healthy activities like washing your teeth or going to the gym and having a balanced diet.
One time I won a 5k race by doing 3 sets of WHM breaths before.
I was on the verge of death suffering digestive illness and still managed to smoke a whole town of athletes. I looked like a skinny marathoner but I had never trained before. I ran slow before. I tapped into something deep. Nerve gains are pure energy. Energy is woo woo.
You tapped into the fight or flight response.
WHM doesn't do any of the "alkaline" or superoxygenization stuff that Wim says it does, it's just a controlled way to dump fight or flight hormones into your system by tricking your body into thinking it's suffocating for a split second.

>Being able to trigger fight or flight response reliably
You're actually selling me on this meditation thing.
Once you can do 50+ pushups in one held breath more than you could do in normal breathing push ups you'll be a believer in the breath as a governor between conscious and unconscious physiopsychological processes
More so than this is the power of belief and anticipation. Ethics and trust are inextricable from knowledge and knowledge is inextricable from physical reflex in context of life around. If you can think yourself in and out of panic and immersion.
Now this brings me to the power of prayer. Not only can you control your organs manually with the mastered mind and spirit. You can influence the physiology of others and be influenced by others remotely. So by praying for someone or being prayed for by someone you can send sensible signaling of subtle sentiment. Group belief and morale are perhaps the most powerful unexplained force in sports.
Agh typos. If you can think yourself in and out of panic and immersion then you can control what doctors will never believe or see for themselves in the clinic.

"So it is with any brahman or contemplative who lives withdrawn from sensuality in body & mind, and whose desire, infatuation, urge, thirst, & fever for sensuality is relinquished & stilled within him: Whether or not he feels painful, racking, piercing feelings due to his striving, he is capable of knowledge, vision, & unexcelled self-awakening. This was the third simile — spontaneous, never before heard — that appeared to me.
"I thought: 'Suppose that I, clenching my teeth and pressing my tongue against the roof of my mouth, were to beat down, constrain, & crush my mind with my awareness.' So, clenching my teeth and pressing my tongue against the roof of my mouth, I beat down, constrained, & crushed my mind with my awareness. Just as a strong man, seizing a weaker man by the head or the throat or the shoulders, would beat him down, constrain, & crush him, in the same way I beat down, constrained, & crushed my mind with my awareness. As I did so, sweat poured from my armpits. And although tireless persistence was aroused in me, and unmuddled mindfulness established, my body was aroused & uncalm because of the painful exertion. But the painful feeling that arose in this way did not invade my mind or remain.
"I thought: 'Suppose I were to become absorbed in the trance of non-breathing.' So I stopped the in-breaths & out-breaths in my nose & mouth. As I did so, there was a loud roaring of winds coming out my earholes, just like the loud roar of winds coming out of a smith's bellows... So I stopped the in-breaths & out-breaths in my nose & mouth & ears. As I did so, extreme forces sliced through my head, just as if a strong man were slicing my head open with a sharp sword...
2/2
Extreme pains arose in my head, just as if a strong man were tightening a turban made of tough leather straps around my head... Extreme forces carved up my stomach cavity, just as if a butcher or his apprentice were to carve up the stomach cavity of an ox... There was an extreme burning in my body, just as if two strong men, grabbing a weaker man by the arms, were to roast & broil him over a pit of hot embers. And although tireless persistence was aroused in me, and unmuddled mindfulness established, my body was aroused & uncalm because of the painful exertion. But the painful feeling that arose in this way did not invade my mind or remain.
"Devas, on seeing me, said, 'Gotama the contemplative is dead.' Other devas said, 'He isn't dead, he's dying.' Others said, 'He's neither dead nor dying, he's an arahant, for this is the way arahants live.'
"I thought: 'Suppose I were to practice going altogether without food.' Then devas came to me and said, 'Dear sir, please don't practice going altogether without food. If you go altogether without food, we'll infuse divine nourishment in through your pores, and you will survive on that.' I thought, 'If I were to claim to be completely fasting while these devas are infusing divine nourishment in through my pores, I would be lying.' So I dismissed them, saying, 'Enough.'

In general, no. The world is such a fricked up and chaotic place that if you walk around as Mr. Serenity, you're just going to come off as having a mental illness. That's your best case scenario. Other than that, you're just going to end up sitting around like a jack ass manually breathing, thinking you're going to magically improve your life by literally sitting around and doing nothing. Go for a walk in the woods instead or take a drive down a country road with the windows down on a warm evening.
>is meditation worth the effort?
Absolutely. Meditation, prayer, whatever. At some point you're going to learn the hard way that separating your physical body from the larger universe your soul is a part of... will not work out very well.
if you have to ask then you're not ready
I literally meditated for an hour every day for two months and couldn't decide if it was worth it
